  • Patent number: 6393002
Abstract: A digital telephone system for processing a plurality of information signals received in parallel over telephone lines from a public network exchange which are then transmitted in parallel over a plurality of radio frequency (RF) channels to a plurality of mobile subscriber units, each capable of receiving on any of those RF channels, includes an exchange, signal compressors, a multiplexer, a transmitter and a central processing unit. The central processing unit is responsive to a received connection request signal by providing an assignment signal indicating a slot and an RF channel to be used for the respective information signal. The central processing unit maintains a memory of which slots and which RF channels are so assigned and consults the memory upon receipt of the connection request signal and then provides the assignment signal that establishes the utilization of one of the slots at one of the RF channels that is not assigned to another information signal.

  • Patent number: 6389388
Abstract: A speech signal is encoded using code excited linear prediction for use in transmitting the speech signal to a receiver. The speech signal is sampled. A current sample of the speech signal is predicted based on in part a previous sample. An innovation sequence is determined based on in part a prediction error between the predicted current sample and the current sample of the speech signal. A code from each of a plurality of codebooks is selected. A combination of the selected codes is the determined innovation sequence. An index of the selected codes is identified and transmitted to the receiver. The transmitted index enables reconstruction of the speech signal at the receiver.

  • Patent number: 6385577
Abstract: A version of a speech signal and an output of a pitch synthesis filter and a linear predictive all-pole (LPC) filter is received. A system impulse response is produced based on in part the received pitch synthesis filter and LPC output. An excitation pulse location is determined so that the determined location minimizes an error between the speech signal version and the system impulse response. The speech signal is encoded with a representation of the determined location.

  • Patent number: 6381264
Abstract: A multiple access, spread-spectrum communication tracking system includes apparatus which tracks a centroid of a transmitted code-division multiplexed (CDM) code sequence that is contaminated with multipath distortion. The apparatus includes an analog to digital converter which digitally samples the spread-spectrum channel signal to produce a sequence of sample values. The sample values are divided into a set of even-numbered sample values which correspond to early multipath signal components and the set of odd sample number values which correspond to the multipath signal components. The centroid tracking receiver generates a plurality of local code sequences, each of which is a code phase-shifted version of the transmitted code sequence. The centroid tracking receiver correlates each of the locally generated code sequences with the odd and even numbered sample values, respectively, to produce a group of early despread multipath signals and a group of late despread multipath signals.

  • Patent number: 6377620
Abstract: The present invention balances the amplitude and phase of a received QPSK signal that may have been corrupted during transmission. The system determines the amplitude of the I and Q symbols of a received signal, compares them, and applies a correction to one or both channels to correct for amplitude imbalance. For phase imbalance, the system calculates the cross-correlation of the I and Q symbols which should average to zero. A correction factor is derived from the cross-correlation and applied to both channels, returning the phase cross-correlation to zero. The output from the system is a signal corrected in both amplitude and phase.

  • Patent number: 6373877
Abstract: A user equipment for receiving a data signal transmitted from a plurality of antennas. Each of the plurality of antennas also transmitting a first signal. The user equipment filtering the received first signal using pseudo random chip code sequences associated with the first signals and weighting each of the filtered first signals by a particular weight. The user equipment combines the weighted first signals to produce a combined signal and adaptively adjusts each first signal with that first signal's particular weight based on in part a signal quality of the combined signal. The user equipment receives each transmitting antennas version of the data signal and filters each version with its associated chip code. The filtered versions are combined to recover data.

  • Patent number: 6373830
Abstract: A CDMA wireless digital communication system which supports all types of voice and data communications while utilizing the minimum amount of bandwidth for the particular application. The system efficiently allocates ISDN bandwidth on demand by a subscriber. Upon initialization of the subscriber unit, the system establishes a channel and generates the necessary spreading codes to support the highest capacity channel desired by the subscriber unit. Portions of the communication spectrum bandwidth are not reserved until actually required by the subscriber unit. Since the call setup is performed at the beginning of a call from that subscriber unit, including the assignment of spreading codes, a subscriber unit can quickly gain access to the portion of the spectrum that is required to support the particular application.

  • Patent number: 6347111
Abstract: A spread spectrum noise shaper uses a modulation technique to achieve a greater signal-to-noise or signal-to-interference ratio (SNR or SIR). The technique doubles the system SIR, in principle. This doubling yields a doubling in system capacity. SNR is increased by receiving the spread spectrum signal in the presence of less noise near the edge of the spread spectrum bandwidth. The technique requires only small additions to a conventional spread spectrum system, in the form of an extra modulator at the transmitter, and an extra demodulator and filter at the receiver.

  • Patent number: 6314731
Abstract: Thermal machines are known in prior art. They generally differ considerably from the theoretically most advantageous engine in respect of pressure-volume cycles or have a complicated structure. The object of the present invention is to eliminate these drawbacks and achieve a new type of thermal machine. The advantages of the invention include a nearly ideal phasing of pressure-volume cycles, built-in power regulation and insignificant mechanical losses. This is achieved by using inversely linked connecting rods (9), four-chamber cylinders and a crankshaft (7) provided with rolling contact bearings with insertable rolling elements.

  • Patent number: 6282846
Abstract: A sleeve-like container fabricated from a waterproof material, comprising an upper and lower surface with a hollow interior filled with salt. At least a portion of the lower surface is perforated with a plurality of openings and is positioned with the lower perforated surface in contact with the upper surface of a flat, sloped roof to provide wicking absorption of water flowing down the roof into the salt. Absorption of water by the salt and leads to release of the resulting saline solution through the perforated openings to the surface of the roof, preventing formation of ice on the roof downstream of the plastic sleeve and in the roof drain. The waterproof container with the packed salt is, preferably, secured to the surface of the roof by an adhesive tape, or a weight attached to or lying upon opposite ends of the container. In another embodiment, the de-icer is a solid block of a pressed, granulated salt having a top portion water-proofed to prevent rapid deterioration due to precipitation.
