Abstract: A modular artificial reef effective to prevent shoreline erosion is constructed of reef-forming modules placed in side-by-side relation and coupled together to prevent relative movement therebetween. The modules, preferably having a triangular prismatic shape, include a gently sloping seaward face, a beachward face and a base which rests on the sea bottom. The modules are configured to deflect currents, approaching from the sea, away from the beachward face. This configuration prevents currents from flowing at high velocity along the beachward face and toward the beachward toe. Accordingly, scouring of the seabed adjacent to the beachward toe of the artificial reef is minimized or eliminated.

Abstract: A process is provided for preparing a 3-alkenylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate which is an intermediate for preparing an inhibitor of the enzyme squalene synthetase which is useful as an inhibitor of cholesterol biosynthesis, or which bisphosphonate itself is useful as an inhibitor of cholesterol biosynthesis. The process involves the palladium catalyzed coupling of an allylic ester with a tetraester of a methylenebisphosphonate to form a 3-alkenylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate containing an alkene moiety located .gamma., .delta. to the phosphonates.

Abstract: The recognition method is applied to visual telephony image coding. Matrices of digital samples relevant to the individual frames of the video transmission are submitted to a first processing whereby the foreground region containing the figure is identified. The information concerning the elements of such a region is then processed by edge recognition algorithms to detect a group of elements possibly belonging to the contour. The group of elements is analyzed to select a sequence of elements distributed on the average along a line. The sequency of elements is processed by a neural network to build up the continuous contour which is then coded.

Abstract: Base-resistant peroxide-curable fluoroelastomers with improved processibility comprising a polymeric chain having tetrafluroethylene as one comonomer copolymerized with monomer units selected from the group (a) propylene, (b) propylene and vinylidene fluoride and (c) a C.sub.2-3 hydrocarbon olefin and one or more perfluoro(alkyl vinyl ethers); said polymer chains having terminal iodo-groups.
Abstract: A highly efficient refrigerant purification device for removing moisture, oil, particulates, non-condensible impurities and other contaminants from a refrigerant, thereby allowing maximum recovery of the refrigerant in a refrigeration system, the refrigerant being in full compliance with regulatory standards. The device can be easily adapted to purify a wide variety of refrigerants, and the device is organized in a logical arrangement which utilizes a minimum number of parts.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of producing flexible polyurethane foam having reduced discoloration which utilizes low molecular weight alkanes or mixtures thereof as auxiliary blowing agents. More particularly, the present invention relates to the use of auxiliary blowing agents which are linear or branched alkanes having boiling points above -50.degree. C. and below 100.degree. C.

Abstract: A container comprising an inner container, inner lid, outer container and outer lid which is suitable for commercial transport and legible display of required label information, and can be readily grasped and handled such that the lid and contents can be safely and completely removed. The invention further relates to a plurality of such containers, each container having a different maximum capacity but a label area of at least the same size as the label area of the smallest container and the same distance from the bottom of the container such that application of the labels to the containers can be performed by automated means. These containers are useful, in particular, for storing and transporting hazardous materials such as thick film paste materials.

Abstract: Process for preparing superconductive fiber from a dispersion of a particulate precursor of a superconductive oxide in a solution of an organic polymer in an organic solvent. The process includes the steps of forming a spinnable dispersion of the precursor in the solution, extruding the dispersion into fiber, and firing the fiber at a temperature of at least 950.degree. C. to form superconductive fiber.
Abstract: A closure element for use in circular ducts for controlling the flow of material in the duct. The element has a unique unitary shape which allows installation within the confines of the duct with minimum distortion of the duct cross-section when the valve is open. This results in a very low pressure drop through the valve. Because the closure element geometry is such that the element pivots from the duct wall solely within the confines of the duct, the valve is well suited as a check valve.
Abstract: Novel cementitious containers for storage of hazardous waste are disclosed having an inner layer of substantially unhydrated cement in contact with the hazardous waste and an outer layer of hydrated cement. Cementitious hazardous waste containers may be prepared by compressing powdered hydraulic cement around solid hazardous waste materials and then hydrating an outer layer of the powdered hydraulic cement. An inner layer of powdered hydraulic cement remains unhydrated and capable of reacting with any water which might breach the outer layer or originate with the hazardous waste itself. The inner layer of powdered hydraulic cement is also capable of reacting with any carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide generated by decomposition of organic waste materials.
