Patent number: 8059366Abstract: A laminated write pole layer for a PMR write head is disclosed in which a plurality of “n” magnetic layers and “n?1” non-magnetic spacers are formed in an alternating fashion on a substrate. The non-magnetic spacers promote exchange decoupling or antiferromagnetic coupling between adjacent magnetic layers. Writability is improved when the trailing magnetic layer has a thickness greater than the thickness of other magnetic layers and preferably >25% of the total thickness of the magnetic layers. The thicknesses of the other magnetic layers may be equal or may become progressively smaller with increasing distance from the trailing magnetic layer. In another embodiment, the non-magnetic spacer between the trailing magnetic layer and the nearest magnetic layer is replaced by a magnetic spacer made of a soft magnetic material to promote magnetic coupling and effectively increase the thickness of the trailing magnetic layer.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2007Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: Headway Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Kenichi Takano, Lijie Guan, Yuchen Zhou, Joe Smyth, Moris Dovek

Patent number: 8059372Abstract: Biasing schemes used for CIP GMR devices were previously thought to be impractical for CPP devices due to current shunting by the abutted hard magnets. In the present invention the CPP stripe is a narrow conductor directly above the free layer. The resistivity of the latter is made to be relatively high so the sensing current diverges very little as it passes through it. This makes it possible to use abutted hard magnets for longitudinal bias with virtually no loss of sensing current due to shunting by the magnets.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2007Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: Headway Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Yimin Guo, Li-Yan Zhu

Patent number: 8059371Abstract: In a read-write head, the shields can serve as magnetic flux conductors for external fields, so that they direct a certain amount of flux into the recording medium. This problem has been overcome by the addition to the shields of a pair of tabs located at the edges closest to the ABS. These tabs serve to prevent flux concentrating at the edges so that horizontal fields at these edges are significantly reduced. The tabs need to have aspect ratios of at least 2 and may be either triangular or rectangular in shape. Alternatively, the tabs may be omitted and, instead, outer portions of the shield's lower edge may be shaped so as to slope upwards away from the ABS.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2010Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: Headway Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Lijie Guan, Moris Dovek

Patent number: 8054583Abstract: A dynamic fly heater (DFH) for improved lifetime and better film uniformity is disclosed for a magnetic head. The heater has a lower amorphous Ta layer and an upper W layer to promote small grain size and reduced electro-migration. The composite film is especially advantageous for heaters greater than 1000 Angstroms thick where dR/R is difficult to control in the prior art. The DFH may be a (Ta/W)n laminate in which the Ta layers are about 30 Angstroms thick and the combined thickness of the W layers is from 400 to 1200 Angstroms. A Ta film is preferably sputter deposited with an Ar pressure of 3 to 5 mTorr and the W film is sputter deposited in the same chamber with a 3 to 20 mTorr Ar pressure. In one embodiment, a merged read/write head has one DFH in the read head and a second DFH in the write head.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2008Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: Headway Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Min Zheng, Min Li, Chen-Jung Chien, Kowang Liu, Sung Chung

Patent number: 8054585Abstract: In a suspension in a hard disk drive, a gimbal with asymmetric dynamic properties, in which the two halves of the gimbal may have different stiffness distribution or inertia distribution. Structural difference between the two halves, or materials with different stiffness, may cause the different stiffness distribution or inertia distribution. When the suspension vibrates, the different stiffness and/or inertia distribution increase the friction between the gimbal and a load beam of the suspension, and increase the damping of the suspension.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2006Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: SAE Magnetics (HK) Ltd.Inventors: Qinghua Zeng, Yen Fu, Ellis Cha

Patent number: 8045295Abstract: Method and apparatus are presented for electrically coupling a slider to ground. In one embodiment, a bonding pad is provided on a side of the slider body separate from the bonding pad(s) used for read/write signals. This separate bonding pad is electrically coupled within the slider body to components that are to be coupled to ground. A separate conductor provided on the suspension (e.g., a trace, a flex circuit, etc.) may be electrically coupled to the separate bonding pad via gold ball bonding. The conductor is also coupled to ground in the hard-disk drive device (e.g., via the preamplifier). The use of the separated bonding pad and trace may negate the need to use a conductive adhesive to electrically ground the slider via its attachment to the tongue of a slider.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2008Date of Patent: October 25, 2011Assignee: SAE Magnetics (HK) Ltd.Inventors: Yen Fu, Ellis T. Patent number: 8045733Abstract: A backplateless silicon microphone and a wire protection method for improved impact resistance are disclosed. A circular diaphragm is surrounded by a circular spring having a plurality of slots and perforations to facilitate air damping reduction, release of in-plane stress, and improve out-plane flexibility. Anchored at a substrate, the circular spring holds the silicon microphone suspended over a backside hole in the substrate but allows the diaphragm to vibrate perpendicular to the substrate. A microphone variable capacitor is formed between the perforated spring and substrate. Slot size is minimized to prevent particles from entering an underlying air gap. A plurality of “n” bonding pads near the outer edge of the circular spring are connected by “n/2” bonding wires that serve as a stopper to restrict an upward motion of the diaphragm. The bonding wires may cross each other to enable lower loop height for more effective resistance to impact.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2007Date of Patent: October 25, 2011Assignee: Shandong Gettop Acoustic Co., Ltd.Inventors: Wang Zhe, Chong Ser Choong
