Abstract: The amount by weight of TiO2 per gallon of paint in a paint sample is determined by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The sample is prepared by weighing a portion of the sample while wet and then drying the sample. The dried sample is then calcined to produce an ash residue, which is weighed. The ash residue is then ground and heated to drive off any remaining moisture before being fused with a flux material into a glass bead. The amount of TiO2 in the fused glass bead is determined by an X-ray fluorescence instrument which has been previously calibrated with similar fused glass beads having known amounts of TiO2. The quantitative result of the X-ray fluorescence determination is then extrapolated back to determine the pounds of TiO2 per gallon of paint.

Abstract: An weft yarn gripping device in a shuttleless loom in which the spring-loaded lever for pressing the gripping foot onto the relative rigid gripping surface cooperates with a travel stop block which absorbs part of the load exerted by said spring. The block is connected to the foot by a leaf spring rigid with the lever, and the leaf spring is inserted into a slot in a connection block which is rigid with said foot. Various mechanisms are also provided for varying the load transmitted to the gripping foot.

Abstract: Melt fabrication, without precompounding, of a composition comprising a thermoplastic resin, an acid containing ethylene copolymer and a polymeric grafting agent, is provided by (1) bringing the molten components of the composition together for the first time, (2) intermittently shearing the components, preferably in an injection molding machine or a blow molding machine having a screw with a shearing section, and (3) intermittently fabricating in one-step the sheared molten composition into articles of pre-determined shape. The thermoplastic resin is less than 50 volume percent and is at least one continuous phase in the composition. The process is improved by increasing back pressure on the screw used in the injection molding machine, to extend the screw rotation and shear time.
Abstract: A method of extracting cellular components, e.g., nucleic acids, particularly DNA, from biological, expecially solid tissue, samples, particularly from plants is provided, whereby all of the steps can be performed in one vessel, and the entire process can be automated. A vessel suitable for this process is provided, as well as a system for the automated performance of the process steps.
Abstract: Electrical connecting device having a housing with connecting means for at least one conductor and being provided with means to be coupled to another electrical device. The housing is provided with colored identification means provided in at least one recess in the housing. The colored identification means can be introduced in this recess.
Abstract: Colored, high strength, high modulus p-aramid fibers are prepared by including an organic pigment which is soluble in but not degraded by concentrated sulfuric acid in a p-aramid spinning dope wherein the solvent is concentrated sulfuric acid and spinning the pigment containing dope through an air gap into a coagulation bath and washing and drying the resulting fibers. The dissolved pigment is precipitated by the coagulation bath as particles with a diameter of less than 0.50 microns.
Abstract: A protective casing (1) for optical instruments, particularly for video cameras, having a tubular casing shell (2) with a sealed front wall (3) added to the respective end, a backwall (4), an instrument support (11) placed within the casing shell and rigidly connected to the backwall, and a casing support (9) placed outside the casing shell for the attachment of the protective casing (1) on a stationary support (12). The electrical connections pass through the backwall (4), and the casing shell can be removed from the backwall of the instrument support (11). In order to facilitate the assembly, the instrument support (11) has a U-shaped section forming a trough open on the top with two parallel side walls and a crossbar connecting both sidewalls, and the inner side of the side walls are equipped with several grooves located parallel to the casing axis in order to allow the insertion of at least one instrument support plate at adjustable heights.
Abstract: A conductive coating composition containing a binder and pigment in a pigment to binder weight ratio of about 15:100 to 100:100; wherein the binder contains(A) a multifunctional amine, a polyamide resin, polyamidoamine resin or any mixtures thereof; and(B) a multifunctional epoxy resin;wherein the electrically conductive pigment is a silica which is either amorphous silica, a silica containing material or a silica coated pigment, the silica is in association with a two-dimensional network of antimony-containing tin oxide crystallites in which the antimony content ranges from about 1-30% by weight of the tin oxide and the composition forms a coating on a substrate that has a surface conductivity of at least 100 Ransburg units. The coating can be used on metal or plastic substrates or previously coated substrates of either plastic or metal to render the substrate conductive and easily grounded for electrostatic spraying.
Abstract: This invention relates to thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester compositions containing recurring units derived from 2-methylhydroquinone, terephthalic acid, 2,6-napthalenecarboxylic acid, and hydroquinone, characterized as having a heat distortion temperature of greater than 200.degree. C. and improved elongation. The inclusion of a reinforcing/filling agent selected from the group consisting of glass reinforcing agents, glass fillers, carbon metasilicate, calcium carbonate, talc, titanium dioxide, and calcined aluminum silicate in said compositions, and also in those same compositions lacking recurring units of hydroquinone, results in an improvement in the elongation of said compositions. The inclusion of carbon fiber into these compositions results in no significant decrease in the elongation of said compositions. The compositions are useful as films, fibers, and shaped articles.
Abstract: Semi-crystalline blow moldable polyester compositions formed by melt blending a polyester, an ethylene copolymer containing epoxide groups, a methyl methacrylate copolymer containing epoxide groups, an ionomer obtained by neutralizing with Na+ or K+ and optionally another polyester.
Abstract: A blend of an ethylene-alpha olefin linear copolymer having a density of about 0.890 to about 0.914, a tubular low-density polyethylene, and optionally a copolymer of ethylene with at least one copolymerized vinyl alkanoate, alkyl acrylate, or alkyl methacrylate and a linear low density polyethylene provides a shrink film particularly useful for packaging e.g. fish or poultry.
Abstract: Tough, high melt flow, low molecular weight polyamide compositions containing toughening polymers are obtained by blending conventional polyamides with the toughening polymer and then mixing the blend with very low molecular weight polyamides which are capable of reacting with the conventional polyamide by transamidation.
Abstract: Excess terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid is reacted with a phosgene/DMF complex nearly to completion in one or more stages to form terephthaloyl chloride or isophthaloyl chloride; in another stage, by-product formylbenzoyl chloride is oxidized and terephthaloyl chloride or isophthaloyl chloride containing less than 100 ppm of formylbenzoyl chloride and/or dichlorotoluoylchloride is recovered.
Abstract: A digital sampling instrument for multi-channel interpolative playback of digital audio data stored in a waveform memory provides improved interpolation of musical sounds by using seven or eight surrounding points. The present invention may be efficiently implemented in a single VLSI circuit of low cost. The present invention allows a high channel count, providing many musical notes which can be played simultaneously, allowing them to be conveniently enveloped and mixed for performance in mono or stereo. The present invention allows timbral changes to the notes being played providing a musician with musical responsiveness. Also, the present invention accesses a waveform memory in an enhanced manner to allow improved performance parity between computational units and memory. Also, the present invention includes techniques which dramatically reduce the amount of memory required to store the musical waveforms while still maintaining adequate bandwidth and fidelity in the output.

The combinations contain one photosensitizer, known as the sensitizer, and a second photosensitizer, known as the co-sensitizer. The co-sensitizer has an absorbance maximum at a longer wavelength than the sensitizer and is generally present a much lower concentration than the sensitizer.
