Abstract: Methods and apparatus for translating standard broadcast format color television signals to an encoding format for use in a transfer channel, and for retranslation of the signals to broadcast format. In one form of the invention, the broadcast format chroma signal is translated directly to transfer channel format without intermediate reduction to baseband. A second form of the invention achieves the same result by intermediate reduction to baseband of the chroma signal. The transfer channel format comprises chroma information amplitude modulated at a lower frequency than frequency modulated luma information, and enjoys exceptional independence from chroma cross-talk into luma in the restored broadcast signal as well as reduced cross-color distortion due to time base error in recording/playback transfer channels. An optional interlacing system provides even greater resistance to cross modulation effects.
Abstract: A macroporous crosslinked styrene resin, used as a carrier for covalently binding proteins, which resin contains isocyanate, thioisocyanate or aldehyde groups as protein-binding groups and may or may not contain sulfonic acid groups--which may also be in the form of the sodium salt or of sulfonic acid amide groups--as hydrophilic groups. The carrier according to the invention is prepared from a sulfochlorinated macroporous crosslinked styrene resin by reacting the sulfonic acid chloride groups with an .alpha.,.omega.-diamino compound, with hydrazine or with an .alpha., .omega.-diamino-diether, converting any sulfonic acid chloride groups which may still be present to free sulfonic acid groups, their sodium salt or a sulfonamide group, and then reacting the terminal amino groups with phosgene, thiophosgene or a diisocyanate in order to produce the binding groups, which in turn fix a biologically active protein by covalent bonds.

Abstract: There is disclosed a cellulosic material such as paper or paperboard surface-sized with an aqueous dispersion of a combination of degraded starch or a starch derivative and a branched-chain, water-dispersible polyester condensation product. Said polyester is derived from the reaction of a dicarboxylic reactant, a diol or polyoxyalkylene glycol, and a phosphorus acid reactant wherein said polyester has a carboxylic acid number of about 5 to about 15 and an average molecular weight of about 4,000 to about 11,000. Mixtures of said starch and said polyester when used to surface-size cellulosic materials impart water resistance thereto.
Abstract: Liquid detergent compositions which are free of phosphate builders and nitrosamine-forming triethanolamines are obtained by replacing the triethanolamine component previously used with approximately 9 to 15 percent of N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxypropyl)ethylene diamine or its equivalent.
Abstract: Lithium ribonate and lithium arabonate are novel compounds by means of which ribonic acid, required as an intermediate for the synthesis of riboflavin (vitamin B.sub.2), or its salts, can be prepared particularly advantageously. The great advantages of the synthesis of ribonic acid are that, surprisingly, mixtures of lithium ribonate and lithium arabonate in aqueous solution can be exceptionally successfully separated into their components be fractional crystallization, and that the desired lithium ribonate, which is the less soluble salt and crystallizes out first, can be isolated in a very pure form. The solution which remains and which in the main contains lithium arabonate can be inexpensively re-epimerized.
Abstract: A process for converting a crude, coarsely crystalline perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide of the formula ##STR1## where A is unsubstituted or substituted phenyl, an unsaturated 5-membered or 6-membered heterocyclic ring which contains one or two nitrogen atoms and may be fused to a benzene nucleus, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, or C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 -alkyl which is substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, phenyl or C-acylamino, to a pigmentary form, wherein the crude pigment, in aqueous suspension, is comminuted in a high-speed mill in the absence of a surfactant. The pigments obtained give pure shade colorations of high to extremely high hiding power, and have a high tinctorial strength in white reductions.
Abstract: Graft polyesters which are useful as adhesives and coatings and especially useful in processes for sizing spun and continuous filament synthetic organic and inorganic fibrous yarn. One embodiment of the invention is a textile size composition having free carboxyl groups which is prepared in situ on a textile yarn by the application of heat or radiation to a mixture of an unsaturated polyester reactant and a monovinyl monomer reactant comprising an acidic monovinyl monomer having at least one carboxyl group or mixtures thereof with any monovinyl monomer.
Abstract: 2-Methyl-5-(2-hydroxystyryl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole of the formula ##STR1## and processes for its preparation by condensing salicylaldehyde with 2,5-dimethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole or 2-methyl-5-(triphenylphosphine-methylene)-1,3,4-thiadiazole. 2-Methyl-5-(2-hydroxystyryl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a valuable intermediate for the preparation of pharmacologically active compounds; for example the alkylamino-hydroxypropyl ethers can, because of their .beta.-sympatholytic action, be used as drugs for the treatment of coronary diseases of the heart, cardiac arrhythmias and hypertonia.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a dimensionally stable one-component polyurethane foam from a storage-stable mixture, under pressure, of a prepolymer based on polyols and containing isocyanate groups and an organic blowing agent, with or without additives, by releasing the pressure and allowing the mixture to react with the atmosphere and cure, wherein the foamable mixture, which contains from 0.1 to 15% by weight, based on the weight of the prepolymer containing isocyanate groups, of a blowing agent is introduced into the inner container of a two-compartment pressure pack, which pack contains a pressure medium in the outer container, and is discharged, when required, through a dispensing device.
Abstract: The invention concerns laminates comprising a filled polyolefin layer and a thermoplastic decorative layer, a process for the preparation of these laminates and the use of the laminates for the production of moldings. Between the outer, polyolefin, layer and the decorative layer the novel laminates contain an adhesion-providing layer comprising a fiber-blend web or fabric containing two or more fusible types of fibers, of which one type welds to one of the outer layers to give a good bond, and another type welds to the other outer layer. If one outer layer of the laminate is a polyolefin, one of the fibers of the web can be polypropylene, and if the other outer layer is PVC, one of the fibers can be PVC. The preferred embodiment is a laminate of polypropylene and PVC, with the web or fabric consisting of polypropylene fibers and PVC fibers.
