Abstract: Boar taint in individual carcasses of uncastrated boars or parts thereof is determined in a fast and simple manner by determining IR-spectrophotometrical transmission data for the individual carcass or part or preferably on a sample from the carcass or part, and comparing the spectral data registered with corresponding data having a statistical relationship to boar taint. A suitable determination is determination of the ratio between the absorptions at two different wave lengths in the range of 1275-1325 cm.sup.-1 in the IR spectrum of the fat sample. A still higher correlation between the particular spectral data and the organoleptic data is obtained when one or more further parameters with statistical correlation to the odor image is/are included, e.g., the concentration of unsaturated fatty acids in the fat of the boar carcass.

Abstract: A magnetic lock wherein the movable portion is sandwiched between two stationary portions. The movable portion carries a plurality of transversely slidably movable magnets which serve as pin tumblers that fit into recesses or cavities in either stationary part to lock the movable member against movement. Fixed to one of the stationary parts are means for biasing the pin tumbler magnets toward the other stationary part whereby to hold the lock in unlocked condition. The key is placed adjacent the other stationary part and carries magnets poled to repel the pin tumbler magnets with an equal and opposite force to the biasing means to locate the pin tumblers wholly within the movable part so that the movable part may be moved. Preferably, at least two of the biasing means have different strengths for biasing the pin tumbler magnets.
Abstract: An electro-chromic display in which the outer frame of the display cell confining an electrolyte is defined by a pair of oppositely disposed substrates, the peripheral edges of the substrates being joined sealingly to each other with an addition reaction type silicone resin adhesive containing fine powder of an inorganic substance such as aluminum, alumina, titanium oxide, silicon oxide or boron nitride which prevents decrease of said electrolyte.
Abstract: A zinc alkaline secondary battery with improved service life in which a multi-layer separator is interposed between the negative and positive electrodes and the quantity of the alkaline electrolyte in the layer of the separator adjacent to the negative electrode is less than that of the electrolyte in the layer of the separator adjacent to the positive electrode.
Abstract: This invention concerns a drilling installation comprising a base which rests on the ground, a rig, a winch, items of equipment such as a drill-pipe storage coffer, and a working floor which is raised above the base, surrounding the rig.The installation is characterized by the fact that it comprises a carrying platform designed to take the rig, and which can be moved from a low position in contact with the base to a high position, and which is connected by a suitable lifting device to lifting uprights attached to the base. The platform also carries the working floor and items of equipment. The invention more specifically concerns drilling installations for oil-drilling operations.
Abstract: A method and system for the passive solar energy induced storage and use of thermal energy at both high and low temperatures, comprising a collector (76,110) communicating with the atmosphere for collecting air acting as a carrier for thermal energy, an underground thermal storage reservoir (78,112) having a capacity sufficient to store thermal energy for substantially an entire heating or cooling season, and a solar chimney (82) providing convection means for at least in part inducing the natural circulation of air from the atmosphere into the collector into and through the thermal storage reservoir, and outwardly from the reservoir back into the atmosphere, to transfer thermal energy between the collector (76,110) and the reservoir (78,112).
Abstract: Improved method for calibrating non-invasive system for measuring respiration volume of the type including apparatus for providing signals indicative of rib cage and abdominal contributions to respiration volume, device for multiplying the rib cage and abdominal signals by predetermined weighting factors reflecting the relative contributions of the rib cage and abdomen to respiration volume, and device for summing the weighted signals for providing a signal proportional to respiration volume.

Abstract: The invention relates to a blood purification system especially useful as an artificial kidney system. When the blood of the patient is purified by a filter, the volume of filtrate from the filter is measured accurately and the volume of a substitution fluid supplied to the patient is measured accurately. The blood is purified while the two volumes are being maintained in balance accurately.
