  • Patent number: 4493181
Abstract: An attachment for the snout of a combine includes a plate which is disposed above the snout and is inclined upwardly and rearwardly at an angle greater than the angle of the upper surface of the snout to provide a steeper surface for engaging and lifting a down crop. The plate extends above the conventional ear saver which thereby may remain in place to prevent corn ears from being ejected from the combine. The forward end of the plate is fastened to the snout and the rear end is supported on the ear saver by a sliding connection which permits the forward part of the snout to tilt up as it encounters mounds of earth and the like.

  • Patent number: 4493399
Abstract: Described is a control system for an elevator wherein the distance between the current car position and the target position of a floor at which the car is to be halted is detected on the basis of a car position signal computed from car displacements and a preliminarily stored floor position signal for controlling the car speed. According to the present invention, the contents of a read-only floor memory concerning the respective floor positions stated in the building plan or schedule are transferred at the outset into a transient read/write floor memory. In the course of the subsequent elevator car travel, the data in said transient floor memory is corrected through the learning of the contents of the car position signal computed during car displacements. In this manner, the car may be controlled to arrive at a target floor accurately despite occasional difference between the actual floor position and the design floor positions.

  • Patent number: 4494141
Abstract: A CT scanner in which the amount of X-ray information acquired per unit time is substantially increased by using a continuous on X-ray source, and a sampled data system with the detector. Because the detector is of the high resolution variety with more than 500 cells, use of a reasonable sampling rate produces data at a rate faster than can be stored to disk by the system computer. The array processor, which forms a part of the standard CT architecture, is interfaced to the data acquisition system and configured to provide real time filtering of the acquired detector data, the filter serving a compressing function to reduce the data rate to one acceptable by the host computer.

  • Patent number: 4492305
Abstract: A culture collecting swab and a sealed glass ampoule packaged end to end in an envelope and initially are held in an assembled condition by a resiliently yieldable closure member which is carried on the end of the stem of the swab and which includes a cup portion snugly telescoped on one end portion of the ampoule. After a culture has been collected on the tip of the swab, the ampoule is broken open along a score line inside the cup portion of the closure member, the end portion broken off the ampoule being retained in the cup portion. The tip and end of the swab are then inserted into the ampoule through the open end thereof to immerse the tip in a culture-sustaining media and, as an incident to this, a plug portion on the closure member enters and closes the open end of the ampoule.

  • Patent number: 4492221
Abstract: The device includes a platform mounted on a base and adapted to support a person's hands or feet in side-by-side relation. A slotted plate defines left and right sets of air-directing channels between the platform and the base. A rotatable impeller circulates air through a manifold and into the channels with the air being discharged upwardly from the channels and through ports in the platform to relax and refresh the hands or feet. A weight attached to one of the blades of the impeller causes the platform to vibrate and further induce relaxation.

  • Patent number: 4492061
Abstract: A grinding system is controlled by (1) determining the exact nature of a power function relationship between (a) the rate at which material is removed from one of the surfaces at a rubbing interface and (b) the feed rate at which the rubbing surfaces are fed into each other, for a particular grinding operation, i.e., a particular grinding wheel and other specified conditions affecting the rate of material removal at the rubbing interface; and (2) controlling, measuring or setting the material removal rate or the feed rate in such a grinding operation in accordance with said power function relationship.

  • Patent number: 4491732
Abstract: In a modular solid state detector of the type including a scintillator and diodes for converting x-ray flux to a measurable electrical signal, the diodes are mounted out of the path of incident x-radiation to minimize noise and to limit degradation. The resulting configuration reduces efficiency because the active diode area is limited and the length of the light path between the scintillator and diode is increased. In order to compensate for that reduction in efficiency, optical potting material is used to join the scintillator to the diodes in order to minimize light attenuation between those elements. In addition, the outer surface of the cured optical potting material is coated with a thin specular layer of silver to keep the light within the optical potting material and thus most efficiently reflected from the scintillator to the diode.

  • Patent number: 4489811
Abstract: An apparatus for decelerating an elevator at a terminating floor having a plurality of terminating detectors successively provided in the vicinity of the terminating floor for generating a terminating deceleration command value gradually decreasing upon operation of the detectors when the cage of the elevator approaches the terminating floor which comprises; a pulse generator for generating pulses corresponding to the moved distance of the cage; memories for storing the distances from the terminating floor to said respective terminating detectors; a counter for setting the distance information of the detectors of said memories upon operation of the detectors and counting the output pulses of said pulse generator, thereby subtracting the pulses from the set value; and a distance-to-speed converter for calculating the terminating deceleration command value corresponding to the output of said counter.

  • Patent number: 4490050
Abstract: A master/slave clock system including a slave clock configured for inexpensive and reliable control from the master. Each slave clock has an unregulated d-c supply adapted to be supplied with a-c power from the master clock. Threshold switching means in each slave clock is coupled across the d-c supply to sense an abnormally low d-c voltage level intentionally created by lowering the a-c supply level from the master. The threshold switching means switches the clock from the normal operating mode to the set mode where time is incremented at a predetermined rate for a duration controlled by the master clock in order to controllably set all slave clocks in the system to the correct time of day. The system conveniently allows all slaves to be reset to the same time when time is reset at the master, provides for automatic recovery after power failures, and provides a convenient means for automatically resynchronizing all slave clocks twice a day.

  • Patent number: 4490726
Abstract: A parabolic, collapsible rooftop microwave antenna for direct satellite-to-consumer TV transmission pivots in the direction of the aperture axis about a horizontal pivot axis in response to excessive wind forces. The antenna has a cross-head theodolite-type mount adjustable for azimuth and elevation, with a horizontal pivot that provides axial displacement if the axial wind force exceeds a predetermined threshold force. This limits the torque transmitted to the roof on which the antenna is mounted to a reasonably low level. Various torque sensitive horizontal pivots are described including a torqued pivot bolt, torqued slide bolts disposed in arcuate slots for limit-stop action, shear pins for quick release action, and biased springs for collapse and self-restoration to the initial vertical position in response to transient wind force exceeding a threshold force set by the spring bias.
