Abstract: Information can be communicated by a temperature change of a communication device equipped with one or more temperature modifying elements. A processor configured by software determines when a temperature change should be generated and accomplishes such a change by controlling the application of power to the temperature modifying element(s). The temperature modifying elements may be electric resistance heating elements, thermoelectric elements, or other elements. Users perceive the temperature change produced by the temperature modifying element(s) when they touch the device. Depending on user settings, the temperature change may communicate specific information to the user. For example, a temperature change may convey information regarding the importance of an incoming telephone call, e-mail message or SMS message, or the importance of an impending calendar event. Using temperature as a communication medium allows the communication device to convey information to a user being notice by others.

Abstract: A system and method of ensuring hardware security of a device, such as an integrated circuit having secure data stored thereon. The integrated circuit or other hardware device can implement one or more configurable fuses that limit access to one or more secure locations within the device. The secure locations may contain secure data. The state of the configurable fuses can be ensured, thereby limiting access to secure locations, by forcing the occurrence of a logical state prior to allowing access to hardware locations configured by the fuses. A configurable non-secure access code can be used to force the occurrence of the logical state. Receipt of the non-secure access code by the hardware device forces the occurrence of the hardware state, thereby ensuring access only to those secure locations configured by the fuses.
Abstract: A wind turbine captures energy from a flowing fluid medium using drum-shaped drive elements that spin while traveling along a continuous orbiting course around a base. Attached roller bearings engaging stationary raceways can guide the drive elements. Means for spinning the drive elements can include toothed belts engaging drive element cog wheels. Spinning can provide Magnus effect enhancement. Wind energy is captured by the drive element motion, then transferred to the base cog wheels by a toothed belt and finally fed to an output shaft. The invention includes locating drive elements in a moving fluid medium, spinning the drive elements as they are urged by the wind along a continuous orbiting course and capturing energy by linking the motion of the drive elements to an external device. The method includes adjusting the base's azimuth and the angle of incidence of the wind in response to wind direction and speed.

Abstract: A method for fabricating a semiconductor device includes forming landing plugs over a substrate, forming a trench by etching the substrate between the landing plugs, forming a buried gate to partially fill the trench, forming a gap-fill layer to gap-fill an upper side of the buried gate, forming protruding portions of the landing plugs, and trimming the protruding portions of the landing plugs.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for tuning the audio path response of an audio device are described herein. The audio output of an audio device is captured and monitored over a predetermined frequency band. The frequency response of the captured audio output can be compared to one or more predetermined limits defining an acceptable frequency response. One or more dynamically configurable bands can be defined, and one or more parameters affecting the response within each configurable band can be adjusted. A simulated frequency response is produced and filter coefficients for a corresponding filter within the audio path are determined. The filter coefficients can be loaded to a digital filter within the audio path to modify the actual frequency response produced by the audio device.

Abstract: The present invention implements a method and system for dynamically adapting the modulation and coding scheme for radio links in a wireless communications network based on a retransmission environment model in order to maximize throughput and most efficiently allocate bandwidth resources. The present invention encompasses a refined calculus and methodology for deriving the link adaptation thresholds in a retransmission environment using a complex model and analysis of the retransmission environment. The present invention holds particular application for wireless data communications as opposed to real time data services because it is based on a retransmission model applicable primarily for data services. A critical component of this new link adaptation system is a “no transmission” cutoff mode that is selected for SIR below a base threshold value. This new mode prevents system instability and misallocation of bandwidth in a wireless communication system.
