  • Patent number: 6717087
Abstract: Apparatus and method for monitoring the width of the transverse sealing web of a sealed, cut package unit in which products are packaged and which is transported further in a cyclic or continuous manner in the longitudinal direction. Two laser-optical sensors are arranged opposite one another above and below the cut package units. The measured values of the sensors, the said measured values corresponding to the distance from the package unit, are acquired at a speed-proportional clock frequency. A difference value is formed from the measured values of the two sensors which have been recorded in the same clock cycle, and an output signal is generated if the number of successive difference values which exceed or fall below a predetermined reference value falls below a predetermined critical value.

  • Patent number: 6713264
Abstract: The process is used for the screening of molecules from molecule libraries with regard to their individual binding behavior towards at least one given ligand. For this purpose the ligands labelled with a fluorescent dye are mixed with the molecule library which is in the form of a suspension. The mixture is plated out on a two-dimensional substrate (2) after the excess, unbound ligands have been washed out. Then the local fluorescence intensities on the substrate are electro-optically identified in a fluorescence microscope (5) and electronically discriminated in accordance with given selection criteria. The objects selected and localised in this way are then sequentially positioned exactly by a displacement, the coordinates of which are controlled by the image calculator, between the substrate (2) and a separation actuator (20, 21) and are spatially separated from the substrate (2) by the separation actuator (20, 21).

  • Publication number: 20040058870
Abstract: This invention provides novel peptides that function in vivo as agonists of the VPAC2 receptor. These insulin secretagogue polypeptides are shown to lower blood glucose in vivo more than controls upon glucose challenge. The polypeptides of this invention are also stable in formulation and have long half-lives. The peptides of the present invention provide a new therapy for patients with decreased endogenous insulin secretion, in particular type 2 diabetics. In particular, the invention is a polypeptide selected from a specific group of VPAC2-related polypeptides, or functional equivalents thereof. The invention is also directed to a method of treating a metabolic disease in a mammal comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of the insulin secretagogue peptides to said mammal. Also disclosed are methods of making the peptides, both recombinant and synthetic.
