Abstract: A melt-spinning process for spinning polymeric filaments at a spinning speed controlled by a positive mechanical withdrawal means that increases the speed of the filaments to above 7,000 meters/minute whereby a drawing and necking down of the filaments occur below the spinning pack, directing a gas into a zone extending from the spinning pack to a location between the spinning pack and the withdrawal means, maintaining the zone under superatmospheric pressure of less than 0.03 kg/cm2 and increasing the velocity of the gas as it leaves the zone to a level greater than the velocity of the filaments to reduce the extent of necking down of the filaments.
Abstract: An apparatus for increasing the collisions of nuclear particles in a "migma" type device. This device employs ring magnets to reflect ions of energies coming from the ring axis back to the ring axis on orbits that precess around the axis. In this manner collisions can be made to occur at rates which are high enough to yield useful quantities of energy or other desired products.
Abstract: Azeotropic mixtures of 3-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoropropane (HCFC-253fb) with methanol, ethanol, or trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (t-HCC-1130) are useful in solvent cleaning applications.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for parameterizing an input signal as a sum of N unrelated sine waves of various amplitudes, frequencies and phases using a 2N-order difference equation to describe the sine wave sum and converting the problem to a solution of the roots of an N-order polynomial.
Abstract: An air distribution outlet device is provided having an elongated barrel with an inlet at the top end and a closure at the bottom end. A longitudinally extending wall portion of this barrel is formed with a multiplicity of orifices around the entire periphery for a predetermined axial length thereby permitting transverse outflow of air from the barrel. A flow-control deflector valve is disposed in this intermediate perforated portion of the barrel intermediate the extremes of the axial length of the perforations thereof and this valve is selectively adjustable between a position which is substantially blocking air flow therebelow to a position substantially unrestrictive to the flow of air through the entire perforated portion. This deflector valve may be selectively positioned at any position between the extremes thereby permitting control of the air flow in an upward or downward direction as desired as it is being diffused transversely through the perforations in the barrel.
Abstract: Modifying a polyester with special chain-brancher residues in carefully controlled amounts to provide a draw-texturing feed yarn that can be draw-textured at a speed of 1,000 mpm without excessive filament breaks, and with other advantages in the resulting textured yarns, such as improved bulk and dyeability over prior polyester yarns that could not be satisfactorily textured under similar conditions.
Abstract: This invention concerns a new process for the catalytic carbonylation of certain aryl halides or aryl tosylates to amides by use of a complex of palladium and at least one ligand. More specifically, the invention concerns carbonylation of halogenoaromaticsulfonamides or tosylatoaromaticsulfonamides to saccharin, saccharin analogues or their salts.
Abstract: An improved curing agent for use in coatings, laminates, moldings, castings and adhesives comprising the use of an amine-borane adduct along with a mixture of an anhydride polymer or copolymer having at least two anhydride groups and an epoxy polymer or copolymer having at least two epoxy groups. Also provided is an improved process for the preparation of tertiary amine borane curing agents.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for performing Fourier transformations on an input stream of digital data without switches in the cross channel communication paths. A new systolic method for performing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is derived from a constant geometry method using phase shifting of data in a channel to obtain the proper data sequence, rather than switches to transfer data among channels. A standard global shuffle operator is decomposed into phase shift operators and random access memory shuffle operators that operate only in one channel. The result is further simplified by merging the phase shift operators with twiddle factors from the constant geometry method. The communications paths for the data are thereby fixed, creating the opportunity for higher radix operations than are available with devices employing switches for cross channel data transfer.
Abstract: A process for brazing a metallized component to a metallized ceramic-based substrate comprising the steps of:(a) applying a second conductor composition over the metallizations on the substrate such that the metallizations are covered by said second conductor composition which consists essentially of a metal powder and an organic medium;(b) drying said second conductor composition;(c) firing said second conductor composition at a temperature sufficient to sinter the metal powder of the second conductor composition and drive off said organic medium thereby forming a second metallization layer;(d) forming an assembly by positioning at least one metallized component on said second metallization layer and a brazing composition at the component-second metallization layer interface; and(e) heating said assembly at a temperature sufficient for said brazing composition to form a joint between said component and said second metallization layer.

Abstract: A terminal connector or plug protector is selectively configurable for coupling or coupling and protecting an electronic communication circuit to a communication line. The plug protector has a housing and a circuit board which is received in the housing. The circuit board has thereon a circuit which includes a plurality of circuit elements removably received in the circuit board. The circuit is coupled to the communication circuit and to the communication line with the circuit elements coupled therebetween. The circuit elements are selected from among a plurality of circuit element types, i.e., jumper wires, solid state voltage suppressors, and fuses, to configure the plug protector for the selected coupling or coupling and protecting.
Abstract: A process for improving the permselectivity of an aromatic polyimide gas separation membrane comprising contacting the membrane with a solution of a surfactant in a solvent which swells the membrane but in which the membrane material is soluble to an extent of no more than 3% under the conditions used to contact the membrane.
Abstract: Lanosterols substituted in the 14 and/or 15 position(s) which are active in inhibiting lanosta-8,24-dien-3.beta.-ol 14.alpha.-methyl-demethylase activity, suppressing 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR) activity, decreasing cholesterol synthesis and reducing serum cholesterol levels are disclosed.

Abstract: In tools for clipping material of different hardness and dimensions, there are required blade-portions (1, 2) having different characterics. A pliers jaw, the blade-portion of which is formed with different edge angles (a.alpha..sub.1, .alpha..sub.2), different edge radii and different widths (b, B) on its outer chamfer surface (5) results in a tool which is usable for different materials. By configuring different cutting areas (6, 7) by distinctly machining the jaw, the right cutting area can easily be localized for the material in question that is to be cut.

Abstract: An automatic yarn cutting apparatus comprising a cutter body, actuating means, valve means, and cutting means whereby the cutting mechanism is actuated by tensioned yarn passing over the actuator arm and through the cutting slot.
Abstract: An apparatus for testing the operativeness of a Hall effect device (HED), such as in an automotive application, without requiring removal of the HED for testing. The apparatus includes a connector for connection to the HED, a connector for connection to a voltage supply, and an indicator. A permanent magnet is physically positioned with respect to the HED so that a properly functioning HED would produce a Hall effect current within a predetermined range. A ferrous metal strip is provided, shiftable between an interference position between the permanent magnet and the HED and a clear position not between the permanent magnet and the HED. The indicator is connected so as to be lit when the HED is producing a current within the predetermined range, and not lit when the HED is not producing a current within the predetermined range. Also disclosed is a method for testing the operativeness of a HED. The method includes supplying a testing apparatus as described above.
