Abstract: The brake energy balancing system balances brake torque of braking wheels of a vehicle having a plurality of cars carried by trucks, for applying and controlling the brakes of each group of braking wheels of the trucks of the vehicle. Brake torque is measured, a command brake torque signal is generated that is limited by a reference torque signal, and the command brake torque signal is compared with the measured brake torque to generate brake torque difference signals. An energy balancing brake application control signal is provided to the brakes in response to the brake torque difference signals.
Abstract: An improved thread profile for use in medical implants utilizes a negative o slightly positive load flank inclination to minimize radial separation of the threaded connection by increasing the radial force required to overcome the surface and interference resistance to relative motion between the made-up abutting load faces of the connector threads.

Abstract: An inflatable packer used in a well and having a mandrel carrying upper and lower heads, a normally retracted inflatable packer element including an inner elastomer bladder and an outer expansible armor or carcass, the ends of the packer element being anchored to respective heads, and in one embodiment a hydraulically operable system that applies restraining force to the heads which controls the shape and deployment of the packer element during inflation and prevents entrapment of fluid bubbles outside the element and the formation of Z-folds in the bladder. In other embodiments the restraining force is supplied by a stack of disc springs, by frictional engagement between parts, by a shearing action of materials, by swaging a sleeve member, and by axially crushing a sleeve member.

Abstract: A threaded connection for use in medical implant surgery which utilizes a read profile which includes a load flank, a stab flank, a root intermediate the stab flank and load flank, and a crest intermediate the load flank and stab flank. The distance, measured paraxially, which the screw moves one complete revolution of the connection, is the lead of the thread. In the invention, the lead varies for either the male or female member of the connector such that the load flank, effectively, is moved away from axial interference with the cooperative member as the thread is "made up" or engaged. Accordingly, the load flank interface along the length of the connection is stressed, rather than having the load flank interface stressed predominately at the end turns of the thread, as often occurs under loading of the thread. In this manner, the stress loading of the thread is spread over the multiple turns of the thread, and pre-load is not lost by the yielding of the end turn.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for scrambling an original analog video signal samples predetermined portions of the original video signal at a first rate and stores the sampled portions of the original video signal within a memory device. The stored video signal is read out of the memory device at a second rate, which is less than the first rate, to produce a time expanded scrambled video signal. A predetermined code is inserted into the time expanded scrambled video signal which is then converted into an analog scrambled video signal and transmitted through a channel. A method and apparatus for descrambling the scrambled video signal to produce a reconstructed video signal samples the scrambled video signal at the second rate, stores the sampled scrambled video signal into a memory and reads the sampled scrambled video signal out of the memory at the first rate.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is an interferometric-based materials analysis system (10) that employs a novel combination of laser beam shaping and pointing techniques, the use of a low cost, rugged, and compact diode laser (22) as a detection laser, and the use of signal processing techniques that compensate for inherent instabilities and short-term drift in the diode laser. A matched filter processing technique is disclosed for processing interferometrically-obtained data points from a target being analyzed. The matched filter technique is shown to be especially useful for detecting and analyzing Lamb modes within thin targets, such as a silicon wafer undergoing a rapid thermal processing cycle. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for interferometrically monitoring a target to determine, in accordance with predetermined criteria, an occurrence of a period of time that is optimum for obtaining a data point.

Abstract: An adjustable conveyor bucket for soap or the like. The adjustable bucket includes a first bucket wall, a second bucket wall, a base, a pillar extending through the second bucket wall and the base, and adjusting pins extending from the second bucket wall and received within apertures in the base. The pillar is downwardly spring biased and the width of the container is adjusted by raising the second bucket wall and moving it in a direction transverse to the bucket wall so that the locator pins are received within a second set of apertures spaced transversely from the first set.

Abstract: A hairspray composition is described that includes a nonionic polymer and an anionic polymer. The nonionic polymer is formed from monomers having at least one unneutralized carboxylic acid. The anionic polymer is identical to the nonionic one, except that all of the carboxylic acid groups are in salt form. Advantageously, the composition further includes an acrylic resin, most especially an amphoteric one. Best results are achieved when the acrylic resin is neutralized with a relatively small cation such as potassium and a second cation of a water soluble fatty amine. These compositions employ water as the carrier and dimethyl ether as propellant.
