Abstract: A process for the manufacture of .beta.-bromoalkylsulfones and .beta.-bromoalkenylsulfones by addition reaction of sulfonic acid bromides with olefins or acetylenes in the presence of hydroperoxide and, optionally, of metal salts. Starting materials for further syntheses and for biologically active compounds may be obtained by subsequent dehydrobromination of the addition products.
Abstract: Polyether polyols may be synergistically stabilized against oxidation by incorporating therewith 4,4'-bis(alphadimethylbenzyl) diphenyl amine and a 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-(lower alkyl) phenol such as 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methyl phenol or 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-butyl phenol. The stabilized polyols inhibit color formation when employed in the preparation of polyurethane foams.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of wires and profiles, wherein thermoplastics are first mixed, in the melt, with from 5 to 40 per cent by weight (based on the mixture) of aluminum needles of length from 0.3 to 6 mm, of average diameter from 0.02 to 0.1 mm and of length to average diameter ratio of from 3 to 100, the mixture is extruded to give a wire or profile in which the aluminum needles are substantially oriented axially, and this wire or profile is finally hardened by cold-working.
Abstract: Condensates containing urea and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of from 1:2.5 to 1:4.5 are converted into wood glue by allowing the viscosity to increase at a pH of from 1 to 3 and at only slightly elevated temperature and then adding urea at a pH of 7 to 9.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of 2,6,6-trimethyl-cyclo-hex-2-en-1-one by reacting 3-alkoxy-4-methyl-3-pentene or 3-alkoxy-4-methyl-2-pentene or a mixture of these compounds with acrolein, and reacting the resulting 2-alkoxy-2-ethyl-3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran with acids. The product is an intermediate for numerous syntheses of scents. Furthermore, a number of carotenoid syntheses are based on 2,6,6-trimethyl-cyclohex-2-en-1-one or its hydrogenation product, 2,6,6-trimethyl-cyclohexan-1-one.

Abstract: A process for the quiet and smokeless flaring of process gases by sharp separation of the air intake and combustion steps. Compared with conventional off-gas flares, steam consumption is reduced and blow-back of the flame into the mixing tube is avoided by using a combined mixing and combustion chamber. This extends the operating range and life of flare facilities.

Abstract: Foams of mixtures of polyolefins and styrene polymers are produced by mixing the polymers with low-boiling expanding agents in the presence of a hydrogenated styrene/butadiene block polymer or a graft polymer of styrene on a polyolefin at temperatures above the softening point of the polymer mixture and under a pressure which prevents foaming of the mixture, followed by extrusion of the foamable mixture into a zone of lower pressure. The resulting foams are resistant to organic solvents.
Abstract: Coated magnetic recording media, especially video tapes and computer tapes, comprising a non-magnetic base carrying a magnetic coating which consists of a dispersion, essentially containing a finely divided magnetic pigment in an organic binder and at least one lubricant. A compound of the formula ##STR1## in which n is an integer of from 1 to 3 and R is alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or aralkyl, each of 3 to 18 carbon atoms, is used as a lubricant. The products have high abrasion resistance coupled with only little transfer of material to the magnetic heads even under fluctuating climatic conditions.

Abstract: Polyester polyols are prepared by the reaction of a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride with a polyhydric alcohol employing in an initial step a stoichiometric excess of polycarboxylic acid or anhydride, thereafter removing between 90 to 95% of the water of esterification, adjusting the stoichiometry of the reaction by addition of polyhydric alcohol, and continuing the esterification reaction until a polyester polyol having an acid number of less than two is obtained. The process allows for an increase in reactor capacity without equipment modification at the same cycle times and a decrease in side product formation.
Abstract: An improved tape transport apparatus of the type in which the supply and take-up reels are simultaneously driven by surface engagement of a capstan with the outermost layer of tape on each reel. The uniform tape tension required in a system of this type is produced and maintained by the combination of a braking force on the reel acting as the supply reel and of different biasing forces which cause different deformation of the capstan at the points of surface engagement of the supply and take-up reels with the capstan. A substantially constant tension profile is obtained by balancing the tension contributed by the two types of forces. A braking/biasing unit on each of the reel shafts provides both an undirectional braking force to resist the rotation of the shaft acting as the supply shaft and the biasing forces required to produce the unequal deformation.
