  • Patent number: 8261158
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for storing information in a storage device that includes multi-level memory cells. The method involves storing data that is written to the storage device in the LSBs of the multi-level memory cells, and storing audit data in the MSBs of the multi-level memory cells. The audit data can be read separately from the data and used to determine whether or not there has been any unintended drift between states in the multi-level cells. The audit data may be used to correct data when the errors in the data are too numerous to be corrected using error correction code (ECC). The audit data may also be used to monitor the general health of the storage device. The monitoring process may run as a background process on the storage device. The storage device may transition the multi-level memory cells to operate as single-level memory cells.

  • Patent number: 8256607
Abstract: A monitoring system is provided for a moving conveyor belt having a plurality of embedded reinforcing cords and identification tags. A tag reader detects and identifies the identification tags passing by the tag reader while a belt monitor scans the cords to detect a plurality of magnetic reference points and a damage event of at least one cord. A control unit in communication with the belt monitor and the tag reader analyzes the belt monitor to identify the plurality of magnetic reference points and the damage event. The control unit also acquires a belt location on the moving conveyor belt from a belt map based on the detected and identified identification tag and a magnetic reference point from the plurality of magnetic reference points. When a damage event is identified, a location of the damage event is determined by the control unit based on the acquired belt location.

  • Patent number: 8260261
Abstract: A method, system and devices for enabling secure pairing between two communication devices equipped with a minimal user interface includes determining a verification pattern based upon security information exchanged between the two communication devices and presenting the verification pattern in a manner that can be perceived by a user who can determine whether the verification patterns are the same. The verification patterns may be presented as flashing light displays, such as flashing sequences of a light emitting diode, or as sounds, such as tones or click patterns emitted by a speaker. If a user perceives that the verification patterns emitted by both communication devices are the same, the user may so indicate by pressing a button on each of the devices. Obtaining such user confirmation of the verification patterns enables establishing a secure pairing between the two communication devices that is protected from active and passive eavesdropping.

  • Patent number: 8256312
Abstract: A transmission includes a controller that has a rapid-deceleration judge and a rapid-deceleration processor. The rapid-deceleration judge judges whether a vehicle is decelerating rapidly or not. The rapid-deceleration processor includes a torque-fluctuation inhibitor, and an after-rapid-deceleration change-speed stage anticipator. The torque-fluctuation inhibitor shuts off power transmission from a power source, or holds power transmission by way of a current change-speed stage or lower, when the vehicle is decelerating rapidly. The after-rapid-deceleration change-speed stage anticipator anticipates a subsequent change-speed stage being adapted for restarting or reaccelerating the vehicle that has come out of rapid deceleration.

  • Patent number: 8255912
Abstract: To set one or more events without intermediate scheduling of threads in a multi-threaded system, a scheduler is first rendered essentially ineffective. The events are then set, for example, by repeatedly calling a function to set a single event, once for each event to be set. The scheduler is then restored to its normal effectiveness. The scheduler may be rendered ineffective by artificially setting the priority of the current thread being processed to the highest possible priority level. This prevents the current thread from being preempted by another thread during the time that events are being set. After all events have been set, the priority of the current thread is restored to the original priority level, which then restores the scheduler to its normal effectiveness.

  • Patent number: 8253304
Abstract: The invention relates to an ultrasonic linear drive unit comprising a driving element as an ultrasonic oscillator with two generators for ultrasonic vibrations and a driven element that forms a frictional contact with the driving element, and an electrical excitation source for the driving element. According to the invention, the ultrasonic oscillator is designed as a hollow thin-walled piezoelectric cylinder, the height H of which is identical to or smaller than the mean diameter D thereof. The generators for ultrasonic vibrations are symmetrically disposed on both sides relative to the sectional plane S that extends through the center of the height of the ultrasonic oscillator, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis L thereof. The cylinder surface of the driving element is in contact with the driven element, and the electrical excitation source is connected to the ultrasonic linear drive unit in such a way that the drive unit excites only the first or the second generator for ultrasonic vibrations.

  • Patent number: 8254849
Abstract: An FM radio with a wide frequency range operates in a cell phone without interfering with the VCO of the RF transceiver. The FM transceiver generates a VCO signal whose frequency varies by less than ±7% from the midpoint of a narrow first range. A synthesizer signal is generated by dividing the VCO frequency by a first divisor such that the synthesizer frequency varies over a lower frequency second range. The VCO frequency is also divided by a second divisor such that the synthesizer frequency varies over a third range. The upper limit of the second range falls at the lower limit of the third range. The lower limit of the second range is 85.5 MHz and the upper limit of the third range is 108.0 MHz. By also using a third divisor, a synthesizer signal with a range of 76-108 MHz is generated from the narrow first frequency range.
