  • Patent number: 4310478
Abstract: Reinforcing fibers of plastic having a surface tension of from 40 dyn/cm to about the surface tension of water are disclosed. The fibers can be easily and uniformly disposed in matrices. For organic matrices, a surface tension of 40-50 dyn/cm is effective. For cement matrices, a surface tension about 70-75 dyn/cm is effective. The high surface tensions are obtained by a corona treatment and subsequent application of a hydrophilic avivage. Corona treatment may be performed on the fibers, or on films from which the fibers are made.

  • Patent number: 4308872
Abstract: A method and apparatus are shown for monitoring respiration volumes by continuously measuring, while the patient breathes, variations in the patient's chest cross sectional area, or preferably, variations in both chest and abdomen areas. Each area is measured by measuring the inductance of an extensible electrical conductor closely looped around the body, by connecting the loop as the inductance in a variable frequency LC oscillator followed by a frequency-to-voltage converter and a voltage display. Calibration is made by measuring the area variations for a few breaths while directly measuring corresponding volumes of breath, preferably while the patient assumes at least two body positions, for example sitting and supine. The method and apparatus may also be used to monitor changes in area of any non-magnetic object.

  • Patent number: 4302676
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the separation of one isotope from a mixture of isotopes, which comprises selectively exciting the desired isotope to an energy level at a distance dE below the ionization continuum by means of laser irradiation, said level dE being at such a distance beneath the ionization continuum that the excited atoms at this level can be ionized by irradiation with an infrared laser, irradiating the excited atoms with an infrared laser so as to ionize them selectively, and separating the ionized atoms by deposition on a desired substrate. According to a modification of the process the desired isotope is excited in two or more steps of laser irradiation to an energy level above the ionization level, the excited atoms are permitted to decay by autoionization so as to form ions of the desired isotope, and these are collected.

  • Patent number: 4299434
Abstract: A watertight RF coaxial jack connector is provided which includes an elastomeric layer disposed in sealing relationship with its upper opening. The layer is formed so as to guide the center pin of a mating coaxial plug connector to puncture the layer and engage a split pin provided within the jack connector body. A watertight seal is thereby effected for preventing moisture from entering inside the jack connector through the upper opening. A second elastomeric layer is mounted within the jack body beneath the first layer. The second layer both supports the split pin and exerts an upward compressive force on the first elastomeric layer.
