  • Patent number: 4948479
Abstract: Liquid 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane containing contaminating unsaturated carbon compounds is treated with chlorine and ultraviolet light to convert the unsaturated contaminants to photochlorination products. The photochlorination products are thereafter separated from 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane, such as by distillation. The process is particularly useful in separating vinylidene chloride from 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane.

  • Patent number: 4928627
Abstract: A coating applicator is provided for depositing a film on a surface of glass and other substrates by chemical vapor deposition. The applicator includes a pair of opposing coating nozzles for applying a vaporized coating chemical reactant in a carrier gas to the surface at such a concentration and velocity that coating of the surface is achieved under substantially reaction rate controlled conditions. Each coating nozzle is positioned adjacent the surface with a small clearance therebetween which is open to the outside atmosphere. The opposing coating nozzles are directed toward each other at a selected angle with respect to a normal to the surface of the substrate. The angle and the clearance provides a condition where there is substantially no intermixing of coating vapors with the outside atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4919458
Abstract: A tube extends through a wall of a vessel and is adapted to carry an ultraviolet emitter for use with a photochemical reaction vessel. An end of the tube disposed outside of the vessel is mounted within a support which forms a ball joint for that end of the tube. That joint allows the tube to pivot slightly in response to forces acting on the portion of the tube disposed within the vessel, thereby resisting any breaking or bending of the tube which might otherwise occur. A lip seal is disposed around the tube at a location intermediate the ball joint and the vessel to prevent the escape of fluids from the vessel past the tube.
