  • Patent number: 8660178
Abstract: A video transmitter comprising a plurality of encoders may be operable to determine, for a transport stream, a constant overall number of bits per time interval corresponding to a frame in the transport stream. For each time interval corresponding to a start and an end of encoding of each of frames using each of the encoders, the video transmitter may allocate a target number of bits to each of the frames to achieve the constant overall number of bits. The allocation of the target number of bits may be based on frame types of the frames and CODEC types of the encoders, where the allocated target number of bits for each of the frames meets buffer overflow/underflow requirements associated with each of the encoders. A quantization parameter (QP) may be calculated and adjusted at each of one or more layers for generating an actual number of bits during encoding.

  • Patent number: 8661309
Abstract: In conventional Backplane Ethernet systems, data is transmitted over two pairs of copper traces in one direction using a PAM-2 scheme and a baud rate of 10.3125 GHz, giving an effective bit rate of 10.3125 Gbps. The rate at which data can be transmitted in Backplane Ethernet systems, while still being reliably received, is typically limited by ISI caused by the dispersive nature of the copper traces, frequency dependent transmission losses caused primarily by skin effect and dielectric loss of the copper traces, and cross-talk from adjacent communication lines. The present invention is directed to systems for overcoming these and other signal impairments to achieve speeds up to, and beyond, twice the conventional 10 Gbps limit associated with Backplane Ethernet systems.

  • Patent number: 8659987
Abstract: In one embodiment of a communications network, the predetermined encoding scheme and symbol constellation configurations are chosen so that the range in channel qualities that the encoding scheme and symbol constellation configurations are designed to be utilized within overlap with each other. This overlapping provides hysteresis, which reduces the frequency with which a subscriber must alter encoding scheme and symbol constellations. Reducing the frequency of changing encoding scheme and/or symbol constellation eliminates the communication overhead associated with these changes and increases throughput by enabling the subscriber to spend more time transmitting data.

  • Patent number: 8660135
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided that may reduce the number of false accepts by reducing the instances in which a mobile terminal mistakenly determines that control channel information is intended for the mobile terminal. The method, apparatus and computer program product may determine whether control channel information appears to be directed to a respective mobile terminal, determine whether one or more filler bits have respective predefined values and thereafter identify the information to not be intended for the respective mobile terminal in an instance in which the filler bits fail to have the predefined values. In an instance in which the control channel information provides an uplink grant, the method, apparatus and computer program product may cause data to be transmitted via an uplink established per the uplink grant only if the filler bits have the predefined values.
