Abstract: A process for manufacturing 1,4-bis(4-phenoxybenzoyl)benzene, wehrein diphenyl ether is contacted for about 30-360 minutes at 130.degree.-200.degree. C. with 1,4-benzenedicarbonyl chloride in respective mole ratios of about 15-80:1 in the presence of a fluorocarbon resin carrying pendant sulfonic acid groups, the weight ratio of the resin to 1,4-benzenedicarbonyl chloride being 3:1-1:2; the hot solution is separated from the resin, and the crystalline product is recovered from the solution on cooling. The so obtained 1,4-bis(4-phenoxybenzoyl)-benzene is a high purity material free of ortho-isomer and catalyst contamination and can be used without further purification as one of the starting materials in the preparation of polyetherketones, which are important engineering resins.

Abstract: A fiber feedthrough assembly having a rigidizing member in the form of a quartz tube surrounding an axial length of a glass fiber defined between a shoulder formed by the jacket of the fiber and the axially inner end of a hermetic seal. The coefficients of thermal expansion of the tube and the fiber are substantially equal.
Abstract: Apparatus for simultaneously generating an intense toroidal magnetic field and an intense poloidal magnetic field in a compact aspect-ratio configuration and quasi-stationarily in time, characterized in that in the inner part of the electrical winding which generates the magnetic field (namely in that part of such winding which is nearest to the toroidal axis of symmetry) the turns of the conductor are tilted approximately 45 degrees relative to the meridian plane. Such said toroidal and respectively poloidal magnetic fields generate largely self-compensating mechanical loads on the winding, thus producing a highly optimized distribution of mechanical stresses in the apparatus, as a result also of favorable spring-like properties of the winding's turns, such properties originating in the turns being tilted. The said stress configuration in the apparatus is also compatible with the fitting of adequately sized cooling ducts between the winding's turns, whenever required.

Abstract: Deprotonation of polyamides employing alkoxide and/or alkali amide bases in solution in a liquid sulfoxide, the solutions being useful to make N-alkylated and N-acylated derivatives and to fabricate polyamide films, fibers, coatings, manufactured articles, and the like.
Abstract: A blend of 80-99 weight percent chlorinated polyethylene containing 15-60 weight percent chlorine with 20-1 weight percent of polyethylene containing up to 5 weight percent chlorine and 0.5-5 weight percent of a grafted unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride is disclosed. The preferred chlorinated polyethylene is made by chlorinating a blend of high and low density polyethylene.
Abstract: An in-well separator and recovery device for liquids which are heavier than water. A closed top container in the well circulates liquid through it, drawing liquid into its lower region and deflecting the liquid downward so that the heavier liquid settles to the bottom of the container from where it is pumped to the surface. Water is pumped from the top of the container directly back into the well. The pumps are controlled by sensing the water to pollution interface in the container and shutting down each pump before it pumps the inappropriate liquid.
Abstract: A modular fiber optic chemical sensor (FOCS) is formed using a capillary tube clad. A fiber optic core with reactive surface is exposed to a sample environment and then the capillary tube is fitted over the core. The capillary could also be porous so that in-situ measurements can be made. The capillary can be spaced from the core so that a flow channel for gas and liquid sensing is formed, or an index matching fluid may fill the channel. Measurements can be made in a compact portable modular detector unit in which the FOCS is placed between an excitation source and a detector or single ended where the excitation source and detector are at the same end of the core and a reflector is placed at the end of the core.

Abstract: A solvent-based thermosetting coating composition comprising hydroxy functional urethane modified polyester resin and amine-aldehyde crosslinking agent. The coating composition may be formulated as a hot sprayable, high solids coating composition suitable for use as chip resistant automotive vehicle primer suitable for use on motor vehicle body panel areas subject to chipping by stones, gravel and other road debris. Alternatively, the composition may be formulated as a high solids composition sprayable with conventional spraying equipment. The hydroxy functional urethane modified polyester resin is the product of polymerization of lactone monomers in the presence of hydroxy-containing urethane modified polyester precursor. The polymerization reaction mixture comprises between about 10 and about 80 weight percent the hydroxy-containing urethane modified polyester precursor and between about 90 and about 20 weight percent lactone monomers.

Abstract: A shielding enclosure for preventing propagation of electromagnetic radiation into or out of the enclosure comprising a support structure and a plurality of sheets of electrically conductive material supported thereon. Each of the sheets has an edge extending therearound and a region of overlap extending inwardly of and along the edge. The region is in overlapping engagement with the region of overlap of sheets adjacent thereto on the support structure so as to define a wave guide gap. Adjacent sheets are pressed together by pressure plates at the overlapping regions to maintain a gap width through which the electromagnetic radiation cannot propagate. Shielding components used to construct a shielding enclosure are also disclosed.

Abstract: An engine or heat pump for a refrigeration system employing a first elongated expansion-compression device defining a pair of chambers, each having a linearly movable piston therein which are axially interconnected by a hollow cylinder. A second expansion-compression device is mounted within the cylinder. Conduit means are provided, one extending into each end of the first device, through the associated piston and into the cylinder. The first device forces working fluid received through the device to provide fluid under relatively high pressure to the power and work loops of a refrigeration system, while the second device actuated by the first device draws relatively low pressure fluid from the system and returns it under pressure to a source.
Abstract: A system for propelling individual carriages along an endless path from a first speed abutted in a stack in a carriage collection section, to a second speed spaced apart in an operational section, and to a third speed in a stack-forming section where the carriages return to the first speed in the stack. Novel carriages are propelled by a linear motor wherein each carriage has attached a synchronous and a hysteresis secondary. A first primary positioned adjacent one part of the path develops electromagnetic waves for engaging the synchronous secondaries to provide controlled spacing of the carriages, and a second primary adjacent another part of the path develops other electromagnetic waves for engaging the hysteresis secondaries to provide controlled abutting of the carriages.
