  • Patent number: 8071957
Abstract: A soft chemical ionization source can be small, require low power, reliably produce different ions depending on the operating conditions and configuration, and produce ions that ionize many sample chemicals in different phases in air, or solutions, or on surfaces. In one embodiment, an ionization source is comprised of a housing having a center post extending therefrom, a plurality of needles extending from the housing, and a counterelectrode extending around the housing. The plurality of needles and the counterelectrode are each coupled to an electrical supply. The center post and the plurality of needles extend through the counterelectrode. A voltage applied to the plurality of needles and the counterelectrode forms a gas discharge. By changing the dimensional or electrical characteristics of the ionization source elements, singularly, or relative to other sources in an array, the types, ratios among, and quantities of reagent ions can be changed and controlled.

  • Patent number: 8067532
Abstract: The disclosed invention relates to methods of modifying peptide compositions to increase stability and delivery efficiency. Specifically, the disclosed invention relates to methods to increase the stability and delivery efficiency of protein kinase C (PKC) modulatory peptide compositions. A “therapeutic peptide composition” comprises a “carrier peptide” and a “cargo peptide.” A “carrier peptide” is a peptide or amino acid sequence within a peptide that facilitates the cellular uptake of the therapeutic peptide composition. The “cargo peptide” is a PKC modulatory peptide. Peptide modifications to either the carrier peptide, the cargo peptide, or both, which are described herein increase the stability and delivery efficiency of therapeutic peptide compositions by reducing disulfide bond exchange, physical stability, reducing proteolytic degradation, and increasing efficiency of cellular uptake.

  • Patent number: 8066412
Abstract: A luminaire system provides for mounting and accessing a light fixture housing without tools. A universal bracket is coupled to the junction box along the ceiling and engages with a top mounting plate affixed to the housing. One or more slide hooks appended to the universal bracket allows the top mounting plate to mount to the universal bracket, and a reinforced spring and locking spring keeps the light fixture housing in place, while preventing rattling between the universal bracket and the top-mounting plate. The housing can be removed from the electrical junction box through the use of a release button affixed to the housing. The button disengages the locking spring from the top mounting plate, thereby allowing the housing to swivel away from the universal bracket and junction box by way of a hanging hook. The hanging hook supports the housing when released from the universal bracket.

  • Patent number: 8061405
Abstract: An apparatus and method for manufacturing a down hole tool that reduces manufacturing costs and enhances the tool's performance. A belted mold assembly includes a casting assembly, a belt assembly, and a mid-belt. The belted mold assembly is used to fabricate a casting that allows for a larger diameter blank to be used which displaces the more expensive casting material and for using a smaller outer diameter thin-walled mold. The casting assembly is disposed within the belt assembly and the mid-belt is loaded in the volume created between the casting assembly's outer surface and the belt assembly's inner surface. The mid-belt provides a bracing for the casting assembly during the casting process. Optionally, a cap can be disposed on top of the blank for preventing metallurgical bonds from forming between the binder material and the upper portion of the blank. This allows for the excess binder material to remain high in purity so that it can be reprocessed.

  • Patent number: 8056226
Abstract: A dual interface separable insulated connector comprising a faraday cage molded over a bus bar for use in an electric power system and a method of manufacturing the same are provided. The faraday cage can be disposed within a semi-conductive shell. The configuration of the separable insulated connector can provide for easier bonding between the faraday cage and insulating material. Additionally, the configuration can eliminate or reduce the need to coat the bus bar with an adhesive agent and to smooth the metal bus bar to remove burrs, other irregularities, and sharp corners from the bar. Manufacturing the dual interface separable insulated connector can include molding a semi-conductive rubber faraday cage over a conductive bus bar, inserting the faraday cage into a shell, and injecting insulating material between the faraday cage and shell.
