Abstract: A mine cage position describer used for monitoring movement of a member along an elongate path which includes a magnetizable component extensible along the elongate path. The component is magnetized inducing an electrical field to be generated which defines a wave-like pattern of constant pitch. The equipment includes a magnetic detector component comprising two magnetic sensors arrangeable adjacent to the magnetizable component and spared from one another. The two magnetic sensors derive a first electrical signal and a second electrical signal in response to the magnetic field. The electrical signals vary with the wave-like pattern of the magnetic field and are out of phase by an amount dependent on the spacing of the sensors. Error detection means detect circuit faults which could produce misleading positional data.
Abstract: Locations of buried deposits containing uranium are determined by detecting the presence of Pb214, Bi214, Po214, Pb210, Bi210 and Po210 in solutions obtained by chemically leaching these elements from rocks and soil. Alpha sensitive nuclear emulsions are exposed to the alpha decay of Po214 and Po210. The emulsions are developed to display alpha tracks. Alpha track population as a function of sample size, volume of solution used, emulsion area and exposure measures concentration of Po214 and Po210 in the sample. Anomalus concentrations suggest presence of buried deposits containing uranium. Similar anomalus concentrations of alpha tracks from Bi212 and Po212 formed in emulsions exposed to leach solutions containing Pb212, Bi212 and Po212 suggest deposits containing thorium. Plotting normalized alpha track population (numbers of alpha tracks per gram, per square mm., per hour) and sample locations suggest mineral deposit locations.
Abstract: The invention is an improvement in the process for hydrogenation of a finely divided coal and oil slurry wherein the improvement comprises subjecting the hydrogenation products to a first phase separation to obtain a liquid fraction and a gaseous fraction. The gaseous fraction is subjected to a second phase separation to obtain a liquid fraction having a boiling range between about 200.degree. C. and about 500.degree. C., which fraction is used to preheat the coal and oil slurry by direct mixing therewith.
Abstract: An aluminium-silicon alloy casting in which zones formed so as to have a particularly fine-grained structure are cooled by way of individual thin-walled mould wall portions, which are prevented from dissolving completely by the melt and are intermetallically bonded to the casting and are detachable from the finished casting only in a destructive manner.
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus and method for cleaning outsides of heat exchange tubes mounted transversely to the vertical flow of seawater in Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion plants. The invention comprises a number of small floating objects circulating in the seawater flow which randomly clean outside surfaces of heat exchange tubes. The floating objects are made of buoyant plastic foam encased in polyethylene or other material selected to maximize cleaning but minimize wear on the outside surfaces of the tubes. The preferred shape of the floating objects is generally fusiform, altered to have erratic motion in seawater flow. Appendages may trail from the floating objects to increase the randomness of the cleaning action. The flow of seawater is arranged to provide a constantly circulating path for the floating objects to rise through slow downward flow and to fall with greater downward flow velocity. Screens located above and below the heat exchanger prevent the floating objects from escaping.

Abstract: A pediatric suction receptacle has a closed plastic collector with an upper wall integrally joined to a downward extending wall and an inward sloping wall terminating in a spigot. Two plastic tubes permanently connected to the upper wall have proximal ends extending into the chamber. Distal ends of the tubes have integrally formed two-way tubing adaptors. One tube is connected to a wall suction fitting, and the other tube is connected to a patient for receiving fluids to be calibrated.
Abstract: In a heat exchanger, ends of adjacent heat-conducting pipes are flattened to form joining faces and these faces are butt-welded together to form a parallel pipe heat exchanger without end plates.
Abstract: A shower cabinet having a flexible curtain support band secured at each end, respectively, to one of a pair of doors so that when the doors are closed part of the band lies between the doors and the remainder is curved and when the doors open the band is straightened and extends across the front upper part of the cabinet.
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a spherical bearing rod end having an outer race member, an intermediate member of yieldable material within and supported by said outer race member and an inner race operationally supported by said intermediate member comprising preforming a rod end blank having a cylindrically shaped head section at one end thereof, flattening the cylindrical section to cold form two enlarged faces, forming a bore through said faces thereby leaving a uniformly cold formed annular area to serve as the outer member, inserting in said bore said intermediate member and said inner race member, interlocking with mechanical interlocking means said intermediate member and inner race member within said bore to effect the bearing support of said inner race member within said intermediate member.
Abstract: U-shaped drain traps are provided wherein strainer means are disposed within the trap for entrapping various size particles and valuable articles which have accidentally entered the drain. The trap is provided with access means for permitting the strainer means to be placed within or withdrawn from a vertical or horizontal section of the trap. The strainer means are novel construction for the purpose of entrapping particles and for ease of handling.
Abstract: A nestable load pallet or roller pallet comprising at least two opposed pallet side frames wherein said opposed pallet sides are pivotably connected to a horizontal connection along one of their vertical side edges, and a horizontal pallet deck is pivotably mounted to said horizontal connection between said pallet side frames. The pallet deck and pallet side frames are automatically and positively forced outwardly and inwardly by manual upward and downward movement of the pallet deck by means of a spiral guide and guide follower. The pallet deck can be locked in the vertical position while the side frames are in a diverged position whereby the load pallet can be nested with other load pallets.
Abstract: The micro-filming apparatus comprises an object table, a camera head arranged above said table, a frame pivotally mounted on said table, a glass plate and mounting therefor mounted on said frame, said glass plate being capable of movement perpendicularly of the plane of the frame to adjust the distance between the object and the film, setting sliders mounted on said frame movable between first and second positions, a handle attached to said sliders by which movement between said two positions is effected, and coacting means arranged between said sliders and the plate to effect perpendicular movement of said glass plate on movement of said sliders, wherein on movement of said sliders into the first position the lower surface of the glass plate is brought into the picture-taking plane and on movement into the second position the upper surface of the plate is brought into the picture-taking plane.

Abstract: A fluid operable valve suitable for use in high temperature and pressure environments involving the flow of solids material, incorporates a main valve member and a pilot valve member co-operable with separate seats axially spaced apart in association with the inlet of the valve. The arrangement is such that in operation the pilot valve member is sequenced to close against its seat prior to the main valve member which is purged prior to closure by a gas to remove particles of material which might cause ineffective sealing.

Abstract: This invention relates to a protective device adapted to protect the hand, palm and wrist of a person while one is engaging in a sporting activity, such as skateboarding or football, and can also be used to retain the hand, palm, and wrist substantially immobile after an injury. The device has a contoured, generally rectangular shape constructed of a resilient, energy-absorbent material, such as plastic foam, which is coated or covered on at least one side with a covering layer. A bendable stiffening member is interposed between the covering layer and resilient material forming a sandwich-like construction. The peripheral edges of the resilient material and the covering layer extend beyond the peripheral edges of the stiffening member. The novel construction provides a generally cylindrical protective means when the device is worn. Suitable fastening means are provided to retain the device on the wearer's hand, palm and wrist.
