Abstract: Liquid 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane containing contaminating unsaturated carbon compounds is treated with chlorine and ultraviolet light to convert the unsaturated contaminants to photochlorination products. The photochlorination products are thereafter separated from 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane, such as by distillation. The process is particularly useful in separating vinylidene chloride from 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane.
Abstract: Heterogeneous copolymers of vinylidene fluoride and chlorotrifluoroethylene are obtained by copolymerization in suspension or emulsion in two stages. In a first stage the vinylidene fluoride and the chlorotrifluoroethylene are copolymerized, and in a second stage the polymerization of vinvylidene fluoride is continued after discontinuance of the introduction of chlorotrifluoroethylene.

The composition comprises:(a) a vinylidene fluoride-based polymer;(b) an acrylic polymer containing hydrolyzable silyl groups and isocyanate groups; and(c) at least one organic solvent.
Abstract: A copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene having piezoelectric properties useful at elevated temperatures. Abstract: An ultrasonic nozzle includes an atomizing surface for producing an atomized liquid spray; a liquid-feed passageway for supplying the process liquid to the atomizing surface, the passageway having a first diameter section and a second fluidly connected smaller diameter section, with a shoulder defined therebetween; an internal shut-off assembly for preventing the supply of process liquid to the atomizing surface, the shut-off assembly including a shut-off rod slidably positioned within the passageway and having a sealing end adapted to cooperate with the shoulder to prevent the supply of process liquid to the atomizing surface, an actuator piston connected with the opposite end of the shut-off rod and slidable within a cylinder bore that is in fluid communication with the passageway, and a valve actuator for slidably moving the piston and shut-off rod in the passageway between a first closed position in which the supply of liquid to the atomizing surface is prevented and a second open position in which the su
Abstract: A coating applicator is provided for depositing a film on a surface of glass and other substrates by chemical vapor deposition. The applicator includes a pair of opposing coating nozzles for applying a vaporized coating chemical reactant in a carrier gas to the surface at such a concentration and velocity that coating of the surface is achieved under substantially reaction rate controlled conditions. Each coating nozzle is positioned adjacent the surface with a small clearance therebetween which is open to the outside atmosphere. The opposing coating nozzles are directed toward each other at a selected angle with respect to a normal to the surface of the substrate. The angle and the clearance provides a condition where there is substantially no intermixing of coating vapors with the outside atmosphere.
Abstract: Novel chromium plating baths suitable for electrodepositing chromium layers which are bright, adherent, smooth and hard, and are capable of being formed at both high and low current densities, and at high cathodic current efficiencies, consist essentially of chromic acid and sulfoacetic acid in a concentration range of about 40 to 150 g/l., and selenate or tellurate ion. Sulfate ion, if present, is included in low concentrations such that the Cr/SO.sub.4 ratio is high, preferably 300:1 or more.

Abstract: A tube extends through a wall of a vessel and is adapted to carry an ultraviolet emitter for use with a photochemical reaction vessel. An end of the tube disposed outside of the vessel is mounted within a support which forms a ball joint for that end of the tube. That joint allows the tube to pivot slightly in response to forces acting on the portion of the tube disposed within the vessel, thereby resisting any breaking or bending of the tube which might otherwise occur. A lip seal is disposed around the tube at a location intermediate the ball joint and the vessel to prevent the escape of fluids from the vessel past the tube.
