  • Publication number: 20080158076
Abstract: The effective bandwidth of a dynamically adjustable antenna with a narrow natural bandwidth delineated by a first frequency change can be moved from the natural bandwidth to another narrow bandwidth of interest within a wide band spectrum using a tuning circuit. The tuning circuit controllably changes an effective impedance of the antenna to tune the antenna to the bandwidth of interest. During operation, the signal strength of a received signal within the bandwidth of interest is measured, and the resulting signal strength measurements are used by a processor to adjust the tuning circuit, thereby tuning the antenna to a desired center frequency within the bandwidth of interest.

  • Publication number: 20080159424
Abstract: Angle estimation for modulated signal. A novel compensation technique is presented by which angle estimation may be performed for a modulated signal. More specifically, the angle between a constellation corresponding to a received signal and a constellation corresponding to a received signal may be very efficiently estimated using any one of the possible embodiments corresponding to various aspects of the invention. After this angle has been estimated, the received signal or the expected constellation may be rotated (or de-rotated) to compensate for this angular difference. In doing so, better estimates of the information bits that are demodulated and decoded from the received signal may be made.

Abstract: A disk drive controller includes a servo system operable to associate a time stamp with an arrival of a servo wedge, a firmware loop and core PLLs in the read channel. The firmware loop is operable to determine a period between the arrival of a pair of consecutive servo wedges and produce a desired frequency of when to read/write data to disk based on the period between the arrival of a pair of consecutive servo wedges. Processing circuitry is operable to adjust a clock signal, wherein the clock signal itself is not locked to the data and produce a fine control signal for the core PLLs in the read channel. • Publication number: 20080159140
Abstract: A method, system and computer program product for creating dynamic custom headers and for controlling flow rate of Downstream External Physical layer Interface (DEPI) packets are described herein. The method comprises concatenating or fragmenting a packet descriptor of a DEPU packet based on one or more of associated packet size, maximum transmission unit, packet type, channel configuration information and flow control mode. The method further comprises creating a header for the packet based on data in a programmable header template and storing the header in a header buffer, determining whether to transmit the packet based on one of a flow meter or a maximum transmission unit size and transmitting the packet by sending the packet descriptor to an output direct memory access (DMA) controller. A flow meter flow control mode determines if a packet is to be transmitted based on packet size, bucket size, a low threshold and a high threshold.

  • Publication number: 20080161022
Abstract: A method and system to determine when a wireless terminal has been paged by a servicing base station. An encoded paging burst is received on a paging channel and then decoded to produce a decoded paging burst. The decoded paging burst is processed to determine if it is a null page. When the encoded paging burst is a null page, it is processed to produce a null page pattern. The wireless terminal may then enter a sleep mode or reduced functionality mode for a predetermined period of time. The wireless terminal awakes from the sleep mode to receive additional encoded paging bursts. Processing the additional encoded paging bursts produces a processed encoded paging burst, which is compared to the null page pattern. When compared favorably, the encoded paging burst is considered a null page, allowing the wireless terminal to re-enter the sleep mode without fully decoding the paging burst.

  • Patent number: 7394869
Abstract: The present invention provides a radio transmitter having a digital modulator that further includes logic for continuous amplitude and continuous phase modulation switching in an RF transmitter intended to support both frequency shift keying (FSK) and phase shift keying (PSK) modulation techniques in a smooth and continuous manner that does not violate spectral mask requirements. The invention supports continuous modulation switching both ways, i.e., from FSK to PSK and from PSK to FSK. In operation, the radio transmitter initially operates in a first communication mode, transmitting communication signals to a remote agent according to a first modulation technique at a first data rate and then transitions to the second modulation type at a second data rate without spectral mask violation.

  • Patent number: 7394884
Abstract: To synchronize a regularly occurring pulse train to the average of a bunched pulse train, an oscillator generates a plurality of differently phase shifted signals at a given frequency. One of the phase shifted signals is selected as an output signal. The output signal is compared with the bunched pulse train. The selected phase shifted signal is changed responsive to the comparison so the output signal occurs at the average frequency of the bunched pulse train. The oscillator is formed as a plurality of differential amplifier stages having equal controllable delays. The stages are connected together to form a ring oscillator. The output signal is compared with the bunched pulse train through a FIFO. A signal representative of the state of the FIFO is used as an error signal to control the selection of the phase shifted signal to be used as the output signal.

  • Patent number: 7394796
Abstract: A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) infrastructure includes a wired backbone network, an air controller, and a plurality of wireless access points (WAPs). Each WAP includes a processor, a wired backbone interface, a first radio, a directional antenna, a second radio, and an antenna. The first radio and directional antenna service wireless terminals. The second radio and the antenna collect non-participatory WAP data. The first radio and directional antenna optionally collect participatory WAP data. Based upon the non-participatory WAP data (and optionally the participatory WAP data), the processor creates WAP operational reports and provides the WAPs operational reports to the air controller. The air controller creates directions based thereon and directs one or more of the WAPs to alter the gain pattern(s) of the directional antenna(s), alter the transmit power(s) of the first radio(s), and/or to alter the channel usage of the first radio(s).
