Abstract: This invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid fragment encoding a squalene metabolic enzyme. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a portion of the squalene metabolic enzyme, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the squalene metabolic enzyme in a transformed host cell.
Abstract: Semiconductor apparatus comprising: a substrate having a substrate surface; a layer of a first material overlying a first region of the substrate surface; a layer of a semiconductor overlying the layer of first material and overlying a second region of the substrate surface; a first region of the layer of semiconductor, overlying the layer of first material and having a first conductivity; a second region of the layer of semiconductor, overlying the second region of the substrate surface and having a second conductivity; and the first conductivity being substantially different from the second conductivity. Such semiconductor apparatus further comprising a layer of a second material overlying the second region of the substrate surface, the second region of the layer of semiconductor overlying the layer of the second material.

Abstract: Interfaces for damping mechanical vibrations are used, for example, for damping vibrations in the automotive or aerospace industry. The interfaces have a base connection element (10), a load connection element (28) and a support element (14), with the support element (14) being connected to the base connection element (10) via a pretensioning device (12). A first energy converter system (16, 18) extends between engagement points (20, 22) on the base connection element (10) and engagement points (24, 26) on the load connection element (28). A second energy converter system (30, 32) extends between engagement points (34, 36) on the support element (14) and engagement points (38, 40) on the load connection element (28).

Abstract: A gas sensor of the type having a housing defining a chamber within which light is transmitted from a source to a detector through an optical path, includes internal mirror portions having part ellipsoidal shape. Light is transmitted from a source to a detector via the reflective portions. The detector is arranged to sense light only from a limited range of angles, such that only light transmitted through a defined optical path reflected off the two reflective portions from the source reaches the sensor. This ensures that there is a constant optical path from the source to the detector, which improves the signal to noise ratio of the device.
Abstract: A gray scale bistable electro-optic display is driven by storing a look-up table containing data representing the impulses necessary for transitions, storing data representing at least an initial state of each pixel of the display, storing data representing temporal and gray level prior states of each pixel, receiving an input signal representing a desired final state of at least one pixel of the display; and generating an output signal representing the impulse necessary for a transition, as determined from the look-up table, dependent upon the temporal and gray level prior states. Other similar methods for driving such displays are also disclosed.

Abstract: Compositions, methods, and systems for manufacturing articles, particularly containers and packaging materials, having a fiber-reinforced, starch-bound cellular matrix. Suitable mixtures used to form the articles are prepared by first preparing a viscous preblended mixture comprising water, a gelatinized starch-based binder, and fibers having an average length greater than about 2 mm. The highly viscous preblended mixture effectively transfers the shearing forces of the mixer to the fibers. The final moldable mixture is then prepared by mixing into the preblended mixture the remaining starch-based binder, water, and other desired admixtures, e.g., mold-releasing agents, inorganic filler rheology-modifying agents, plasticizers, coating materials, and dispersants, in the correct proportions to form an article which has the desired performance criteria.
