Abstract: A dispersion-managed optical soliton transmission system uses alternating spans of positive-dispersion optical fiber having a negative slope and negative-dispersion optical fiber having a positive slope. For wavelength division multiplexing, the system has a map strength preferably between 4 and 8. An absolute value of average group velocity dispersion between 0.5 and 0.0 ps2/km, and soliton power may vary between channels within 1 dB. Map periods, amplifier spacings, and dispersion values across a wavelength range of 1530–1600 nm are disclosed for bit rates of 10 and 40 Gbits/sec to maintain the ranges of average group velocity dispersion and soliton power.
Abstract: A process for protecting first electrodes, conductive leads and the underlying substrate from the process of removing organic layers during the fabrication of an organic electronic device. After first electrodes and conductive leads are formed over a substrate, a protective layer is selectively formed over the structure, with the protective layer not being disposed over selected portions of the first electrodes, the conductive leads and the substrate. Organic layers are then formed over the structure, and second electrodes are formed over the organic layers. Those portions of the organic layers disposed over the selected portions of the first electrodes, conductive leads and substrate are removed, and the protective layer protects adjacent portions of the first electrodes, conductive leads and substrate from the process of removing the portions of the organic layers.
Abstract: A digital parallelized Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) integrator filter comprising a first channel having a first input and second channel having a second input, a first adder to add the two channel inputs, an integrator to integrate the added channel inputs to provide a first channel output is described herein. The second input channel is adjacent in time to the first channel input. The second channel further comprises a second adder which adds the first output with the second channel input in order to produce a second output, adjacent in time with the first output. This configuration can be generalized to n inputs and m outputs.

Abstract: A system and a method for delivering targeted advertisements to the set-top box (STB). The targeted advertisements may be delivered to the STB in a low bandwidth channel or in a high bandwidth channel as an ad channel. The ad channel may be an analog channel wherein the advertisements are transmitted as analog video. Alternatively, the advertisement channel may be a digital channel, and the advertisements may be encoded and transported in the same way as conventional programming. In digital cases, a 6 MHz digital channel may carry several digital advertisement channels. Moreover, other services (e.g., data may be carried within the 6 MHz digital channel). Alternatively, the ad channel may share a 6 MHz bandwidth with one or more other programming channels.

Abstract: A method of analyzing a sample for detection of presence or absence of an organism of interest in the sample comprising (a) obtaining a sample; (b) subjecting the sample to a disruption treatment sufficient to fractionate any nucleic acid sequences present in the sample; and (c) detecting for presence or absence of an organism of interest in the sample. The detecting step (c) may comprise performing primer-directed amplification (preferably polymerase chain reaction) on the sample to produce an amplification result and analyzing the amplification result for an amplification product, wherein presence or absence of the amplification product is indicative of the presence or absence of the organism of interest in the sample.
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system related to field and crop information gathering. In one aspect of the invention, data is obtained from a producer. One example would be yield map data from a yield monitor. Another is “as planted” data from precision farming planting equipment. The data includes information about seed or crop in a producer's field and an identification of the field. The data is combined with other information in a report. The information added could be, for example, soil type information overlaid on the field map. Another example is environmental classification information overlaid on the field map. The report is returned to the producer and used to discuss planning related to the field and the seed or crop.

Abstract: A process of preparing a sample for analytical testing, comprising enriching and/or growing the sample in an enrichment/growth medium in a vessel; and disrupting the sample to release the intracellular contents of the sample, wherein the disruption is carried out in the same vessel as the enriching and/or growing. The sample is typically a biological sample, such as tissue, cells, microorganisms, or mixtures thereof.
Abstract: An evaporator cell, in particular for evaporating a high-melting material to be evaporated, comprises a crucible for receiving the material to be evaporated, and a heating device with a heating resistor for the resistance heating of the crucible, the heating resistor being provided as an electron emitter for the electron beam heating of the crucible. A process for the evaporation of a high-melting material to be evaporated is also described.

Abstract: A collector for an electron beam tube comprises a plurality of electrode stages. The electrode stages are spaced from one another by a non-conductive spacer. The non-conductive spacer is located between portions of electrodes and extends into the collector on a first side and out of the collector on a second side. The non-conductive spacer has an inner portion extending into the collector and an outer portion extending out of the collector and a waisted portion there between. The spacer is held at the waisted portion.
