Abstract: Particulate olefin polymers are prepared by catalytic polymerization of monoolefins in an auxiliary liquid containing the monomers to be polymerized in dissolved form and the particulate polymer product in suspended form. The reaction mixture is recycled in a loop to which the starting materials are fed and from which the particulate polymer formed is removed. The essential features are (a) that a side stream is branched off from the loop, (b) that the side stream is caused to pass through a separating zone in which particulate olefin polymer is separated by centrifugal acceleration at temperatures and pressures in the same range as present in the loop and (c) that the separated particulate olefin polymer is discharged through flashing means.

Abstract: Textile materials are treated with an alkaline aqueous medium having a pH value of 7.5-11 and containing 0.25-4% by weight of a dissolved water soluble hydrophilic soil release polymer having carboxylic acid groups and 0.05-1% by weight of a dispersed hydrophobic soil repellent fluorochemical. The soil release polymer and the soil repellent fluorochemical are deposited on the surfaces of the textile fibers and the resulting textile material is dried to impart the desired nondurable soil release and soil repellency properties. The aqueous medium also may contain polyvinylpyrrolidone to further improve the finish. In a preferred variant, the textile material is first contacted with an alkaline aqueous solution of the soil release polymer, and thereafter with an alkaline aqueous medium containing the dispersed soil repellent fluorochemical to reduce the tendency of the deposited soil release polymer to cover the deposited soil repellent fluorochemical molecules.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for the encoding with synchronization information of video signals to be recorded and for subsequently decoding the signals in a synchronous manner. A standard broadcast format video signal is stripped of its sync signal and separated into its luminance and chrominance components. Additional sync or chroma identifying information for decoding purposes is added in the blanking period between each horizontal sync pulse and each subsequent picture signal information. The chrominance signals and added sync information are processed by a two-stage modulation network, added to the luminance signal and recorded. Upon playback, the encoded signal is decoded by a two-stage demodulation network which utilizes the added sync information to achieve synchronization.
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium consists of a non-magnetic base, on which the magnetic coating is a layer of a dispersion, containing a lubricant, of a magnetic pigment in a polymeric binder. The lubricant is a block copolymer which contains siloxane units and alkyleneoxy units of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, the alkyleneoxy units being bonded to the polysiloxane radical through a Si--O--C or Si--C group. The use of this lubricant gives a magnetic recording medium which has the advantages of good fluid lubrication and an excellent coefficient of friction which does not vary with time.

Abstract: Otto cycle engine fuels, for example gasoline, can be improved to such an extent by additives that no deposits or residues form in the carburetor or on the valves. In accordance with the invention esters, amides or imides of hydroaromatic polycarboxylic acids are added which are very effective in cleaning the carburetor and the valves.
Abstract: A device for manufacturing magnetic recording media in which the magnetic particles in the recording layer are oriented in a preferred direction, the fluid coating applied to the base being subjected to the action of a magnetic field produced in the air gaps between the spaced apart poles of two magnetic circuits, one on each side of the coated face, arranged symmetrically with respect to the plane of the coated base, the edges of the poles adjacent to the coated base terminating in screening elements shaped in such a way that the distance between the surfaces of the screening elements facing the coated base and the coated base itself increases as the screening elements extend away from the edges of the poles. A high degree of magnetic anisotropy in the recording layer can also be obtained when the magnetic circuits are at a relatively large distance from the still fluid magnetic coating.
