Abstract: Oligomeric condensation products of certain diketones and phenols can be end-capped with a vinylbenzyl moiety and certain other moieties, especially alkyl groups, to afford thermosetting resins particularly valuable in making laminated circuit boards. Resins prepared by the reaction of 1 molar proportion of diacetylbenzene with from 3.5 to 4.0 molar proportions of phenol and end-capped with from 50 to 100% vinylbenzyl groups with the remainder being alkyls of 1 through 11 carbon atoms are particularly useful.

Abstract: Chlorofluorocarbons are purified by removing hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids with a carbon molecular sieve having an average pore size of about 3.5 Angstroms with no more than about 5% of the pores having a size less than 3.2 Angstroms and no more than about 5% of the pores having a size greater than 4.2 Angstroms.
Abstract: Thermosetting resins which are essentially vinylbenzyl end-capped ethers of the oligomeric condensation products of certain dihydric phenols and formaldehyde are readily polymerized to give an extensively cross-linked polymer particularly useful in printed circuit boards and similar laminates. Effective cost reduction may be enjoyed by replacing up to 50% of the vinylbenzyl moieties by other groups, such as alkyl and benzyl groups, without destroying the usefulness of the resulting thermosetting resins. The vinylbenzyl ether product from bisphenol-A is especially recommended.

Abstract: A method is described for purifying elecrolytes used in alkali battery systems and containing transition metal solutes as impurities. An electrolyte is mixed with or fed through a column containing poly(acrylamideoxime) resin. The resin chelates the transition metal solute impurities found in typical organic solvents.Electrolytes so treated exhibit improved electrochemical properties because the electrolyte is now devoid of impurities deleterious to battery performance. The solution to be purified can consist of either the organic solvent or the solvent containing at least one alkali salt solute. The purification comprises the steps of (a) adding the solvent or electrolyte solution to a chelating resin; (2) agitating the solution sufficiently to allow chelation of the metal impurities on the resin (when performed in a batch process) or eluting the solution through a pre-formed bed (when performed continuously in a column process).

Abstract: An improved synthesis of carbon fluoride CF.sub.x, and carbon fluoride chloride, (C.sub.y F.sub.x Cl.sub.z).sub.n, is described. Direct fluorination of the intermediate (C.sub.y F.sub.x Cl.sub.z).sub.n (x.ltoreq.0.7, y.ltoreq.1 and z.ltoreq.0.1) in the absence of chlorine produces, either CF.sub.x (x.gtoreq.1) or (C.sub.y F.sub.x Cl.sub.z).sub.n (x.gtoreq.0.9, y=1, z.ltoreq.0.01) in as brief a period as 1 hour. The final CF.sub.x product is novel and exhibits improved properties compared to CF.sub.x made via conventional methods. The novel process for producing carbon fluoride chloride is more economical than prior art methods.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a fluorinated benzene sulfonyl fluoride comprising the step of: heating a benzene sulfonyl fluoride of the Formula (I) ##STR1## where Y is fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, a methyl group, an ethyl group, or a propyl group; p is 0 to 3; and q is 2 to 6, in the presence of an alkali metal fluoride under conditions and for a time sufficient to provide a fluorinated benzene sulfonyl fluoride of the Formula (II) ##STR2## where x is 1 to 5; m=q-x; and Y and p are as defined above. The present invention also provides novel benzene sulfonyl fluorides of the Formula (III) ##STR3## where each Y is meta or para to --SO.sub.2 F and is independently selected from the group consisting of chlorine, fluorine, fluorosulfonyl, methyl group, ethyl group, and propyl group; and p is 1 or 2.The fluorinated benzene sulfonyl fluorides are versatile fluorinated intermediates.
Abstract: A thermosetting resin is comprised of (a) a bisimide, particularly a bismaleimide, (b) a polyphenol, particularly a bisphenol, and (c) dicyandiamide. The polyphenol may be styrene-terminated (i.e. a vinyl benzyl ether of a bisphenol).

Abstract: Styrene-terminated polyethers of polyphenols may be used as components in a laminate when coated on a reinforcement or substrate. The poly(vinyl benzyl ether) may be prepared by reacting a bisphenol with an alpha,omega-diahlosubstituted alkane and thereafter reacting the resultant product with vinyl benzyl chloride. The laminates which are prepared from these compounds may be employed in electric or electronic circuit boards and will possess desirable electrical and thermal properties as exemplified by a moderate-to-high glass transition temperature and a low dielectric constant.

Abstract: Novel compositions of matter comprising semi-interpenetrating polymer networks resulting from the reaction between a poly(vinyl benzyl ether) of a polyphenol and engineering condensation thermoplastic may be used as components in a laminate when coated on a reinforcement or substrate. Abstract: The present invention provides a simple process for the production of anhydrous oxime by the separation of the oxime from an aqueous solution. The process is advantageous because the potential explosive hazards of current processes are eliminated and the oxime is easily separated from the aqueous phase. The process comprises the steps of:(a) vaporizing an aqueous oxime solution;(b) vaporizing a water-immiscible organic solvent for the oxime wherein the boiling point of the solvent is lower than the boiling point of the oxime;(c) combining the vapors together;(d) condensing the collected vapors;(e) removing the organic phase of the condensate from the aqueous phase; and(f) recovering anhydrous oxime from the removed organic phase. The anhydrous oxime produced by the present process if useful in applications such as isocyanate condensation and carbamate formation.
