  • Patent number: 4966667
Abstract: An apparatus and process are provided for transferring a gel shaped as a cylinder containing a treated sample from a first step to a second electrophoresis step without distorting the position of the treated sample within the shaped gel. A shaped gel useful in electrophoresis is formed in a tube with a multifilament thread extending the entire length of and within the central portion of the shaped gel. The shaped gel then is employed in a first treatment step to form a treated sample that may be a separated sample. After extrusion of the gel from the tube, the portion of the thread extending from each end of the shaped gel is grasped and the shaped gel containing the treated sample is transferred to contact a slab gel along the entire length of the shaped gel to effect an electrophoresis step in the second treatment step.

  • Patent number: 4956071
Abstract: An electrodeionization apparatus and process are provided for removing ions from liquids. Liquid to be purified is passed through depleting compartments containing mixed anion and cation exchange resin beads while a second liquid is passed through concentrating compartments also containing ion exchange resin beads. Ions, under influence of a D.C. potential, pass from the depleting compartments into the concentrating compartments through ion permeable membranes. The beads in the depleting compartments are housed within subcompartments of controlled width and thickness and are retained therein by the ion permeable membranes which are secured to the walls of the subcompartments. Means are provided for reversing the polarity of the D.C. potential to convert the depleting compartments to concentrating compartments and the concentrating compartments to depleting compartments. Means are provided for continuously recovering purified water from the apparatus regardless of the polarity of the D.C.

  • Patent number: 4950553
Abstract: Bath surfaces of a polyimide sheet are coated with a layer of electroless nickel or cobalt which can also include a thin electroless copper layer on the Ni. or Co. This tenaciously bonded coating is subsequently treated in such a way so as to increase its permeability or porosity without substantially altering its resistive properties. The induced porosity allows water and other volatiles trapped in the dielectric polyimide sheet to be removed while the preserved electrical continuity of the metal layer is sufficient to support electrolytic copper plating which services the dual purpose of providing a copper thickness useful for the subsequent production of electronic circuitry and preventing the readsorption of water into the dielectric core by permanently sealing or coating said porous metal layer.

  • Patent number: 4949044
Abstract: Apparatus for mapping a static magnetic field is provided. A liquid sample is positioned in a magnetic field probe adapted to generate an alternating magnetic field and for measuring an induced signal from the sample as a result of being exposed to the alternating magnetic field. The induced signal from the sample is measured at discrete points along a helical path located within the static magnetic field. Axial and radial shim coils can be positioned within the static magnetic field and the current directed to the coils can be controlled as a result of the field mapping results in order to homogenize the static magnetic field.

  • Patent number: 4946774
Abstract: A process for detecting cancer in a human patient is provided wherein a blood serum is recovered from the patient and is reacted with a monoclonal antibody comprising anti-haptoglobin variant under conditions to effect an immunoreaction when an immunosuppressive factor having a molecular weight of about 50K Daltons is present in the serum. The presence of immunosuppressive factor at concentration levels substantially exceeding normal concentration levels indicates the existence of immunoincompetence due to widely spread cancer. The effectiveness of cancer therapy is monitored by monitoring the change in levels of the immunosuppressive haptoglobin variant factor in the serum from the patient being treated.
