Abstract: This invention relates to a method for the prevention of monocyte adherence to the endothelial cells lining blood vessels, their subsequent invasion of surrounding tissues and diseases related thereto. It comprises inducing a monocyte adhesion protein to the surface of endothelial cells by treatment with specific cytokines, preparing a monoclonal antibody to the monocyte adhesion protein and contacting the antibody to the protein to form a complex. The monoclonal antibody does not bind to the cell surface proteins VCAM or ELAM. The complex results in a decrease in the adherence of monocytes to endothelial cells and thereby attenuates or prevents the harmful effects of monocyte invasion of endothelial cells and surrounding tissues.

Abstract: A fabric treatment composition contains at least a detergent active material, a fabric softening agent and 0.5 to 3% a nonionic substituted cellulose ether derivative which has an HLB of 3.1 to 4.3 and a gel point of less than 58.degree. C., which improve softening performances on cotton while controlling deposition on synthetic fabrics. Ethyl, hydroxyethyl or methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose ethers are preferred. The detergent active material is anionic or a mixture thereof with other detergent active materials and may be present at 2 to 50% of the composition. The softening agent may be soap, a cationic material, a fatty amine and/or a clay with a soap/cationic mixture being preferred, and may be present at 0.5 to 50% of the composition.

Abstract: A combination of an engine block heater and electrical coupling includes the conventional cylindrical insert which slides into a sleeve on the mounting member for the block heater. An additional spring clip member is provided to hold the electrical coupling in place. The spring clip member has a collar surrounding a rib on the connector body and a pair of spring arms extending at right angles to the collar along a sleeve of the coupling to snap behind a rib on the sleeve. The spring clip arms are connected to the collar at an outer edge thereof with a pair of lobes of increased diameter between the spring clip arms for pushing of the collar longitudinally. A central opening of the collar engages over the connector body with a pair of inwardly projecting portions which slide along slots to a groove at the rib on the connector body.
Abstract: A dairy case confection and a process of producing a frozen dairy case confection by mixing together a solid or semi-solid aerated composition comprising protein and ice crystals and particles having a hydrophilic core encapsulated in a hydrophobic coating at a temperature wherein there is substantially no melting of the ice crystals.

Abstract: A flow restriction detector for a nozzle assembly of a liquid dispensing machine is capable of detecting a blocked or partially blocked nozzle during the cleaning of the nozzle assembly. During nozzle cleaning, a return plate is attached to the nozzle plate of the nozzle assembly to receive a flow of pressurized fluid from the nozzles. Both the inlet and return fluid lines are provided with pressure sensors, and the return line has a constant back pressure applied to it so that the differential between the inlet and return line pressure sensors is in the range 5-10 psi. The pressure differential is monitored during cleaning and from one cleaning to the next for the purpose of identifying a blocked or partially blocked nozzle. A change of as little as 5% from the pressure differential value established for an unblocked system may indicate a partial blockage of a nozzle.

Abstract: A method is provided for monitoring the progress of nucleic acid amplifications that rely on a nucleic acid polymerase having 5'.fwdarw.3' exonuclease activity. An important feature of the method is providing an oligonucleotide probe having a reporter molecule and a quencher molecule at either end such that the quencher molecule substantially quenches any fluorescence from the reporter whenever the oligonucleotide probe is in a single stranded state and such that the reporter is substantially unquenched whenever the oligonucleotide probe is in a double stranded state hybridized to a target polynucleotide.
Abstract: Perfluoroindane is used as a gas transport agent in animals without causing gas or vapor pulmonary embolism. Emulsions containing perfluoroindane as the oxygen carrying component are made and infused into an animal and the perfluoroindane escapes at a very rapid rate from the animal body. The perfluoroindane-containing liquids or emulsions are considered valuable for angioplasty and as a blood substitute.

Abstract: A process for the production of a detergent composition having a predetermined relative humidity comprising forming a crude detergent composition having a relative humidity in excess of the predetermined level, for example in excess of 30% and contacting the said crude composition with a preconditioned gas having a relative humidity below the predetermined relative humidity wherein the temperature of the crude composition is maintained below the temperature at which the crude composition agglomerates thereby to form a low relative humidity detergent composition.
