    Abstract: Substituted phenols of the general formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are each hydrogen or an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, are prepared by dehydrogenating a cyclic alcohol of the general formula II ##STR2## or a cyclic ketone of the general formula III ##STR3## where one of the broken lines can be an additional C-C bond, in the gas phase at from 150.degree. to 380.degree. C. over a supported noble metal catalyst, by a process in which the dehydrogenation catalyst used is palladium or platinum on an aluminum spinel carrier, in particular an aluminum spinel which has a BET specific surface area of from 5 to 150 m.sup.2 /g or, for the dehydrogenation of cyclohexenones, preferably from 10 to 50 m.sup.2 /g. Particularly suitable aluminum spinels are those which, in addition to aluminum, contain magnesium, zinc, cobalt or nickel.

    Abstract: Nylons are prepared by a continuous process in which, in an evaporator zone, an aqueous solution of a salt of a dicarboxylic acid of 6 to 18 carbon atoms and a diamine of 6 to 18 carbon atoms is heated to 250.degree.-300.degree. C. under superatmospheric pressure, with simultaneous vaporization of water and formation of a prepolymer, the prepolymer and the vapors are separated continuously, the vapors are rectified and the entrained diamines are recycled, and the prepolymer is fed to a polycondensation zone and subjected to polycondensation under superatmospheric pressure of from 1 to 10 bar and at from 250.degree. to 300.degree. C., wherein the aqueous salt solution is heated under superatmospheric pressure of from 1 to 10 bar during a residence time of less than 60 seconds, with the proviso that, on leaving the evaporator zone, the degree of conversion is not less than 93% and the water content of the prepolymer is not more than 7% by weight.

    Abstract: A process for consolidating the surface of a granular adsorbent, wherein a water-containing adsorbent, which has taken up 25-70% by weight of the maximum possible amount of water, is heated to a temperature at which the water taken up evaporates, and is at the same time treated with an aqueous dispersion of a self-crosslinking copolymer, and the adsorbent thus coated is heated to a temperature at which the copolymer crosslinks. The coated adsorbent has virtually the same adsorption and desorption properties as the untreated adsorbent, but in contrast exhibits substantially improved abrasion resistance.
