  • Patent number: 4908628
Abstract: A radar apparatus transmits a pulse and receives a corresponding return within the duration of the transmitted pulse. The returned pulse and a proportion of the energy of the transmitted pulse are mixed in a mixer to produce a demodulated pulse of duration equal to the overlap in time of the transmitted and received pulses. In order to render the apparatus insensitive to close targets a video gate prevents the portion of the demodulated pulse corresponding to e.g. 0 to 1/4 full range passing to a processing circuit. The processing circuit forms the ratio of the amplitudes of two frequency components of the spectrum of the demodulated pulse as a measure of range (FIG. 3) or forms the mean amplitude of the demodulated pulse weighted according to a weighting function (FIG. 4).

  • Patent number: 4908197
Abstract: Methods are described for preparing aluminum nitride of controllable morphology for ceramic and heat conduction applications. The methods comprise forming spherical particles or flakes of an intermediate, RA1NH, followed by heating the spheres or flakes of RA1NH at elevated temperatures to produce high purity aluminum nitride of corresponding morphology. Spheres of RA1NH are formed by (i) freezing a suspension of RA1NH in a liquid medium and thawing, by (ii) aging the suspension, or by (iii) dissolving RA1NH in a liquid medium and precipitating it. Flakes are formed by freezing a suspension of RAINH in a liquid medium and removing frozen medium from the frozen suspension.

Abstract: Gradient optical density transmissive light directing devices (24, 26, 28, 30) and fabrication thereof are disclosed herein. Example of such devices include concentrators, lenses and compound lenses. The present invention teaches a process for the fabrication of glass light transmitting devices having a chosen gradient in index of refraction either bidirectionally (radially and longitudinally relative to an optical axis) or in three dimensions. The present invention further describes the design of several interesting optical devices by particular choices of the gradient in the index of refraction thereof. Such articles have numerous uses in the optics, optical fiber and solar technology industries for the purposes of designing compound lens systems using a single, integral lens, coupling light into fibers and for concentrating and directing light from a source having a significant angular variation to an energy collecting and/or conversion devices such as a photovoltaic cell, to name but a few applications.

  • Patent number: 4907737
Abstract: Electronic control system for a gas-fired/hot air furnace includes a primary control unit which controls the flow of fuel to the furnace. The furnace has heating and cooling space thermostats and a comfort fan to supply heated or cooled air to the space being monitored by the thermostats and an induced draft blower which supplies combustion air into the furnace for heating. A first switch and associated relay drive selectively energizes the comfort fan for low speed heating operation and a second relay switch and associated relay drive selectively energizes the comfort fan for high speed cooling operation. Actuation of the heating thermostat energizes a third switch and associated relay drive which energizes the induced draft blower. A high temperature thermostat located to sense excessive furnace temperatures is also connected to actuate the third relay to energize the induced draft blower in an excessive temperature condition.

  • Patent number: 4906520
Abstract: A fabric, useful as a primary carpet backing, woven in both the warp and weft directions from filmy elements in the form of longitudinally-oriented, splittable ribbons formed from a blend of a major amount of polyester and a minor amount of a polyolefin. The ribbons split longitudinally when punctured by a tufting needle, thus providing for a more secure grip on the tufted carpet yarn than that given by conventional polyester backings. The use of polyester as a principal component overcomes certain drawbacks of polypropylene backings. Alternative processes for making these fabrics, each involving a heat-treating step at a temperature of at least 150.degree. F. (66.degree. C.) for a sufficient period of time to render the ribbons splittable, are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4906177
Abstract: Electronic control system for an oil burner has a primary direct current power source controlled by a thermostat and a secondary direct current power source independent of the thermostat. A first relay is in circuit with the oil burner motor to energize the same and a second relay is in series with the first and with an alternating voltage source for energizing the ignitor of the furnace. An electronic circuit controls the first relay switch and includes a pair of silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR's) connected in series for energizing the first relay. A second electronic circuit includes a pair of interconnected NPN transistors for controlling the operation of the second relay switch. The first NPN transistor is conductive when the second relay switch is energized and the second NPN transistor is connected to the first to turn "OFF" the same in response to flame being sensed in the furnace.

  • Patent number: 4905420
Abstract: In order to improve a grinder comprising a grinding tool which is oscillatingly driven through a small pivot angle about a pivot axis fixed on the grinder and which has a grinding surface with at least one corner region, with at least one suction channel extending throughout the grinding tool from an aspirating port to an exhaust port located on a side facing away from the grinding surface, so as to obtain an effective, reliable and, in particular, subsequently attachable dust exhaust system which is designed as simply as possible and does not impair handling of the grinder, it is suggested that the exhaust port be arranged outside of the corner region and that an exhaust hood which can be immovably fixed on the grinder be provided so as to cover the exhaust port in all pivoted positions and allow the corner region of the grinding tool to protrude in an uncovered manner.

  • Patent number: 4906939
Abstract: Test fixtures, each being adapted to receive a capacitor, are connected through a relay network to a time variable high voltage source. Predetermined relays are energized in a predetermined sequence to connect a given capacitor to the source. A high voltage signal having a predetermined waveform is applied to the capacitor associated with an energized relay. When the current through the given capacitor exceeds a threshold, the voltage value then being applied to the capacitor determines the breakdown voltage of the capacitor.

  • Patent number: 4907278
Abstract: This connected-speech recognition system uses a two-level hierarchical system, in which the higher-level (master) processor and one or more lower-level units (slaves) process, respectively, the most probably word sequence within a permitted grammar network, and the likelihood of individual words with the grammar network. The lower-level processing performs dynamic programming involving vector and matrix calculation and comparison, and processing speed is improved by an integrated processing unit which has simultaneous access to the external data memory as well as to a high-speed internal microinstruction ROM. One of the aforementioned units can also provide for performing an additional internal test function. The structure features two internal data buses and internal memories for more commonly used data and addresses, for enabling high-speed microinstruction performance and external memory access.
