Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for polar modulating QAM signals with discontinuous phase may include amplifying a signal via a plurality of amplifiers such that a combined gain of the plurality of amplifiers comprises a coarse amplitude gain and an amplitude offset gain. A gain of one or more of the plurality of amplifiers may be adjusted to set the coarse amplitude gain, and a gain of one or more remaining ones of the plurality of amplifiers may be adjusted to set the amplitude offset gain. The setting of the coarse amplitude gain and/or said amplitude offset gain may be adjusted dynamically and/or adaptively. The signal may be generated by phase-modulation of a radio-frequency carrier. The combined gain of the plurality of amplifiers may be controlled based on a desired amplitude modulation. The plurality of amplifiers may be integrated within an integrated circuit (IC) or chip.

  • Patent number: 7860041
Abstract: A system and method for providing upstream adaptive modulation. Burst parameters associated with a range of data interval usage codes (IUCs) are defined. Each of the data IUCs has a different modulation order and forward error correction (FEC). The SNR and codeword error rate for each satellite modem in the network are monitored. The data IUCs are dynamically assigned to different satellite modems within an upstream channel based on SNR and/or codeword error rate to enable each of the satellite modems in the upstream channel to achieve maximum bandwidth efficiency during upstream data transmissions. Bandwidth requests are received from the satellite modems and granted. The grant includes the assigned data IUC. The data bursts received in the upstream channel are each processed using the parameters from the assigned IUC for each of the satellite modems sending data in the upstream channel.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention enable robust and quick parallel detection of the remote LPI request signal (rem_lpi_req) and SEND ZERO mode (SEND_Z) defined in the Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) standard. Embodiments do not rely on energy detection for detecting SEND_Z. Therefore, SEND_Z can be detected reliably and with minimal latency. In addition, since SEND_Z and rem_lpi_req are detected in parallel, embodiments are not concerned with the false detection of rem_lpi_req (before SEND_Z is detected) or the need to disable detection of rem_lpi_req (after SEND_Z is detected).

  • Publication number: 20100325545
Abstract: Replacing first sourced media with second sourced media based on first sourced media quality. A media processing device is operative to monitor the quality of first media and selectively to substitute second media in its place (in full or in part) based on a change in the quality of the first media. For example, in the context of first media received via broadcast (e.g., radio, satellite, streaming over the Internet, etc.), when a quality of the first media degrades, second media is substituted there for. The second media may be retrieved from a media storage device, or alternatively, it may be provided via another broadcast that has an acceptable quality level. The measure of quality of media may be characterized in accordance with any one or more parameters (e.g., change in signal to noise ratio (SNR), a discontinuity/gap, jitter, latency, etc.).

  • Publication number: 20100324911
Abstract: A system and method is described for updating the state of an audio decoder, such as a CVSD decoder, after a packet loss has occurred. In response to the loss of a packet, the system and method encodes audio samples produced by a packet loss concealment (PLC) algorithm and effectively passes the encoded audio samples through the audio decoder in lieu of the contents of the lost packet. This operation brings the state of the audio decoder into better synchronization with the state of a remote audio encoder, thereby reducing or minimizing the degrading effect of the packet loss on the perceived quality of an output audio signal produced by a voice processing system that includes the audio decoder.

Abstract: Systems and methods for binding a smartcard and a smartcard reader are provided. A smartcard is provision to store a first set of credentials for use in traditional transactions such as at a brick and mortar retail store and a second set of credentials for use when performing a transaction using a smartcard reader associated with a user such as an on-line transaction. The user smartcard reader registers with a smartcard issuer server by cryptographically authenticating a secure processor associated with the smartcard reader. As a result of the registration, the secure processor obtains a set of private keys associated with the second set of credentials. When a request for a authorizing a transaction via the user's smartcard reader is received, the smartcard reader cryptographically authenticates itself to the smartcard using a private key associated with a credential to be used to authorize the transaction.

Abstract: Media broadcast emulator. A media processing device is operative to create a live program type experience for a user. Various types of media are combined to emulate a live media broadcast. Different portions of various media types (e.g., real-time media, stored media, etc.) may be combined to generate a program that emulates a live program. First media can be analyzed to identify characteristics thereof (e.g., meta data associated therewith: (1) music media: song title, rating, artist name, album name, year, track number, genre, author, publisher, etc., (2) disk jockey/talk radio commentary media: speaker, date of first broadcast, station affiliate, broadcast locale, etc.). Based on these identified characteristics, second media related to the first media may be combined with the first media to generate an emulation of a live media broadcast. Alternatively, it is noted that any desired playlist may also be constructed by combining user-selected and/or related media as well.
