Abstract: An optical switch for switching light from one leg of an optical circuit to another leg is characterized by an arrangement for altering the index of refraction of one of the legs with respect to the other leg. This results in a disparity in light velocity and a change in phase relationship for the light being propagated through the legs. When the legs are brought into a coupling region, there occurs a predetermined transfer of light from one leg to the other, depending upon the magnitude of the alteration in phase relationship between the light propagated in the legs.

Abstract: A filler composition that is suitable for use in the manufacture of paper, board, wet-laid non-wovens or other fibrous sheet materials comprises (preferably flocculated) filler particles (e.g. mineral fillers such as clay, talc or calcium carbonate) attached to fibres (e.g. synthetic organic fibres such as polyester or aramid fibres) by means of a coupling agent. These fibres generally have an average fibre length of 4 mm or more. Suitable coupling agents include oligomeric and other polymeric materials such as modified starch, cellulose ethers and derivatives thereof, modified natural gums, ketene dimers or poly(vinyl alcohol). Colloidal silica or colloidal bentonite clay may also be included. The filler composition is preferably added to the stock before the latter reaches the flowbox of the sheet-making machine. The invention allows high levels of filler to be achieved while maintaining satisfactory strength properties, in particular tear strength, in the sheet.

Abstract: A low-cost, high performance 1.times.N fiber optic coupler where N>16 is presented. The coupler has a GRIN lens having an first optic fiber aligned with the optical axis of the lens at one end of the lens. The first optic fiber ends in a microlens. At the other end of the GRIN lens a bundle of tapered second optic fibers is centered on the optical axis of the lens.
Abstract: Water-based pesticide compositions are disclosed that are effective to kill molluscs, insects, and small rodents. The compositions are resistant to washing away by water, yet retain moisture such that the texture of the composition is such that pests find it palatable even after extended periods of time have passed after application. The compositions are environmentally safe and do not pose a significant toxicological threat to humans and pets.

Abstract: Metal residues are extracted from poly(ether ketone ketones) with aliphatic alpha-hydroxycarboxylic acids or aromatic ortho-hydroxycarboxylic acids in a liquid phase, either neat or in an aqueous or a nonaqueous solution. Extraction of metal residues, which usually derive from the catalysts used in the preparation of poly(ether ketone ketones), improves both the color and the thermal stability of these polymers.

Abstract: Rotor of a magnetomotive device has a discrete permanent magnetic and a ferromagnetic core injection molded within a synthetic plastic body in the form of a flywheel. The core is of integral, laminar construction and includes hub and counterweight portions and a pair of radially extending, circumferentially spaced arm portion. At their outer ends, the arm portions terminate in pole shoes with opposed, undercut edges to retain the discrete permanent magnet therebetween. Each of the arm portions has a laterally extending shoulder portion and, at their inner ends, connect to the hub by narrow neck or stem portions which are resiliently flexible. From the center of rotation of the rotor, the stem portions are each disposed along a given radius.
