  • Patent number: 8913887
Abstract: In a first aspect, the method and apparatus of the present disclosure can be used to periodically and/or intermittently place one or more ONUs attached to a PON in a power savings mode so that an OTDR test can be performed. While in the power savings mode, the ONUs temporarily suspend their transmitter function and power down their upstream lasers. In a second aspect, the method and apparatus of the present disclosure can be used to coordinate the performance of OTDR during one or more periodic or intermittent discovery slots used to detect and register ONUs recently connected to the PON. Because new ONUs are infrequently connected to the PON and ONUs already registered are not permitted to transmit during the discovery windows, OTDR can be performed during these windows without impacting, to a great degree, the normal operation of the PON.

  • Publication number: 20140365476
Abstract: A technique in which a tag associated with a target object is sent to a user device to provide information regarding the target object. The tag includes a rating indicator for a recipient of the tag to respond to the rating indicator, in which the rating indicator is used to request a rating of one or more characteristics related to the target object. The rating response is collected with verification information to determine a level of verification of the rating response, in which the verification may include reliability of the rater providing the rating response. The response and level of verification are used to rank the rating response and provide further filtering of the tag related to the target object.

  • Publication number: 20140365764
Abstract: A security architecture in which a security module is integrated in a client machine, wherein the client machine includes a local host that is untrusted. The security module performs encryption and decryption algorithms, authentication, and public key processing. The security module also includes separate key caches for key encryption keys and application keys. A security module can also interface a cryptographic accelerator through an application key cache. The security module can authorize a public key and an associated key server. That public key can subsequently be used to authorize additional key servers. Any of the authorized key servers can use their public keys to authorize the public keys of additional key servers. Secure authenticated communications can then transpire between the client and any of these key servers. Such a connection is created by a secure handshake process that takes place between the client and the key server.

  • Publication number: 20140365844
Abstract: A communication device (device) includes a processor configured to generate an initial ranging LDPC coded signal based on a first LDPC code and then transmits the initial ranging LDPC coded signal to another device (e.g., via a communication interface) for use by the other device for coarse power and timing adjustment. Then, the processor processes a received transmit opportunity signal to identify a transmit opportunity time period. The processor then generates a fine ranging LDPC coded signal based on a second LDPC code and transmits the fine ranging LDPC coded signal to the other device during the transit opportunity time period for use by the other device for fine power and timing adjustment. In some instances, the processor may be configured to generate one or more wideband probe signals for transmission to the other device in conjunction with or instead of the fine ranging LDPC coded signals.

  • Publication number: 20140362935
Abstract: A wireless communication device (‘device’) is configured to generate an OFDM/A packet that includes at least one OFDM/A symbol that includes at least one SIG having SIG information modulated on only even (or odd) sub-carriers and does not include any information modulated on odd (or even) sub-carriers of a set of OFDM/A sub-carriers. The set of OFDM/A sub-carriers may be all or less than all of available sub-carriers. The device may generate the packet to include a preamble and a payload such that the payload, which may be composed of at least one additional OFDM/A symbol, includes data modulated on some or all of the sub-carriers of the set of OFDM/A sub-carriers. The device can modulate and transmit SIG information and data differently within the preamble and the payload (e.g., with higher ordered modulation or MCS for the data and less power per sub-carrier than for the preamble).

  • Publication number: 20140365845
Abstract: A communication device is configured to communicate coded information to other communication device(s). The communication device uses NCPs to indicate locations of codewords within signal(s) transmitted to the other communication device(s). The communication device is configured to encode NCP(s) using an FEC code to generate coded NCP(s) and also to encode the NCP(s) using a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code to generate NCP CRC bits. The communication device is also configured to encode the NCP CRC bits using the FEC code to generate coded NCP CRC bits. The communication device is then configured to generate OFDM or OFDMA symbol(s) include the coded NCP(s) and the coded NCP CRC bits to indicate beginnings of codeword(s) within at least one of the OFDM symbol(s) and/or additional OFDM symbol(s). The communication device is also configured to transmit the OFDM or OFDMA symbols to another communication device via a communication interface of the communication device.
