Abstract: A self-service check-out counter for cashier-unattended use and operation includes an laser scanner for automated reading of product identification codes borne by articles to be purchased, a keyboard for manual entry of article-identifying information, a variety of indicators and signalling devices for instructing actions by the customer, devices for preventing pilferage, fraud and inadvertent errors and an integral bag forming apparatus for manufacturing custom-formed bags on-site at the counter and on demand and, preferably, custom-sized to conform to the volume of articles to be packed in the bags. A customer individually scans articles to be purchased and the scanned data is verified through comparison with stored product identifying information. Following verification of each article, customer placement of the article into the bag forming apparatus in enabled and a bag preferably conforming to the volume of articles purchased in manufactured within the check-out counter.
Abstract: An improved overhead covering device is provided for transportable open top cargo compartments of rectangular configuration. The covering device consists of a flexible cover, the underside of which has a number of parallel reinforcing slats adapted to slidably engage channels associated with the side walls of the cargo compartment. A drum, driven by a motor, enables the cover to be wound up for storage within a housing. The same motor pulls a cable which travels about a pulley wheel at the end of the cargo compartment and deploys the cover from the housing.
Abstract: A two-way connector comprisinga lens, light direction setting means for sending light from a light-transmitting member from one side to the other side of the lens as a light beam parallel to the optical axis,an optical fiber for light transmission and reception having a light transmitting and receiving end on a focal point on one side of the lens,an optical fiber for light reception having a light incoming end and a light outgoing end for conducting light gathered at a position deviated from the focal point of the lens on one side to a light receiving member, anda mirror disposed on the other side of the lens for receiving the light from the optical fiber via the lens and reflecting it to the incoming end of the light-receiving optical fiber via the lens.

Abstract: An agricultural machine for smoothing ruts, such as are produced in a field by center pivot sprinkler irrigation systems, comprises a pair of rotary tillers arranged in a unique frame for traveling over and along respectively opposite sides of the rut as such tillers are rotated toward each other to break up clods of soil ridged above the rut at opposite sides thereof and to largely fill and smooth the rut. A guide shoe carried by the frame midway between the rotary tillers is preferably provided to travel along the rut and maintain the rotary tillers at proper working positions, and a hood with outriggered side walls hinged thereto for outward swinging movement preferably covers the rotary tillers.

Abstract: This invention relates to a method for detecting whether contaminants are on or have migrated into the body of a plastic reusable food or beverage container. The invention uses a sensor attached to the inside of the container which changes optical density when it is exposed to certain contaminants. The change in optical density is detected by illuminating the sensor with ultraviolet light and then measuring the effect that the sensor has on the ultraviolet light.

Abstract: A single-filament specimen preparation fixture for preparing a multiplicity of tensile testing specimens from the same filament. The fixture can be used manually or it can be adapted for use as one element in an automatic testing system.
Abstract: A method is provided for inhibiting leukotriene biosynthesis and thus treating asthma, psoriasis or inflammation by oral administration of p-aminophenols having the structure ##STR1## wherein m is 0 to 5; X is CH or N; R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may be the same or different and are H, lower alkyl, aryl, hydroxy, hydroxyalkyleneoxy, alkylthio, alkoxy, alkanoyloxy, aryloxy, halo, carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl or amido; R.sup.3 is H, lower alkyl, alkanoyl or aroyl; and R.sup.4 is H, lower alkyl, benzoyl or alkanoyl, and including acid-addition salts thereof, with the proviso that when R.sup.4 is benzoyl, R.sup.2 is other than H.
Abstract: The life of a salcomine catalyst used in the oxidation of phenols to quinones (e.g., of o-phenylphenol to phenyl-p-benzoquinone) is increased by the presence of a water- or acid-removing substance, e.g., a non-acid-forming chemical water scavenger, a molecular sieve, a weak inorganic base, or a sterically hindered organic base, in the reaction medium. Suitable water- or acid-removing substances include carbodiimides, e.g., dicyclohexylcarbodiimide; a Type 3A or 4A molecular sieve; finely divided metal oxides or metal carbonates, e.g., barium carbonate; and 2,6-lutidine. These substances chemically transform by-product carboxylic acids, and/or prevent the formation of such acids, whereby the life of the salcomine catalyst is prolonged.
Abstract: A wellhead for a polished rod pumping unit to provide emergency closure of the bore through the wellhead in the event of breakage of the polished rod. The valve assembly includes a flapper valve mounted on a swivel pin for movement between a vertical open position and a horizontal closed position across the wellhead bore. The flapper valve is spring biased toward the open position. A well pressure responsive cylinder and piston assembly is mounted on the side of the wellhead with an operating rod into the wellhead against the flapper valve to move the valve from the open position to a horizontal closed position. The piston is exposed to well pressure on the one side urging the piston outwardly to the valve open position and a spring engages the piston on the opposite side biasing the piston inwardly toward the valve closed position when well pressure is not sufficient to keep the spring compressed. One form of the wellhead includes a packing assembly for sealing around the polished rod.
Abstract: A modified fine powder polytetrafluoroethylene, and the process for preparing the polymer, in which the modifying copolymerizable monomer is a selected dioxole monomer. The composition is dispersion-process-produced and includes a core portion having a copolymer comprising repeat units provided by tetrafluoroethylene monomer and dioxole monomer, and a shell portion that is substantially free of dioxole units. The core and shell portions may contain perfluoro (n-propylvinyl) ether. The composition is useful for paste extrusion, such as in wire coating and tubing applications.
