  • Patent number: 5372431
Abstract: A hydrodynamic thrust, journal or combined radial and thrust bearing and methods of manufacturing the same. The bearing includes a bearing pad structure that may change shape and move in any direction (six degrees of freedom) to optimize formation of a converging wedge for hydrodynamic operation, equalization of load on the bearing pads in thrust bearings and to adjust for any shaft misalignment. The bearing pad may be formed so as to contact the shaft in the installed state and to deflect under fluid film pressure. The shape of the pads may be altered to achieve desired deformations under load. The pads are supported by a support structure which can include one or more beam-like members. The support structure preferably includes a primary support portion, a secondary support portion and a tertiary support portion. The beams allow deflection of the pad by either deflecting or twisting in a torsional mode. The bearing pad support structure may include portions which are fluid dampened.

  • Patent number: 5373154
Abstract: An optical scanning system uses a multiple synchronizing sensing device to device a row of modulated signals into multiple blocks so that the effect of velocity jitter of a polygon scanning mirror is evenly distributed on each zone. In this manner, the influence of printing quality by the velocity jitter is reduced. For instance, the multiple synchronizing sensing device is provided with twenty sensing elements, the influence of the velocity jitter is lessened to be one twenth time as much as its original value. Therefore, the cost is greatly lowered by applying the system of the present invention to a high resolution optical scanning device which utilizes a polygon scanning mirror of less precision.

  • Patent number: 5367844
Abstract: A partition of the type commonly used in bathroom facilities. The partition is constructed of one or more panels having a construction which permits the use of a high percentage of recycled materials. The panels include a plurality of slats each having a elongated narrow construction which allows the slats to be formed by the process of pultrusion. This permits use of a high percentage of recycled materials. The slats and other components are designed such that the slats are maintained in alignment and held securely in place in the assembled state.

  • Patent number: 5355849
Abstract: An automatic variator for use in an internal combustion engine and other engines which use valve-type distribution systems, to operate a twin set of double-effect distribution sequential valve shafts for the purpose of regulating the valve overlap or timing and the valve opening section or to operate a double overhead camshaft with poppet valves for the purpose of regulating valve overlap or timing while the engine is running. A motor reducer advances a spindle against the valve shaft with a grooved screw at one end of the same, causing the shaft to turn and move, thereby varying the valve overlap or the valve section and valve overlap.

  • Patent number: 5351709
Abstract: A control valve for use in a swimming pool containing an automatic pool cleaner is described. The valve comprises a main water passage having an inlet port in a cranked inlet portion and an outlet port. A valve chamber extends from the main passage. It has a relief valve and an outlet through its side wall. A by-pass passage connects the outlet to the main water passage. A valve member sensitive to the pressure in the by-pass passage is located within the chamber and is biassed by a spring into a closed position to close off the relief port. When the pressure in the by pass passage falls, the valve member is drawn into the open position in which it controls the opening of both the relief valve and the outlet in dependence upon its position.

  • Patent number: 5351559
Abstract: A T-shape vortex shedder comprises a bluff body having a width W between upper and lower ends thereof and an extended plate having a length L in the fluid flow direction which is perpendicular to the bluff body. The bluff body and the extended plate form a T-shape vortex shedder with a T-shape cross section. When this T-shape vortex shedder is placed in a fluid motion within a circular pipe, the bluff body is located upstream of the fluid flow, and the extended plate is located downstream of the fluid flow, such that vortex shedding is produced at the upper and lower ends of the bluff body. The T-shape vortex shedder is characterized in that the L/W ratio is approximately 1.56.about.2.0, and the fluid flow produces steady vortex shedding when the Reynolds number of the fluid flow is approximately 2.4.times.10.sup.3 .about.3.2.times.10.sup.4.

  • Patent number: 5337727
Abstract: In a window for ovens, in particular household baking ovens, with a window structure that consists of several panes (10, 28, 32), at least one of the panes (28) is angled in comparison to the other panes (10, 32). Because of this a lower outer surface temperature results on the outer pane (32) of the multiple pane arrangement turned away from the oven inner chamber (12) with elevated temperature. The frame (16, 34) of the multiple pane arrangement can also have openings (36) on the top and bottom in the area between the outside pane (32) and the center pane (28). In combination with this measure, which permits convection of the outside air through the outer pane intermediate space (arrows 38), an additional reduction of the temperature of the outer pane (32) can be achieved. This air convection can be increased by the fact that the angled center pane (28) converges toward the outer pane (32) at the top.
