  • Patent number: 4936541
Abstract: A valve apparatus has a valve body with an inlet, an outlet and a main valve seat disposed therebetween. A complementary main valve member can be moved by an actuating piston/diaphragm between open and closed positions, or located at an intermediate position therebetween. The actuating piston/diaphragm has one side exposed to an actuating chamber which receives fluid from the inlet through a metering orifice on one side, and an opposite side exposed to outlet pressure. A servo valve assembly controls flow from, and pressure within, the actuating chamber and controls movement of the main valve member. The servo valve assembly can be positioned by a relatively low force actuator in any position between extremes thereof, and acts as a master for the main valve member which follows it as a slave between open and closed positions, and any intermediate positions therebetween. The actuator is protected from high fluid forces imposed on the main valve member.

  • Patent number: 4932372
Abstract: The invention includes an apparatus for retarding a turbocharged engine. There is a mechanism, such as a master and slave cylinder arrangement, for cracking open each exhaust valve of each cylinder of the engine near top dead center of each compression stroke. There is also provision for increasing the pressure of gases in the exhaust manifold sufficiently to open exhaust valves of other cylinders on the intake stroke after each exhaust valve on the compression stroke is so opened. The provision for increasing the pressure of gases in the exhaust manifold includes a device for diverting the exhaust gases to a restricted portion of the turbine nozzle, thereby increasing the pressure of gases directed onto the turbine blades and the pressure in the exhaust manifold.

  • Patent number: 4931332
Abstract: A non-warping and torque resistant structural panel including a top panel composed of four different size squares mounted on a base sheet. The squares when forming a pattern, have apices which are intermediate to and relatively offset from the apices of adjacent squares thereby forming relatively short vertically and horizontally extending intersecting lines, which resist warping and lateral torque.

  • Patent number: 4926532
Abstract: A piezoelectric vortex flow meter for determining the rate of fluid flow through piping including a hermetically sealed bluff body having a vortex generating plate operably associated with a sensing plate. The vortex generating plate is positioned perpendicular to the fluid flow for creating a "vortex street". A pair of piezoelectric sensors are disposed in a pair of recesses formed in the interior of the sensing plate. Sensing surfaces are formed on each side of the sensing plate adjacent the piezoelectric sensors. The sensing surfaces are formed such that the side surfaces of the sensing plate are free from any discontinuities. The vortices created by the vortex generating plate exert a force on the sensing surfaces which transmit a signal porportional to the force exerted, to the piezoelectric sensors. The piezoelectric sensors transform the mechanical energy into electrical energy readily readable with an appropriate electrical circuit.

  • Patent number: 4928257
Abstract: A method of monitoring the thickness of a longitudinally moving strip to permit quick detection of continuous defects includes the steps of scanning the strip a predetermined number of times measuring the thickness at a plurality of sites across the strip width for thereby generating a plurality of data sets, or scans, with each data set indicative of the thickness profile of the strip. The scans are smoothed by combining the data sets and thereby generating a single representative profile. Additional profiles are generated and displayed in three dimensional format so that a plurality of profiles in sequential relation are continuously displayed to permit a continuous defect, when occurring, to be detected and displayed from at least one profile to an immediately subsequent profile.
