Abstract: Small diameter fibers formed from the use of laser energy and gaseous reactants and are disclosed. Also disclosed is an apparatus and method for the formation of continuous, substrate free, crystalline or amorphous fibers. Materials which can be formed into small diameter fibers include boron, silicon, germanium, zinc, tungsten, cadium, gallium, thenium, and compounds and mixtures thereof. The fibers have a diameter of about 10 micrometers to about 170 micrometers. The apparatus for producing the fibers includes a laser, a reaction chamber, and gas supply means. The laser beam has a focal point adjusted to coincide with the tip of the growing fiber, the focal point of the laser creating a region of elevated temperature at the fiber tip.
Abstract: It has now been found that a unique combination of additives makes semi-crystalline polyamides readily processible by extrusion blowmolding to make hollow, stiff parts of various shapes. The compositions consist essentially of a semicrystalline polyamide, a selected ionomeric toughening agent, and an anhydride-rich ethylene copolymer.
Abstract: A multi-level table including an upper section and a lower section providing superposed tabletop surfaces and a plurality of upstanding support posts connected between the upper and lower sections utilizes mounting members interposed between the ends of the support posts and the upper and lower sections to which the support posts ends are connected. The upper and lower sections each include appropriately-sized recesses for accepting the cup-shaped section of a mounting member and a through-opening associated with the recess so that when the cup-shaped section is accepted by the recess, the protuberance of the mounting member is accepted by the through-opening.

Abstract: Grinding with known grinders such as corner, belt or vibratory grinders poses insoluble problems, such as the grinding of inner edges set at an angle to each other for example in retainer strips of window and door glasses. A portable grinder has thus been developed in which the grinding or sanding tool (3, 20, 30) effects an oscillatory movement which, unlike in the state of the art, is effected around a fixed axis of the apparatus (29) with a minimum pivoting angle, preferably between 0.5.degree. and with a high pivoting frequency of between ten thousand and twenty five thousand vibrations per minute. This different oscillation movement makes it possible to provide the grinding or sending tool with almost any shape. Furthermore, grinding does not inevitably have to be made with the transverse surface of the tool (3), in particular the perpendicular surface, in relation to the diametrical axis (29) but it is also possible to use a surface which is almost parallel to the first or is even arched.

Abstract: An electrical energy source is created by the combination of a light emitting polymer material having at least one light emitting surface emitting light energy of a specified frequency bandwidth and a photovoltaic cell having a light collecting surface and a pair of electrical contacts. The light collecting surface of the photovoltaic cell is optically coupled with the light emitting surface of the light emitting polymer material. An open-circuit voltage is generated between the pair of electrical contacts as a result of the absorption of emitted light energy from the light emitting polymer material by the photovoltaic cell. The light emitting polymer comprises a mixture of a polymer labelled with a tritium and an organic compound which emits light energy when subjected to radiation generated by the tritium. The organic compound is at least partly bonded to the polymer and the mixture is translucent at the specified frequency bandwidth of the light energy.
Abstract: According to this invention, there is provided an atmospheric pressure plasma surface treatment process comprising the steps of introducing a gas in a plasma reaction apparatus having a pair of dielectric-covered electrodes having opposing surfaces on at least one of which is provided with a solid dielectric; performing plasma excitation under atmospheric pressure; and surface treating an object placed between the opposing electrodes, wherein the gas introduced is a gaseous composition consisting essentially of argon, helium and/or ketone. This process makes it possible to quickly imparting hydrophilic nature to surfaces of an object made of a plastic to be treated. The hydrophilic nature given lasts long.

Abstract: Concrete forms utilizing a concrete form liner including a two-sided fabric having a different range of pore sizes on one side compared to the opposite side. In one embodiment, a microporous coating, such as an ethylene-vinyl chloride microfoam dispersion, is placed on one side of a porous fabric to controllably reduce the pore size of the fabric on that side to between 0.2 to 20 microns. The coated fabric is used in combination with a support and a grid to form a concrete casting system wherein the coated side of the fabric is placed directly in contact with the concrete. The microporous coating stabilizes the surface fibers of the fabric thereby reducing the tendency of the fibers to stick to the concrete. The pore size of the coated side of the fabric must be small enough to substantially keep all concrete particles from passing through the fabric, but sufficiently open to permit the passage of water and air.
