Abstract: Shaped objects including synthetic polymeric fibers with improved antistatic properties are prepared by incorporation therein about 1 to about 15% of a polyester antistatic agent prepared by reacting an N,N-bis(hydroxyalkyl) taurine salt with an organic polycarboxylic acid. Incorporation of the polyester into a synthetic polymer is accomplished by the process of preparing a melt or solution of the synthetic polymer and the polyester and extruding from the melt or casting from the solution to provide films, fibers and other molded objects exhibiting antistatic properties. A process for the preparation of the polyester antistatic agents of the invention, and for the preparation of the N,N-bis(hydroxyalkyl) taurine salts is also disclosed.

Abstract: Tetrahydrofuran is prepared from a compound containing butanediol or capable of generating butanediol. The butanediol-donating compound is an ester of butanediol which is reacted with hydrolysis and etherification by passing it downwardly through a distillation column together with an acid catalyst and passing steam upwardly therethrough. The product which distills off is tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract: Ethylene polymers are manufactured in a tubular reactor under high pressure and at high temperatures in the presence of polymerization initiators. The polymerization is carried out in two different zones of the reactor, a mixture of ethylene, oxygen and regulator being fed into the first zone and a co-initiator having a half-life temperature, measured in benzene, of above 140.degree. C being additionally fed into the second zone. The co-initiator may be a peroxide or a hydroperoxide. The melt index, or the haze and gloss of a film produced from the resulting ethylene polymer, can be varied advantageously through the choice of the co-initiator.
