Abstract: A silica glass optical fiber is subjected to an external strain which causes vitreous matrix atoms to stabilize in a lower energy condition. In this way inhomogeneity domain sizes and as a consequence the attenuation due to Rayleigh scattering, depending on such inhomogeneity, are reduced.

Abstract: A modulator for controlling high-speed rotary dobbies of the type which control the dobby main shaft's motion by transmitting power from a drive shaft through pivotable rocker supports rotatably driven by the drive shaft and engaging conjugate cams so that the drive shaft's uniform rotary motion is converted into non-uniform motion of the dobby main shaft. This is caused by the conjugate cams, which cause the rocker supports to pivot. The rocker supports are mounted so as to accommodate this rocking. The two rocker supports are connected to the dobby main shaft by two connecting rods hinged by pins on one of the rocker supports and on an appendix of the main shaft respectively, these connecting rods being disposed antisymmetrically to each other in accordance with a particular geometry.

Abstract: Capacitor charge ignition system includes a computer chip programmed to control ignition timing of the system. The system has a generator coil and primary and secondary windings of an ignition coil disposed on one leg portion of a ferromagnetic core. The generator coil is wound with respect to ground potential to provide positive pulses, one preceding and one following, in sequence, an intermediate pulse of negative polarity induced in the generator coil in response to rotation of permanent magnet poles past the one core leg. The positive pulses are supplied to a microprocessor which is programmed to determine the elapsed time between the pair of positive pulses and to provide an output signal which is a multiple function of the elapsed time. A capacitor is charged by the intermediate pulse so that its grounded side is changed to a positive polarity voltage which is connected in circuit with the primary winding of the ignition coil and with the anode/cathode path of a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR).
Abstract: Described is a stable pharmaceutical composition of 3-(hydroxymethyl-5,5-diphenylhydantoin disodium phosphate ester, the prodrug of 5,5-diphenylhydantoin (phenytoin) a commonly used drug for the treatment and management of epilepsy and other types of convulsive states. It has been found that degradation of the prodrug to phenytoin can be controlled by controlling the pH of the composition. Controlling the pH to between 8.3 to 9.4 results in the production of diphenylglycinamide as the primary degradant and minimization of degradation to phenytoin. If the pH is maintained at a lower or higher value, then the degradation pattern changes, with earlier than expected product failure.

Abstract: A significant improvement of stain-resistance is obtained by commercial application of stain-blocker to nylon carpet that is installed, as opposed to immersing or otherwise treating the primary carpet or treating the precursor nylon polymer or fibers earlier during a manufacturing process. There are various methods of application and of increasing stain-resistance of installed carpets.

Abstract: This invention relates to a process for preparing a reverse image using a pigmented peel-apart element containing a photoinhibitor. More particularly this invention relates to a process for preparing a negative or reverse surprint proof using peel-apart photosensitive elements comprising a strippable cover sheet; a photoadherent layer containing a colorant and a photoinhibitor compound; a tacky, essentially nonphotosensitive contiguous layer; and a support.
Abstract: The present invention relates to new compounds of the formula ##STR1## where X is ##STR2## alkylene, or --S-- where R.sub.1 is hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl; W is hydrogen, hydroxy, amino, alkyloxy, aryloxy, O-alkyl, or O-aralkyl; (Y).sub.A) is --CH.sub.2 NR.sub.2 R.sub.3 where R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 may be hydrogen, substituted alkyls, aryls, or together with N form a 5 to 7 membered heterocyclic group; and Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl. These compounds are useful in the treatment of various cardiac arrhythmias.
Abstract: A process for regioselectively preparing phosphorylated cyclitols, in particular phosphorylated inositols such as myo-inositol 1,4,5-tris(phosphate) and myo-inositol 1,3,4,5-tetrakis(phosphate). Novel cyclitols produced by means of this process are also described.
Abstract: The process for separating the proteinaceous materials from nucleic acids involves contacting a solution containing the proteinaceous materials and nucleic acids with a solid phase extraction material capable of binding proteins to form bound and unbound fractions and then isolating the unbound fraction containing the nucleic acids.
Abstract: An alignment device is provided for an artificial limb and comprises first and second end plates fastenable to respective upper and lower parts of the limb in a predetermined angular and axial position. A flexible sleeve fastened between the end plates forms therewith an internal cavity for containing a body of settable fluid. When the fluid body is in a flowable state relative movement between upper and lower parts of the limb during alignment thereof are accommodated by flexion of the sleeve. When the fluid body is in a solidified state it establishes a rigid mechanical linkage between the end plates, thereby preventing relative movement of the upper and lower parts. Angular alignment between an end plate and an adjoining part of the limb is provided by pegs on one of said parts engaging sockets on the other of said parts.

Abstract: The present invention relates to compliant sections utilized on contact elements which are mounted in plated-through holes in printed circuit boards, generally in conjunction with a plastic header and other electrical connectors. More particularly, the invention disclosed comprises a compliant section which includes a first deformable member and a second deformable member defining a substantially tear drop shaped space therebetween such that when the compliant section is press fit into an appropriately sized hole the members flex together forming a tapered shape.
Abstract: A high speed short stroke saw for cutting plaster casts, bone and the like, is constructed to operate with minimal noise from the mechanism. The motor driven rotary shaft and the oscillating saw blade shaft are mounted in bearing support structures in a casing. The rotary motion of the motor shaft is translated to the oscillating motor of the saw blade by a bearing mounted cam that fits within a drive rod and receives the motor shaft. The drive rod is connected to a bearing mounted crank which receives the saw blade shaft. This entire mechanism is sealed in oil.

Abstract: A method for preshrinking tubular knit fabrics in which the fabric is treated as a continuous length in tubular form. The elongated tube is continuously fed lengthwise into a series of liquid baths which include a wetting agent, scouring and washing constituents and rinses and any finish is to be applied to the fabric. The fabric tube is caused to advance into and through the bath in a substantially tensionless state by pushing the fabric into the flow of liquid and through the bath to avoid applying substantial tension. From the washing and rinsing baths, the saturated fabric is flattened, again without application of substantial tension, and is fed through a two-stage dryer. In the initial stage, the fabric is air-dried to a moisture content of substantially less than 40%. Before introducing the fabric into the second stage of the dryer, the moisture content is raised, for example in a steam atmosphere, to substantially 40%.

Abstract: In a system for air-jet texturing yarn a yarn treating jet is modified to locate a baffle at the outlet end of the jet. The baffle is positioned a fixed distance above the central axis of the jet and away from the outlet end of the jet such that the yarn and air follow the lower surface of the baffle to a point where the yarn leaves the baffle to increase windup tension and provide a highly coherent textured yarn.
