  • Patent number: 4370609
Abstract: A device for locating faults on the lines of electrical power distribution systems, including generally a variable impedance means adapted for connection in series with an electrical power line, and means for switching such variable impedance means between a first low impedance value when an initial current I.sub.1 of predetermined level flows on the power line for a predetermined period of time to enable detection of a fault condition, and a second high impedance value which limits the flow of current to a low level I.sub.2. A meter or other indicating device provides a reading of the current I.sub.1 to determine if a fault condition exists. In this fashion, the fault locator device limits both the magnitude and the time duration of the current when testing for a fault, so as not to adversely effect any system components.

  • Patent number: 4368418
Abstract: Apparatus for controlling high voltage by absorption of capacitive vars, comprising a stator (10) having a core and a three phase winding (14) connected to the high voltage, and a rotor (12) having magnetic material (20) exhibiting a sharp magnetic saturation. The rotor (12) includes longitudinally extending damper bars (22) imbedded in grooves or slots (24) in a manner similar to the bars used in a squirrel cage rotor. The magnetic structure of the rotor can be of two types--a symmetrical structure for asynchronous operation, and a salient pole structure for synchronous operation. In the case of the symmetrical rotor construction, the stator (10) and rotor (12) constitute a rotating induction reactor (8) which operates in the same manner as a free running, unloaded induction motor. The induction reactor (8) exhibits characteristics similar to a saturable reactor with respect to var versus voltage absorption, but does not have the undesirable harmonics normally present in the saturable reactor.

  • Patent number: 4367762
Abstract: An umbrella cover (10, 100) is provided in which a sleeve (10, 100) contains a substantially rigid telescoping support rod (20) which enables the cover (10, 100) to be readily mounted on an umbrella canopy (12) while facilitating compact storage of the cover (10, 100). The lower end of the sleeve (10) may include a flap portion (16) which is folded back to form a cuff (24) prior to lifting the cover (10) over the umbrella (12) or the sleeve (100) may include a partial triangular cut out (104) in the front side (106) which has as its backing, a portion (114) of the interior of the rear side (112) of the cover (100) in place of the cuff arrangement (24). In either instance, the rigid rod (20) is retained in a pocket (22, 124) formed in the sleeve (10, 100). The pocket (124) extends along one edge of the backing member ( 114) to add ridigness while the cut out (104) facilitates mounting of the sleeve (100) over the umbrella canopy (12).

  • Patent number: 4363633
Abstract: A reference liquid for calibration or quality control of instruments which determine ionized calcium and pH. The reference liquid contains both a particular calcium ion activity and a pH-buffer and can therefore be used for calibration of both the calcium-sensitive electrode and the pH-electrode in the instruments. The pH-buffer is a nitrogen-containing organic sulphonic acid and the salt of this acid, the acid having a pK in the range of 6.6-7.6. The reference liquid has an ionic strength of 0.15-0.17, a buffer capacity .beta. in the range of 0.04-0.10 and is packed in glass ampoules.

  • Patent number: 4359158
Abstract: A blister pack structure for the storage and display of articles, especially elongated articles, said blister pack comprising a relatively stiff backing sheet serving as a substrate upon which the elongated article is supported and a transparent cover sheet having marginal portions thereof affixed to said substrate and defining an enclosure for receiving at least a portion of said article. The configuration of the enclosure substantially conforms to the outline of said article. The length of the article is greater than the length of the enclosure whereby one end of the article extends into the enclosure while the opposite end of the article extends beyond one end of the enclosure to facilitate and in fact encourage handling of the exposed portion of the article. Fastening means affixed to the enclosure retains the article within the package and prevents inadvertent removal of the article from the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 4359008
Abstract: A sewing machine (10) for mass producing zipper closable garment pocket entries (65) includes a pair of pocket entry (65) in a plurality of garments (50,72,80). The apparatus 10 is a modification of a conventional type of double needle sewing machine and includes knife blades (18) spaced laterally apart from each other which cooperate with a pair of conventional double needles (12) to cut in advance of each stitch (58) and enable provision of a square miter at the ends of each finished pocket entry (65). The knife blades (18) are disposable between and behind the two needles (12) in the material feed direction. A feeder mechanism feeds continuous zipper tape (38) across the throat plate (16) beneath the needles (12) and knife blades (18) which may be selectively lowered and raised by the operator. The knife blades (18) operate in conjunction with the needle bar (14) movement only when engaged so as to cut in advance of each stitch while being unaffected by needle bar movement when disengaged.
