Abstract: In a method for testing the visual field of a patient especially the central visual field, stereoscopic or binocularly displaced fixation images are presented under computer control to the respective eyes of the patient. In addition, a series of test images viewable by only one of the patient's eyes is generated under the control of the computer. The fixation images, one for each eye, are presented on two separate electronic displays, while the test images may be produced on a third display member different from the electronic displays. The computer is programmed to precisely determine a boundary between points corresponding to unseen test images and points corresponding to seen test images, by automatically testing additional points in a region located about the curve and between points corresponding to unseen test images and points corresponding to seen test images.

Abstract: Estimating one or more optical characteristics of a Device-Under-Test (DUT). The method, includes directing an optical wavefront, generated by a source, towards a test location and generating at least one ray from the wavefront at the test location. Then for each ray at two or more measurement planes, each measurement plane transverse to the direction of travel of the wavefront and beyond the test location relative to the source at different optical path distances, measuring respective points of intersection of the ray with the measurement planes with and without the DUT at the test location.
Abstract: A method for collecting a microbiological substance utilizes a micro fabricated biochip having a collection chamber. A fluid sample containing a microbiological entity of interest is delivered to the collection chamber in the biochip. Then a non-uniform electric field is generated in the collection chamber, to retain the microbiological entity of interest in the collection chamber. The microbiological entity is retained through dielectrophoresis induced by the energization of the electrodes by a periodically applied, alternating current.

A laser (14) introduces energy laterally with respect to the column (10) at a wavelength and in a direction selected to have a resonant mode within the capillary column wall (12) and couple to the medium (24). A detector (40) is positioned to detect Raman scattering occurring along the column (10) due to the presence of the target molecule.

Abstract: A method for removing hair from a skin surface includes removing protruding hair fibers from a skin surface in a plurality of temporally spaced treatment sessions by a process other than application of light energy. In each of the treatment sessions, one or more light pulses are applied to the skin surface to enhance the removal of hair by the process. The pulses are characterized by pulse parameters including radiation wavelength such that light of the pulses is absorbed by the hair fibers below the skin surface. The pulses are applied to the skin surface in the absence of an exogenous chromophore on the skin surface and the hair fibers along the skin surface. A hand held device includes a pulsed-light applicator and a cutting edge.
Abstract: A probe for electronic volume data acquisition using ultrasound incorporates a plurality of transducer elements arranged in a two dimensional array having an azimuth direction and an elevation direction. The transducer elements have a first element size in the azimuth dimension and a second element size in the elevation dimension. At least one of the first and second element sizes is at least twice a characteristic wavelength of a waveform used to drive the array of transducer elements, where the characteristic wavelength is defined as the wavelength corresponding to a center frequency of the waveform. Image data is generated in a scanning process using a CAC-BF technique in an azimuth dimension and/or an elevation dimension, to form an ultrasound image line, image plane, or image data cube.

Abstract: Micro-droplets of liquid confining organic molecules of interest are dried on selected planar solvo-phobic substrates under conditions facilitating segregated precipitation of the larger, less soluable analytes toward edge portions of the deposit. Micro-spectrometer imaging using white light and FTIR false color can identify points of interest, and the same optics generally directed perpendicularly to the substrates selectively captures normal Raman spectra from selected points in the deposit. The spectra are manipulated using various data techniques to extract reliable information concerning analytes present at pico-Molar levels. The selected spots can also be subjected to FTIR spectroscopy followed by MALDI mass spectroscopy to obtain a variety of information from the identical specimen.

Abstract: A medical cauterization snare includes a tubular member such as a catheter, a rod or wire disposed at least partially inside the tubular member, and a resilient loop of a first size attached to a distal end of the rod or wire. The loop includes a nose on a side of the loop opposite the wire. The loop further includes two loop sections each extending between the wire and the nose. The loop sections are each formed with a respective notch or dent for enabling a use of the loop in a second size smaller than the first size. Positioning the loop relative to the tubular member so that the notches or dents are disposed at a mouth opening of the tubular member generates this secondary deployment configuration.
Abstract: In a diamond manufacturing method, a melt of carbon and blue kimberlite is contained in a vessel at 1000° C. The vessel is pressurized by a gas of predominantly hydrogen to 200 atmospheres. A crystallization seed is drawn from the melt to generate a piece of diamond material.
Abstract: An automatic rolling machine with flat chasers, comprising a motionless plate and a movable plate. The movable plate is fixed to a supporting structure that has a reciprocating motion actuated by means of a spindle, crank and linkage, the spindle being supported by a base. The base comprises a first motionless part, which is rigidly coupled to the frame of the machine, and a second movable part, which constitutes the support for the spindle, the position of the movable part with respect to the motionless part being adjustable by a means for varying the position of the movable part with respect to the motionless part.
Abstract: In the operation of a computer, a plurality of bytecode or pseudocode instructions, at least some of the pseudocode instructions comprising a plurality of machine code instructions, are stored in a computer memory.
