  • Patent number: 4555611
Abstract: To heat articles in the vacuum container as uniformly as possible by bombarding them with electrons from a low voltage arc discharge, the plasma flame is not directed at the articles as hitherto usual, but caused to extend past the articles to be heated, by providing a magnetic field in which the lines of magnetic force favoring the propagation of the plasma extend in a direction skirting the surfaces of the articles. Preferably, a magnetic field is provided which is parallel to the axis of the plasma flame, and the articles to be heated are arranged cylindrically around the flame.

  • Patent number: 4554133
Abstract: A highly sensitive test tube according to the invention increases the sensitivity of detection of a component in a gas substantially and thus enlarges the area of use of the test tube. It possesses a reagent strip impregnated according to the gas to be detected, which strip is held by a granular fill material between holding elements. The test gas, conveyed by a pump through the test tube, from which test gas the gas to be detected is removed at the reagent strip, is continually moved through the granular fill material and thoroughly mixed, so that the actual continually decreasing concentration of the gas component is available at the reagent strip. Upon complete removal of this gas component by reaction with the reagent strip, the concentration can then be read at the reagent strip. The narrow reagent strip, which takes up the entire gas component, evidences even small admixtures.

  • Patent number: 4554249
Abstract: A novel enzyme of bilirubin oxidase produced by a genus Myrothecium or genus Coprinus origin microorganism and a conventional enzyme of laccase are found, in the presence of a specific additive compound, e.g. a surface active agent, aromatic carboxylic acid, sulfa drug or protease, to oxidize both conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin in biological fluid to biliverdin without formation of hydrogen peroxide, such that in the case of conventional enzymatic methods of the quantitative determination of glucose, cholesterol, neutral fats, free fatty acids, phospholipids or uric acid all existing together with bilirubin in biological fluid, the usual interference with such determination, as otherwise caused by bilirubin coexisting in such fluid, can be prevented by adding such a bilirubin oxidase or laccase together with such a specific additive compound to the determinative reaction system.

  • Patent number: 4552070
Abstract: A solid fuel rocket engine comprises a casing which defines a combustion chamber with a solid propellant charge in the combustion chamber and an insulating layer of a water containing alkali silicate and fibers disposed between the casing and the charge. The layer is a type which will froth at a predetermined temperature which occurs during burn off of the propellant charge so that it increases in its thickness dimension in the area of the hot gases which develop and provides an adequate insulation. A method of producing the layer comprises heating the alkali silicate layer to a temperature in which it becomes plastic and sheathing the propellant charge with the plastic layer. Thereafter the sheath charge is inserted into the combustion chamber casing leaving an annular gap between this layer and combustion chamber casing. Thereafter heat is applied to the vicinity of the chamber to cause the layer to froth and expand to close the annular gap.

  • Patent number: 4551858
Abstract: A protective helmet has its head harness constructed as a cooling gear. The harness forms a lining of the inside of a helmet shell and comprises two elastic sheets connected to each other by seams. The sheets are cut to double segments which are connected to each other at the top by an annular channel. The double segments are divided by longitudinal and transverse webs to form communicating cells. The space between the sheets is filled with a coolant which is introduced through annular channel in a liquid state. The double segments are connected to each other by a cross band through which the head harness is buttoned in, onto retaining buttons inside the helmet. To cool down, the harness can easily be unbuttoned and later put in place again in the same simple manner.

  • Patent number: 4552358
Abstract: A golf ball ejection device for use with a golf course hole liner comprising a golf ball support which is adapted to be positioned in the liner and which will move upwardly to eject the ball out of the liner hole after it is driven into the hole by a golfer. The apparatus will position the golf ball on the green which is at an elevation above the lowermost extremity of the hole so that it will be more easily accessible to the golfer. The ball may be ejected out of the liner by pressing a flag pole of the hole against a fluid pressure cylinder connected to a piston which causes the support for the ball to move upwardly in the liner and the ball to roll off the support plate onto the green.

  • Patent number: 4552139
Abstract: In anaesthetics evaporators, the gas flow conducted through them is enriched with an anaesthetic contained in the evaporator to a desired concentration. In the anaesthetics evaporator the gas flow is divided into two part flows, the by-pass flow and the evaporating chamber flow. Both part flows are regulated by valves and regulators to obtain an exact relative flow ratio. To achieve this, this ratio must be maintained and monitored. The monitoring equipment is simple and can be retrofitted. It includes a differential pressure measuring instrument and a thermometer with a holder. The differential pressure measuring instrument is a differential pressure manometer connected via hoses and an adapter to both the inlet and outlet of the gas flow to the anaesthetics units. The thermometer to measure the evaporating temperature is fastened in well heat conducting manner to the anaesthetics evaporator by means of a holder.

  • Patent number: 4551097
Abstract: A dual-torque winding tool for winding a coil of a retainerless dental matrix comprises a handle which can be held and rotated in the hand. A barrel is axially movable within a blind channel defined in the handle, with the handle being rotatable with and over the rotatable barrel. Two separate torque transmitting mechanisms are provided for establishing co-rotation between the handle and the barrel at two separate torque values. In one form of the invention the two separate torque values are established by two spring loaded balls which are under different biasing forces and which each can selectively engage into one of a single set of socket holes. Axial movement of the barrel for bringing one or the other ball into engagement with the socket holes establishes the selected torque value. Another form of the invention uses two separate sets of socket holes each having holes with a different diameter and engageable by a single spring loaded ball.

  • Patent number: 4550685
Abstract: A device for supplying farm animals with a liquid feed from an automatic feeding device comprises a flexible feed discharge line connected to the feed device and terminating in an animal operated discharge member or sucker. The sucker is supported by a member which is moved back and forth on a conveyor in the form of an overhead trolley. The liquid feed connecting line which connects the feeder is flexible and it is moved over a support which is advantageously on a level substantially equal to that of the feeder so that the connecting line is supported as the end thereof carrying the sucker is moved by the overlying conveyor. Because the sucker may be displaced into a plurality of different feeding stations in a controlled manner, feed can be supplied in a controlled manner and accurately metered in accordance with the feed to be given out at each station.

  • Patent number: 4551123
Abstract: A container comprises a paper base member covered all around by a heat-shrinkable plastic film. Air is removed from a space formed by the film in which the paper base member is disposed to bring the film against the base member, and at least a part of the film is sealed for closing the space. The base member is either originally formed into the shape of the container, or later formed into the shape of the container to define at least one open end. The open end is covered by a metal lid. A method of making the container includes covering the base member with heat-shrinkable plastic film forming a double wall with the base member in a space between the double wall, removing air from the space between the double wall and sealing the space. Heat applied to the container, for example for sterilizing contents of the container, also shrinks the plastic film to produce a wrinkle-free fit between the film and the paper base member.
