  • Patent number: 4817870
Abstract: In a vehicle with a power source for moving said vehicle and for spreading liquid material on a road surface a material distributing apparatus is provided which includes a hydrostatic transmission and associated control mechanism for automatically maintaining a constant application rate of the material to the road surface in response to changes in the width of the application pattern. The hydrostatic transmission is responsive to the power source for providing a controlled rate of flow of the liquid material from the tank of the distributing apparatus, to a discharge element of the apparatus and onto the road surface so as to maintain a constant rate of application for the material despite changes in the speed of the vehicle. A pattern adjustment mechanism is provided for adjusting the pattern provided by the discharge element.

  • Patent number: 4818157
Abstract: A quick-change adapter for rotary devices such as power drills comprises a shaft that can be inserted in a chuck of the powered rotary tool. The shaft is coupled to and is coaxial with a tool holder that inlcudes means for retaining a tool and means for driving the tool. The retaining means typically involve one or more spring-loaded balls that engage a groove or detent in the tool. The driving means include a shape that is not circular, to engage a corresponding shape on the tool to apply torque, and a surface having a component that is substantially perpendicular to the axis of the adapter to enable the application of force in an axial direction. Tools such as drills, screw drivers, and the like are rendered usable with the adapter by receiving a shaft to fit the adapter and couple torque from the adapter, a groove or detent to fit the retaining means, and a shoulder or the like to apply axial thrust.

  • Patent number: 4819116
Abstract: A fault indicator light control circuit for a regulator controlled alternator/battery charging system has a first transistor connected with a light bulb in its conductive path to be turned "ON" when the transistor is conducting. Conduction of the transistor is controlled by a plurality of conductive paths connected to the base of the transistor and each path includes a Zener diode having a breakdown voltage substantially above the rated voltage of the battery. The conductive paths are connected to detect any one of a plurality of circuit operating defects, including a short in the silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) of a solid state regulator, an open SCR and a regulator failure. A capacitor is connected in the circuit to be charged by an alternator voltage having a polarity opposite that which is used to charge the battery. The capacitor voltage is used as a reference to bias the first transistor "OFF" when the system is operating normally.

  • Patent number: 4816050
Abstract: In order to prevent an uncontrolled collapse of a quartz tube whose inner surface is being coated with a vitrifiable substance in making a preform or parison of an optical fiber, one or more streams of carrier gas entraining the ingredients of the coating substance through the quartz tube are supplemented by a stream of supplemental carrier gas whose flow is being continuously controlled to keep the overall mass-flow rate substantially constant. The outer tube diameter is photoelectrically monitored and incipient changes thereof are compensated by controlling a flow of additional carrier or inert gas which does not pass through the tube but joins the traversing gas flow at the tube outlet, inside a solids separator with a restricted exit aperture, to modify the pressure differential across the tube wall.
