Abstract: A method of preparing neural precursor cells by exposing pluripotent stem cells or neural stem cells to a differentiation agent. The agent is a pyridine analog, which in preferred embodiments is a phenylethynyl-substituted or phenylazo-substituted pyridine. In other embodiments, a method of enhancing neural precursor cell survival is provided in which the survival is enhanced by exposure to the pyridine analog. In further embodiments, a method of preparing neuronal cells is provided in which pluripotent or neural stem cells exposed to the pyridine analog are then incubated without the pyridine analog, resulting in differentiation into neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. These methods may be used in toxicological screens, e.g., to evaluate the neurotoxicity of a test compound.

Abstract: A floorplanning method for an analog integrated circuit layout is disclosed. A first-type block is defined as a movable and deformable block with rectangle constraint, and a second-type block is defined as a fixed-size block without rectangle constraint. Each block in the floorplan is classified to the first-type or the second-type block. In a shape determination stage, a target shape is determined among candidates of the first-type block, the first-type block accordingly being modified to the target shape, resulting in at least one overlap in the floorplan. In an overlap elimination stage, neighboring blocks of each said overlap are analyzed, the overlap being then eliminated by utilizing surrounding space, resulting in unused space in the floorplan. In an enlargement stage, the unused space is utilized for enlarging the first-type block.

Abstract: The present invention introduces a new technique allowing the fabrication of high-aspect ratio nanoscale semiconductor structures and local device modifications using FIB technology. The unwanted semiconductor sputtering in the beam tail region prevented by a thin slow-sputter-rate layer which responds much slower and mostly to the high-intensity ion beam center, thus acting as a saturated absorber funnel-like mask for the semiconductor. The protective layer can be deposited locally using FIB, thus enabling this technique for local device modifications, which is impossible using existing technology. Furthermore, such protective layers allow much higher resolution and nanoscale milling can be achieved with very high aspect ratios, e.g. Ti layer results in aspect ratio higher than 10 versus bare semiconductor milling ratio of about 3.
