  • Patent number: 4985861
Abstract: For improvement in processing speed, a high-speed digital signal processor has a feedback loop from a register which stores the calculating result produced by a Signed Digit (SD) arithmetic unit to one of the input ports of the SD arithmetic unit. The SD arithmetic unit executes an arithmetic operation on an input digital signal and the arithmetic result is formed of both signed digit numbers without the need to convert the calculation result represented by an SD number into a binary number.

  • Patent number: 4984927
Abstract: Ceramic and metal shafts are joined at their ends by brazing, with a buffer member being interposed therebetween. The joined ends of the ceramic and metal shafts and the buffer member are received within a metal sleeve and joined by brazing to part of the inner circumferential wall of the metal sleeve in such a manner than an axial end of the joint where the inner circumferential wall is securely joined to the ceramic and metal shafts is positioned between opposite axial ends of the metal sleeve and at the same time between opposite axial ends of the ceramic shaft. The outer circumferential wall of the metal sleeve is formed with an annular groove in the place corresponding to the above mentioned axial end of the joint with respect to the axial direction of the metal sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4985716
Abstract: An apparatus for generating ions which can be operated by a low signal voltage. The apparatus includes, a first voltage source for applying to a first electrode a first voltage slightly less than a critical voltage for constant ion generation; and a second voltage source for applying to a second electrode a second voltage significantly less than the first voltage having such an amplitude that a total of the first and the second voltages exceeds the critical voltage such that the ion generation by the first electrode takes place only while the second voltage is being applied to the second electrode.

  • Patent number: 4984664
Abstract: In order to increase a torque transmission capacity of a lock-up clutch without any increase in the internal pressure of a torque converter, a lock-up clutch release circuit and a lock-up clutch engagement circuit share a primary relief valve, and the lock-up release circuit is further provided with a secondary relief valve disposed between a lock-up control valve and the torque converter. Thus, when the lock-up clutch engagement circuit is opened, the primary relief valve works to prevent the pressure of hydraulic fluid from increasing above a first predetermined value, whereas, when the lock-up clutch release circuit is opened, the secondary relief valve causes a drop in the hydraulic pressure and prevents the hydraulic pressure from increasing above a second predetermined value. The first predetermined value is higher than the second predtermined value.

  • Patent number: 4983447
Abstract: An opaque polyolefin film having a base layer composed essentially of propylene polymers and having sealing layers present on both sides, composed essentially of sealable olefin polymers, is disclosed. From about 0.2% to 1.5% by weight, relative to the layer of polydialkylsiloxane is incorporated in one of the two sealing layers, and this layer has not been subjected to corona treatment. The other sealing layer has been subjected to corona treatment and has polydialkylsiloxane, not incorporated, but present on the outer surface of this layer, the polydialkylsiloxane having been transferred to this layer by contact between the sealing layer in which polydialkylsiloxane is incorporated. The relative polydialkylsiloxane occupancy of this layer, which is determined by means of ESCA spectroscopy, is not more than 15. The three-layer opaque polyolefin film is prepared by the coextrusion process. It is particularly suitable for use as a packaging film on high-speed packaging machines.

  • Patent number: 4983307
Abstract: A process and apparatus for reducing the dissemination of aquatic organisms and decreasing the risk of diseases caused by fungi, such as Pythium and Phythophthora spp, in greenhouse plants grown hydroponically by Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) by treating the water to be used in the NFT with ultraviolet radiation at a wave length of 2537 .ANG. by passing the water in a zone of restricted width adjacent and exposed to the source of ultraviolet radiation and maintaining the temperature of the water in the range of 15.degree. C. to 26.degree. C. as it is passed at the zone. The apparatus includes an elongated cylindrical housing including a top cap and a bottom cap sealingly closing the cylindrical housing. A water inlet is located on the cylindrical housing near the bottom end cap and water outlet on the cylindrical housing near the top cap. An ultraviolet lamp in the form of an elongated cylindrical member extends concentrically within the housing and through the top cap and bottom cap.

  • Patent number: 4982688
Abstract: Apparatus in which glue is applied to an endless thread by running the thread successively through the bore of a nozzle needle and a nozzle aperture and, when the nozzle needle is retracted from a valve seat, coating the thread with glue which has been forced out of a surrounding chamber. The thread, together with this coating, passes through the nozzle bore. As soon as the nozzle needle is advanced up against the valve seat in the nozzle element, the glue feed ceases and coating ends, so that the thread takes with it at most only very small quantities of glue remaining in the nozzle bore and an exact cutoff of the glue coating is obtained. When the glue is injected around the thread, that is, when the glue is brought together with the thread under a specific pressure exerted on all sides, it is possible to obtain a substantially uniform coating of the thread surface with glue which allows all improved bonding of the thread over its length to the sheet-like structure.

  • Patent number: 4982681
Abstract: A disc-shaped marine structure fabricated of steel and/or concrete, able to support useful loads as great as 125,000 tonnes, is tethered to float stably in very deep water, with only minor response motions to wave of large amplitude and long period. A planar base disc of diameter about 135 up to 200 meters carries a centered primary buoyancy tank of span 2.5 to 4.5 times the draft. The strongly braced sidewall of the tank is spaced about 10 meters inward of the disc edge, defining one wall of an upwardly open confinement chamber. A thin cylindric outer shell wall extending upwardly from the margin of the base has about 26% to 35% of its area comprised of tubular passages set radially, of length and diameter about one meter or more. Radial bracking frameworks of 50% aperturing interconnect the tank with the base disc and outer wall.A mass of seawater approximately equal to the structure's displacement is largely confined, its volume/aperture ratio being about 800 m.sup.3 /m.sup.2.

  • Patent number: 4982529
Abstract: The invention relates to a profile for a seal comprising a metal reinforcement having a U-shaped cross-section. The reinforcement is sheathed with plastic. At least one virtually inextensible filament is embedded in the plastic in an intermediate zone between the profile and an associated sealing element in the region of the median fiber of the profile. According to the invention, the metal reinforcement is formed by bending a planar reinforcement into the shape of a U. The planar reinforcement comprises a succession of exposed rectangular elements having long sides perpendicular to the plane of symmetry of the U and short sides parallel to this plane of symmetry. The rectangular elements are joined to the contiguous elements by two spacers parallel to the plane of symmetry of the U.
