Abstract: This invention discloses a load and battery control device for controlling and distributing electrical energy in a vehicle electrical system comprising a generator, an electrical load, and a stored energy source. The device monitors and processes electrical signals generated by the vehicle electrical system and compares them to a vehicle operating state. The device operates on a switching system to controllably connect or disconnect the generator, electrical load, or stored energy source, or any combination thereof, with the vehicle electrical system to be consistent with a pre-determined vehicle operating configuration.
Abstract: A respirator hood is designed to fit over and around the head of a wearer and includes a substantially transparent lens received in a front opening of the hood. An inflatable neck cuff is positioned near a lower portion of the hood and substantially circumscribes an opening through which the wearer inserts his head, with the inflatable neck cuff being supplied by an air source and inflated so as to exert a sealing pressure against the neck of the wearer and to prevent the hood from rising up relative to the head of the wearer. The respirator hood also includes one or more overhead channels which define an air delivery path from the air source over the head of the wearer to the interior of the lens and downwardly across the face of the wearer.
Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions of matter that are useful as ionic liquids. The compositions of the invention are based on an N-substituted pyrrolidinone, said pyrrolidinone having a pendant ammonium cation that is separated from the pyrrolidone ring by a variable length alkyl spacer.

Abstract: An agricultural input supplier can provide seed products by tying the compensation received for the seed products to an evaluation of the land base on which the seed products are to be planted and/or the performance of the seed products on the land base. The evaluation of the land base may be based on environmental classification and/or genotype-by-environment data. In addition to tying the compensation to the land quality and the seed performance, this approach to providing seed allows for recommendations to be made to the producer regarding which seed products should be used on the land base. The performance of the seed product on the land base may also be verified.

Abstract: The invention concerns lipids functionalized with a terminal C?C double bond which can be transformed into an anchor group for binding to a substrate surface. The invention further concerns lipids comprising such an anchor group for binding to a substrate surface. The invention also concerns self-assembled monolayers of lipids on substrates, in particular on silicon oxide substrates. The lipids and the lipid monolayers or bilayers containing these lipids can be used to produce biomimetic supported membrane systems. These membrane systems can be directly anchored on silicon microelectronic devices. After the optional incorporation of functional molecules such as membrane-associated proteins such systems can used for applications such as model systems for examining biological membranes, screening methods, sensors and bioelectronic devices such as biocomputers.

Abstract: Use of an electrochemical mediator to transfer electrons from an electrode to molecules of a mammalian oxidative drug metabolizing enzyme (DME) in solution is described, in particular to carry out assays to determine metabolism of a candidate drug by the DME. Transfer of electrons by the mediator is carried out in the absence of a reductase enzyme for the DME molecules. The mediator is in solution with the DME molecules and/or immobilized to the electrode. Where the mediator is immobilized to the electrode, this may form a protective layer on the electrode thereby reducing or preventing denaturation of the DME molecules by direct contact with the electrode. Electrodes and electrochemical reaction chambers for use in the assays are also described.
Abstract: A temperature sensor is disclosed comprising a sensor element having a temperature-dependent resistance that is enclosed with a tube. In one embodiment, the tube is a quartz glass tube. In another embodiment the temperature sensor is a conventional halogen lamp, designed for use as a light source. The temperature sensor can be advantageously to precisely measure temperatures in a radiant heater, such as that present in a electric cooking appliance.
Abstract: An electro-optic display comprises a backplane; a layer of electro-optic material disposed adjacent the backplane; a protective layer; and a sealing layer of a metal or a ceramic extending between the backplane and the protective layer, and thus sealing the layer of electro-optic material from the outside environment.

Abstract: Device to effect micro-displacements of a support for digital images, in which the digital images are formed by a determinate matrix of pixels arranged in lines and columns perpendicular to each other. Each pixel has a determinate lateral size and between adjacent pixels a free space of determinate amplitude. The device has a fixed structure having an optical axis, support members keeping the support for digital images on a plane orthogonal to the optical axis, and actuator members arranged between the fixed structure and the support for digital images, to displace the support for digital images, along the plane and in the directions of the lines and columns, with respect to the optical axis. The actuator members are associated with electronic control elements and effect one or more unitary displacements, in the directions, each one equal to or less than the determinate amplitude of the free space between adjacent pixels.
Abstract: Permanent magnets or electromagnets or a combination of such magnets are provided to retain a prosthetic device on an extremity, such as an arm. The prosthesis utilizes the opposing forces, which are developed by virtue of like magnetic poles being in proximity to each other, to urge the prosthesis to remain attached to the extremity. The prosthesis is prevented from rotation by virtue of a centering force that is provided by an attachment magnet in the prosthesis being placed between two implanted magnets. A removable mounting ring is placed over the prosthesis straps to maintain them in proximity to the extremity.

Abstract: The invention concerns a clamp designed to grasp a load equipped with a stem. Locking is controlled by the presence and the position of the stem in the clamp, which avoids untimely release of the load in the event of failure of the actuating means of a mobile gripping element(s) of the clamp.

Abstract: Described are nucleic acid molecules encoding enzymes having fructosyl polymerase activity. These enzymes are sucrose dependent sucrose fructosyltransferases (SST) enzymes. Furthermore, vectors and host cells are described containing the nucleic acid molecules, in particular transformed plant cells and plants that can be regenerated from them and that express the described SSTs. Furthermore, methods for the production of short-chain fructosyl polymers using the described hosts and/or the SSTs produced by them are described.
