  • Patent number: 5832718
Abstract: A combustion chamber for a gas turbine using hydrogen as fuel, is equipped with an evaporator for liquid hydrogen which converts the hydrogen into its gaseous form that is fed directly or for instance via an external control valve into the combustor. The evaporator covers and protects at least a portion of the inner and/or outer wall that encloses the combustion chamber, whereby the evaporator also cools the combustion chamber while converting the liquid hydrogen to gaseous hydrogen.

  • Patent number: 5829517
Abstract: The invention provides a flow module comprising sandwiched plate elements, with at least one of each pair of adjacent plate element surfaces having a profiling which has a linear parallel construction so that a plurality of linear parallel flow ducts is formed between adjacent plate elements. These flow ducts can be charged with a first and a second fluid in an alternating manner by way of feeding and removal ducts formed by mutually aligned openings in the plate elements. To seal off the flow spaces and the feeding and removal ducts, seals are provided, and the openings for the feeding and removal ducts extend essentially across the whole end area of the profiling so that a distinct feeding and removal space is formed. According to the invention, for a mechanical stabilization several webs are arranged in the openings for the feeding and removal ducts in the profiled plate elements. These webs which are arranged in the inlet area or outlet area of the profiling end below the plate element surface.

  • Patent number: 5826826
Abstract: A landing process and arrangement for payloads from aerospace missions with a steerable gliding body deployable at high altitudes for accurately returning the payload to the earth surface wherein delicate and stressable elements of the payload are to be recovered. The gliding body is filled with a light gas during its deployment, and the aerostatic lift must be lower than the weight of the landing unit. The payload is divided into a body with delicate elements and a body with stressable elements, wherein the body with the stressable elements is suspended on a pulling element at a spaced location under the other body. After the lower body has come into contact with the ground, the upper body is maintained suspended aerostatically.

  • Patent number: 5826832
Abstract: The invention provides a device for unfolding solar panels 2, 3 for a spacecraft, which solar panels are connected with one another by an articulated axle 4, which in turn is connected with actuating devices for unfolding the panels by way of a tension device gearing provided with cable pulleys 11. An uncoupling mechanism, operative after unfolding of one panel 3, permits the articulated axle 4 to be separated from the tension device gearing. Upon swivelling of the unfolded panel 3 into an unfolded position, a pin 8, which is arranged in parallel to the articulated axle 4 engages in circumferentially extending grooves 12 and 12a. In this manner, the swivelled panel 3 can be guided to follow the solar altitude.

  • Patent number: 5823252
Abstract: A two-stage evaporator unit converts a liquid reactant mass flow adjustable as a function of a load presetting into a gaseous reactant mass flow. The liquid reactant mass flow is at least partially evaporated in the first stage by a heat-exchange medium, and, if appropriate is completely evaporated and subsequently superheated in the second stage. The evaporator unit is formed by the alternating stacking one on the other of foils having heat-exchange channels and by foils having reaction channels that, in each case, have at least one first and one second stage integrated in one foil. The first stage is configured as a channel with a minimized cross-sectional area which is directly connected to the inflow conduit. The first stage is operated at high coefficients of heat transmission. The total cross-section of the reaction channels in the second stage increases in the flow direction.

  • Patent number: 5819710
Abstract: A servo valve for an injection nozzle includes a housing having a valve chamber, a high-pressure opening, a connecting opening and a return opening. The valve chamber movably accommodates a valve member which can be displaced by actuating means to bear selectively against a first seat and a second seat. The valve member, when bearing against the first seat, closes the return opening and connects the high-pressure opening to the connecting opening. When bearing against the second seat it closes the high-pressure opening and connects the connecting opening to the return opening. The connecting opening is connected to a working chamber of the injection nozzle whose nozzle is closed when the working chamber is subjected to high pressure and opens upon a drop in pressure in the working chamber. The actuating means includes a component which varies in length when electrically actuated and which is connected to the valve member through the return opening by way of an actuating member.

  • Patent number: 5821149
Abstract: A method of fabricating an HBT using differential epitaxy. By using an emitter mask and an exside-inside spacer structure, a self-aligned fabrication of an emitter contact and a base contact is carried out. The emitter contact layer is made from amorphous silicon. Since the entire process sequence is very temperature-stable and can be carried out at lower implantation energies than conventional methods, HBT's having a high layer quality can be fabricated by the method of the invention which is suitable for mass production and with which high oscillation frequencies can be accomplished.

  • Patent number: 5817980
Abstract: A connector element is provided for variably laying and protecting insulated electrical conductors or cables for interconnecting the electrotechnical devices and lightning protective systems in aircraft and spacecraft. The connector element (29) includes a protective corrugated hose (25) connected to a screw-on component (1) by a collar nut (3) screwed onto the screw-on component (1). The collar nut (3) engages a flange (26A) on an end of the hose (25) and clamps it against the screw-on component (1). Insulated electrical conductors or cables (8) are guided through the hose (25), which is conductively connected to the aircraft structure. The hose (25) serves to protect, hold, and guide the electrical cables (8) in a desired configuration. The corrugated hose (25) includes a compressed portion (25A) with a small corrugation spacing, whereby the hose (25) is bendable into a desired configuration, yet is form-retaining and flexurally stiff to maintain the bent configuration.

  • Patent number: 5818356
Abstract: A method and a device for vehicle guidance as a function of the traffic situation is provided, during which vehicle guidance the traffic situation data are evaluated in a control center which has a computer. The control center computer determines the optimum route as a function of starting data, the traffic situation data and stored road network data in the form of sequences of intermediate destinations such that a vehicle-end navigation device is capable of reproducing successive sections of the optimum route and issuing the associated guidance instructions by using a traffic situation-independent route search method. This system permits a traffic situation-dependent vehicle guidance in which the more costly route optimization tasks are performed by the control center computer. The vehicle-end navigation computer only has to carry out traffic situation-independent route finding tasks.

  • Patent number: 5816534
Abstract: An arrangement for dividing an aircraft cabin that extends perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the cabin, includes a divider wall that is guided in a position adjustable manner in guide tracks that are arranged stationarily fixed along the aircraft cabin. The divider wall includes a plurality of individual divider elements. Each divider element is held slidably by corresponding support members in at least one guide track. Each guide track is arranged in the area of joints between cabin interior components. With this arrangement, running grooves, scratches, and lubricant smears on visible furnishings or fitting in the interior of the aircraft cabin can be avoided. The cost and effort for cleaning and maintaining the aircraft cabin are thus significantly reduced. The arrangement does not restrict the open or clear cross section of the cabin, particularly in the head room area, thereby reducing a source of danger to passengers.
