Abstract: The invention relates to low density cellular, rigid polyurethanes which employ the dimethyl esters of adipic, glutaric and succinic acids and mixtures thereof in conjunction with nonylphenol as cell-opening agents. The use of this ester phenol mixture obviates the need of other surfactants, particularly silicone surfactants which reduce the adhesion of the urethanes to fabrics in pour-behind-fabric applications.

Abstract: Apparatus for cutting and renewed feeding of a running-in web of material, in particular on turning winders, the web (1) of material being pressed by a deflecting roller (5) against an empty winding sleeve (2), which it partially wraps around and, immediately after leaving the winding sleeve, a cutting knife (3), which extends transversely to the run of the web and is held on both sides by guide bands, cutting through the web from its lower side at the cutting point (12) and a feeding brush, firmly connected to the cutting knife, feeding the newly created beginning of the web to the winding sleeve. The entire cutting means can be swiveled away, so that a turning winder can be used to take off a finished-wound roll, fit an empty winding sleeve and turn the means, so that a new winding sleeve is able to be swiveled into the operating position (FIG. 1).
Abstract: A process for recovering caprolactam from waste containing both polycaprolactam and materials which are insoluble in acidic solvents for polycaprolactam includes agitating the waste in an acidic solvent capable of dissolving polycaprolactam without degrading the acid insoluble materials, separating the solution containing polycaprolactam from the acid insoluble materials, feeding the solution containing the polycaprolactam to a depolymerization reactor, without substantially precipitating the polycaprolactam and depolymerizing the polycaprolactam solution to obtain substantially pure caprolactam.
Abstract: A method for making low density (0.8-2 lb/cu.ft.) expanded polymeric products uses blowing agent in an amount of only from 2 to 4.4 weight percent, the process emitting blowing agent during processing in an amount of from only about 0.3 to about 2.5 weight percent. The process uses 2 to 5 expansion steps together with a polymer having a particular polydispersity, weight average molecular weight and M.sub.z :M.sub.n, this polymer having a greater expandability than conventional polymers. The process requires only about half of the amount of blowing agent currently being used in commercially viable processes for making expanded polystyrene products. The process can be used with or without a molding step.
