Abstract: A process for crimping filaments by treating the filaments which are to be crimped, and are carried by a heated gas, in a first treatment chamber, and intermingling the heated filaments in an extended second treatment chamber, from which the gas carrier medium is drawn off through longitudinal slots radially to the direction of travel, wherein only sufficient gas is allowed to flow axially with the crimped filaments from the second treatment chamber that the travel of the crimped filaments is not impeded, while the bulk of the carrier gases is drawn off radially from the second treatment chamber. It is advantageous to draw off the carrier gas in the upper part, which comprises from about 25 to 75%, preferably from 40 to 60%, of the total length of the longitudinal slots of the second treatment chamber.

C and at a pressure of from 100 to 600 atmospheres, the improvement consisting in using as catalyst a rhodium complex which contains carbon monoxide, a tertiary organic phosphine or tertiary organic phosphite and a halogen atom as ligands. Aliphatic and cycloaliphatic dialdehydes or the acetals of the same are suitable for the production of the corresponding diols which may be used in the production of polymers and particularly of polyurethanes.
Abstract: Alkaline cleaning compositions are prepared by combining water, alkali metal hydroxide and certain surfactants which composition forms a gel when applied to a hot surface. These compositions are applied as a liquid to a hot surface to emulsify grease thereon. The surface is then allowed to cool sufficiently to cause the gelled composition thereon to revert to liquid form thereby facilitating its removal from the surface.

Sticking to mold faces is eliminated and strong moisture-resistant bonds can be obtained using as starting materials cellulosic materials such as wood chips containing the moisture present under normal manufacturing conditions of temperature and humidity.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of butenediol diacetates, especially but-2-ene-1,4-diol diacetate and but-1-ene-3,4-diol diacetate, by reacting butadiene with oxygen and acetic acid in the gas phase or liquid phase over a solid catalyst which contains platinum and at least one element of main group 5 or 6, as well as nickel.
Abstract: Novel 4-(m,m'-di-t-butyl-p-hydroxyphenyl)-butyl-2 diamides of aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids which are intermediates in the manufacture of dyes, pesticides and plastics auxiliaries, particularly stabilizers for polyolefins and polyamides. When molten, they form specific solvents for alkylphenols and are perfumes or form ingredients of perfume compositions having a fruity odor.

Abstract: There are disclosed a phosphorus-containing polyester and size compositions especially useful for sizing spun and continuous filament yarn produced from hydrophobic fibers and useful in protecting these fibers from abrasion during the weaving process. When the size is used alone or in mixtures with conventional size agents such as starches and polyvinyl alcohol, improved adhesion is obtained to hydrophobic fibers or blends thereof with cotton or other hydrophilic fibers. Polyester, polypropylene and polyamide and other fibers are effectively sized with the size compositions of the invention. The polyester consists of a branched chain phosphorus-containing polymer which is the reaction product of at least one dicarboxylic reactant, at least one diol or polyoxyalkylene glycol and a phosphorus acid reactant selected from the class consisting of phosphorus pentoxide, phosphoric acid and mixtures thereof.

Abstract: The manufacture of paper-like and textile-like sheet materials by the use of fibrids which have been obtained by dissolving poly(amide-imide) resins in an organic solvent, mixing the resulting solution with a liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymer and introducing the resulting solution into a liquid precipitation medium while exposing it to shearing forces. The present invention relates to the use, for the manufacture of paper-like and textile-like sheet materials, of novel fibrids, which have been obtained by dissolving poly(amide-imide) resins in an organic solvent, mixing the resulting solution with a liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymer and introducing the resulting solution into a liquid precipitation medium while exposing it to shearing forces.

Abstract: Polymers reactive towards free amino groups, such as polyamides, polyureas, polyurethanes or polyesters, are provided with durable modified properties by being brought into contact with an additive polymeric material which (a) is compatible with the polymer being treated, (b) contains a plurality of oxyalkylene groups effective to impart to the modified polymer improved properties such as reduced static propensity, modified dyeability, or greater water absorbency; and (c) has one or more reactive sites, in the form of a pendant free primary amino group or potential primary amino group, blocked by the dehydration of an aldehyde or a ketone with the amine, which in either case affords the capability in proper circumstances of attaching the modifying polymeric material to the polymer being treated by a covalent chemical bond.
Abstract: The invention concerns a process for making heat-resistant polyurethane elastomers from substantially linear polyhydroxyl compounds of high molecular weight, polyisocyanates, chain extenders, and, if desired, catalysts and additives, in which the polyhydroxyl compound is reacted with diisocyanate material in amounts to give an OH:NCO ratio of 1:1.10 to 1:2 and produce an adduct, and the adduct is subsequently reacted with symmetrical aromatic diisocyanate and a diol as chain extender (preferably a linear diol containing 2,4 or 6 carbon atoms) to obtain a crystalline or crystallizable diurethane or polyurethane of good heat resistance.
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a tape guide of large surface area for tape transport apparatus and to the tape guide manufactured thereby. In manufacturing the guide, a strip of material is elastically deformed, after which the deformation is maintained. One of the sides of the strip of material serves as guide surface for the magnetic tape. The strip can be located on the periphery of one or more bodies, if appropriate in a groove provided therein, and can be attached to the said bodies by suitable means, for example with the aid of integral hooks provided at the ends of the strip. The guide may be used for all types of tape transport apparatus. Since the guide of the invention offers extremely accurate tape guidance, it can be used particularly advantageously for magnetic tapes having a plurality of tracks and transported at a high speed, such as is usual, e.g., in video recording or in the recording of digital data.

Abstract: A method of compression testing resilient articles comprising the steps of cutting a sample to desired predetermined dimensions, placing the sample in a preflexing machine to provide preflexing at test specifications, and testing the preflexed sample in a sophisticated compression testing machine. The preflexing machine uses a fluid operated cylinder to move a pressure foot member into and out of the sample to compress same the desired number of times, at the desired rate of deflection and desired number of compressions at a fixed total proportion of compression. The machine is automated through a stepping switch driven in steps by a pulse operated drive mechanism which receives pulses from limit switches associated with the movement of the pressure foot. The stepping switch controls the cylinder through solenoids operating a switching valve means to alternately supply fluid pressure on each side of the piston in the cylinder.

Abstract: An oxyalkylated product useful for making polyurethane foams is prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide with a heated mixture of a phenol and a non-phenolic active hydrogen compound, at least one of which can be halogenated, in the presence of a catalyst complex of a phenol and an iron or aluminum substance. The mixture can also include a neutral phosphorus compound and/or acid anhydrides to enhance flame retardant properties. Optionally, also, the oxyalkylation reaction can be terminated by adding a tri (lower alkyl) amine and alkylene oxide to react with residual phenolic hydrogen in the mixture.
