Abstract: A photopolymerizable composition for the production of water-developable printing plates and relief plates, based on a water-soluble or water-dispersible mixture, containing a photoinitiator, of(a) one or more water-soluble or water-dispersible polymers containing copolymerized N-vinylpyrrolidone units and/or one or more polymers containing vinyl alcohol units and(b) one or more olefinically unsaturated photopolymerizable monomers, which comprises, as an additive or as the sole polymer, a water-soluble modified vinyl alcohol polymer which contains from 5 to 75, especially from 10 to 60, % by weight of chemically bonded oxyethylene units. These modified vinyl alcohol polymers are in particular oxyethylated polyvinyl alcohol or hydrolyzed graft polymers of vinyl esters onto polyethylene glycols. The compositions are easier to process into printing plates and relief plates, and exhibit a long shelf life.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of wear-resistant magnetic recording media comprising a dimensionally stable base, a thin ferromagnetic metal layer, containing cobalt and/or nickel, firmly bonded thereto and a thin protective layer applied thereon. The protective layer is produced by treating the recording medium in a liquid basic medium, containing gaseous oxygen, for from 1 to 60 minutes at from 5.degree. to 70.degree. C., washing and drying the treated recording medium and then heating it in air at from 170.degree. to 300.degree. C. This method offers a particularly simple way of providing the ferromagnetic layer of the recording medium with a thin but uniform, mechanically stable and wear-resistant protective layer.

Abstract: The novel compound (3-nitro-4-methyl)-phenyl chloroformate is prepared by reacting (4-methyl)-phenyl chloroformate with nitric acid in the presence of sulfuric acid. The novel compound (3-nitro-4-methyl)-phenyl chloroformate is a valuable starting material for the preparation of dyes and crop protection agents and in particular is an intermediate for the preparation of 3-nitro-4-methylphenol, which is reduced to 3-amino-4-methylphenol.
Abstract: A process for dyeing grain leather with anionic dyes under the conventional conditions for exhaustion methods, in the presence of two specific surfactants. The combined use of the two surfactants results, in the case of cationically tanned (essentially mineral-tanned) leather, in an improvement in the levelness and dye penetration and in the case of anionically tanned (synthetics-tanned or vegetable-tanned) or retanned leather, in an increase in depth of the color. The two surfactants are(a) an aliphatic alcohol of 9 to 24 carbon atoms oxyethylated with from 3 to 120 ethylene oxide units and(b) an aliphatic amine of 8 to 20 carbon atoms oxyethylated with from 6 to 80 ethylene oxide units, and they are used in a weight ratio of a:b of from 1:4 to 4:1 and in a total amount of from 0.3 to 3%, based on shaved weight.

Abstract: This invention concerns a new carrier catalyst, the active mass of which contains silver, a process for its manufacture and a process for the manufacture of ethylene oxide by reacting oxygen-containing gases with ethylene by using this catalyst. This carrier catalyst comprising a carrier material and a catalyst, the active mass of which is 20 to 90 percent by weight of silver, 0.005 to 5 percent by weight of lithium, and 3 to 70 percent by weight of SiO.sub.2 in free form or in the form of silicates, is extremely well suited for the manufacture of ethylene oxide by adding oxygen to ethylene.
Abstract: Particulate expandable styrene polymers which contain an organic bromine compound as the flameproofing agent and an organic compound possessing a labile C--C, O--O or N.dbd.N bond as the synergistic agent for flameproofing. The flameproofing agent is applied to the surface of the particles while the synergistic agent is homogeneously incorporated into the particles. The polymers can be converted to self-extinguishing foams.

Abstract: Fluorine compounds which are contained in the vapors obtained when evaporatively concentrating phosphoric acid are removed by scrubbing with an aqueous solution of fluosilicic acid under reduced pressure at a temperature at which condensation of steam is substantially avoided. The aqueous fluosilicic acid solutions are injected, at a speed of from 15 m/s to 40 m/s, into the upper part of a scrubbing zone, finely dispersed over the entire cross-section of the latter. The vapors are passed through the scrubbing zone at a speed of from 5 to 30 m/s, in co-current with the fluosilicic acid solutions. The residence time of the vapors in the scrubbing zone is from 0.4 to 1.5 s. The fluosilicic acid taken off the scrubbing zone contains from 20 to 28% by weight of H.sub.2 SiF.sub.6.
