  • Patent number: 5115457
Abstract: The amount by weight of TiO2 per gallon of paint in a paint sample is determined by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The sample is prepared by weighing a portion of the sample while wet and then drying the sample. The dried sample is then calcined to produce an ash residue, which is weighed. The ash residue is then ground and heated to drive off any remaining moisture before being fused with a flux material into a glass bead. The amount of TiO2 in the fused glass bead is determined by an X-ray fluorescence instrument which has been previously calibrated with similar fused glass beads having known amounts of TiO2. The quantitative result of the X-ray fluorescence determination is then extrapolated back to determine the pounds of TiO2 per gallon of paint.

  • Patent number: 5114658
Abstract: Melt fabrication, without precompounding, of a composition comprising a thermoplastic resin, an acid containing ethylene copolymer and a polymeric grafting agent, is provided by (1) bringing the molten components of the composition together for the first time, (2) intermittently shearing the components, preferably in an injection molding machine or a blow molding machine having a screw with a shearing section, and (3) intermittently fabricating in one-step the sheared molten composition into articles of pre-determined shape. The thermoplastic resin is less than 50 volume percent and is at least one continuous phase in the composition. The process is improved by increasing back pressure on the screw used in the injection molding machine, to extend the screw rotation and shear time.

  • Patent number: 5115080
Abstract: This invention relates to thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester compositions containing recurring units derived from 2-methylhydroquinone, terephthalic acid, 2,6-napthalenecarboxylic acid, and hydroquinone, characterized as having a heat distortion temperature of greater than 200.degree. C. and improved elongation. The inclusion of a reinforcing/filling agent selected from the group consisting of glass reinforcing agents, glass fillers, carbon metasilicate, calcium carbonate, talc, titanium dioxide, and calcined aluminum silicate in said compositions, and also in those same compositions lacking recurring units of hydroquinone, results in an improvement in the elongation of said compositions. The inclusion of carbon fiber into these compositions results in no significant decrease in the elongation of said compositions. The compositions are useful as films, fibers, and shaped articles.

  • Patent number: 5111727
Abstract: A digital sampling instrument for multi-channel interpolative playback of digital audio data stored in a waveform memory provides improved interpolation of musical sounds by using seven or eight surrounding points. The present invention may be efficiently implemented in a single VLSI circuit of low cost. The present invention allows a high channel count, providing many musical notes which can be played simultaneously, allowing them to be conveniently enveloped and mixed for performance in mono or stereo. The present invention allows timbral changes to the notes being played providing a musician with musical responsiveness. Also, the present invention accesses a waveform memory in an enhanced manner to allow improved performance parity between computational units and memory. Also, the present invention includes techniques which dramatically reduce the amount of memory required to store the musical waveforms while still maintaining adequate bandwidth and fidelity in the output.
