Patent number: 8189538Abstract: A communication system is described. In one embodiment, the communication system comprises a mobile station having a transmitter to transmit packets wirelessly according to a protocol and multiple repeaters communicably coupled with the mobile station. Each of the plurality of repeaters receives one or more packets of the wirelessly transmitted packets from the mobile station. Each of the repeaters receives an indication of which of the wirelessly transmitted packets were received without errors by other repeaters and a received signal strength for those packets. The communication system also includes a switch coupled to the repeaters. Each of the repeaters forwards to the switch each packet of the wirelessly transmitted packets that each repeater had received without errors at a received signal strength higher than any other repeater.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2010Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Harry Bims

Patent number: 8189592Abstract: A telephony system and method is provided that reduces delay and provides better utilization of upstream bandwidth in delivering packet telephony services to a plurality of subscriber lines via a cable modem system. An exemplary system includes a plurality of voice processing modules, a host processor, and a buffer. Each voice processing module receives digital voice signals from a separate set of subscriber lines, compresses the digital voice signals to generate a voice packet, and transfers the voice packet to the buffer. The host processor then assembles a packet by concatenating the voice packets and transmits the assembled packet for delivery over a data network. Because the plurality of voice processing modules process the voice packets in parallel, delay is reduced in the assembly and transmission of the assembled packet.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2006Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Theodore F. Patent number: 8190440Abstract: A system and method for providing an augmented version of a Low-Complexity Sub-band Coder (LC-SBC) is described herein. In accordance with the method, a series of input audio samples representative of the frame are received. A series of sub-band samples is generated for each of a plurality of frequency sub-bands based on the input audio samples. A determination is made as to whether the frame is a voice frame or a noise frame. Responsive to a determination that the frame is a noise frame, an index representative of a previously-processed series of sub-band samples stored in a history buffer for at least one of the frequency sub-bands is encoded instead of encoding the series of sub-band samples generated for the frequency sub-band.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2009Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Laurent Pilati, Syavosh Zad-Issa

Patent number: 8189541Abstract: A mobile device coupled to a common system clock receives a signal comprising a primary synchronization sequence (PSS) and a secondary synchronization sequence (SSS) in a radio frame. Sample counts are generated for timed events based on corresponding operating bandwidths. The timed events are detected at modulo sample counts of the generated sample counts according to corresponding operating bandwidths. PSS symbol timing determined via the PSS synchronization is aligned to the generated sample counts based on corresponding operating bandwidth. The generated sample counts are bit-shifted relative to the aligned PSS symbol timing for other timed events based on corresponding operating bandwidths. The one or more timed events are determined via performing modulo counting after the bit-shifting. Timing operations are performed at the determined timed events and the determined one or more timed events are refined, accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2009Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Francis Swarts, Mark Kent

Patent number: 8190162Abstract: A single chip radio transceiver includes circuitry that enables detection of radar signals to enable the radio transceiver to halt communications in overlapping communication bands to avoid interference with the radar transmitting the radar pulses. The radio transceiver is operable to evaluate a number of most and second most common pulse interval values to determine whether a traditional radar signal is present. The radio transceiver also is operable to FM demodulate and incoming signal to determine whether a non-traditional radar signal such as a bin-5 radar signal is present. After FM demodulation, the signal is averaged wherein a substantially large value is produced for non-traditional radar signals and a value approximately equal to zero is produced for a communication signal that is not FM modulated with a continuously increasing frequency signal. Gain control is used to limit incoming signal magnitude to a specified range of magnitudes.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2006Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Christopher J.
