  • Patent number: 5941309
Abstract: The present invention relates to tools for use in wellbores which are actuated by means of actuating balls. The invention provides a method of actuating a tool located in a wellbore, the method comprising the sequential steps of: (a) locating a frangible actuating ball (2) on a seat, the seat being provided in the tool for receiving the actuating ball (2); (b) pumping fluid down a tubing string attached to the tool so as to apply a force to the seat and thereby actuate the tool, the force being transmitted to the seat through the actuating ball (2); and (c) breaking the actuating ball (2) to permit fluid to flow through the seat. The invention has the advantage over the prior art of providing means for actuating a downhole tool with an actuating ball (2) so that the actuating ball (2) does not form an undesirable obstruction once the tool has been actuated.

  • Patent number: 5942874
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of ensuring the stability of a synchronous machine in controlling the synchronous machine on the basis of direct control of flux and torque, in which the torque generated by the synchronous machine is increased/decreased by increasing/decreasing the instantaneous angular velocity of the stator flux. In accordance with the invention, the method comprises the steps of determining the direction of the stator flux vector (.psi.s) in rotor coordinates (dq), and forcing the stator flux vector (.psi.s) to remain in quadrants I and IV (Q1, Q4) of the rotor coordinates by rotating the stator flux in the rotor coordinates to a necessary degree.

  • Patent number: 5938167
Abstract: A Christmas tree stand for positioning and securing a tree. The stand includes a tree holder, which has a substantially spherical portion and a fastening portion for affixing the holder to the tree, and a base which has at least three pivotable legs for securing the holder and a receiving portion for receiving the holder. Each of the legs is positioned in such a way that the tree's intrinsic weight causes the legs to press against the holder, thereby securing the holder and the tree. The receiving portion and the legs are constructed with mutually cooperating parts to allow the legs be positioned in an intermediate position when the stand rests on a support, and to allow the holder, which is secured to the tree, to be inserted into the receiving portion of the stand.

  • Patent number: 5939803
Abstract: An off mains switching system automatically switches off the mains current to current consuming units and reestablishes operational voltage thereto in response to switching on of such units. A control circuit actuates a voltage coupler in response to a unit becoming switched on and interrupts the voltage supply as a result of a detected termination of noticeable current consumption by such unit. The control circuit includes an operation capacitor with a relatively high capacity to which a charging voltage is supplied as long as the mains are connected. The operating capacitor operates as a voltage source for actuation of a control system in response to restarting of the unit. The control circuit further includes means for internally enabling a connection with the mains for maintaining a voltage supply for the control circuit when the charge on the capacitor drops below a critical level.

  • Patent number: 5928957
Abstract: Starting from two non-miscible phases, i.e., a lipophilic and a hydrophilic phase, a surface-active substance and a recognition component, a micellar recognition system is built in a suitable manner and is incorporated into a layer structure. The micellar recognition system is provided in a single thin layer in which the recognition component is distributed homogeneously. Additional layers which may be provided about this layer, have an influence on the properties of the entire layer structure. On contact between the layer structure and the substance to be measured a recognition step takes place in the layer which is followed by a transducing step. In this way a measurement variable is produced by means of which information is obtained on the substance. The layer structures exhibit higher sensitivity, a lower detection threshold, short response time and special robustness with regard to sample interference.

  • Patent number: 5928412
Abstract: A method is disclosed by which vapour is cleaned of gaseous impurities during evaporation of polluted liquids. Vapour is conducted via a boiler, a compressor to a heat exchanger (12) in which condensation takes place. In order to clean the vapour, a scrubber (14) is arranged between the boiler (3) and the heat exchanger (12), in which the vapour is scrubbed in several steps (17, 18) at different pH values. Thus, the step (17) is an acid step, whereas the step (18) is an alkaline step. In this manner, the vapour for condensation may be conducted into the heat exchanger and be condensed in order to remove a clean condensate without pollution of acid or alkaline substances.
